Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which film from 1985 centres on a couple of geeks who create the perfect woman using a computer and a Barbie doll?

Answer: Weird Science

"Weird Science" was written and directed by John Hughes and starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith and and Kelly LeBrock.

John Hughes is one of my favourite directors, bringing us such memorable classics as "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".
2. This 1976 Disney film starred Barbara Harris and a young Jodie Foster. Harris and Foster play a mother and daughter who, after an argument, spend a day walking in each other's shoes--literally! Which film is it?

Answer: Freaky Friday

"Freaky Friday" was a movie that I enjoyed very much as a child. In the movie Mrs. Andrews and her daughter, Annabel, wake up one morning to find that they have switched bodies! For the day, Mrs. Andrews must go back to school and Annabel shoulders her mother's grown-up responsibilities. In the end they both realize that they don't envy the other's life as much as they thought they did.

In 2003 "Freaky Friday" was remade starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
3. Skipping ahead to 2005, this next film was based on a Marvel comic book that debuted in 1961. Four astronauts acquire superpowers after a miscalculation leaves them exposed to cosmic radiation. Which movie is this?

Answer: Fantastic Four

The cloud of cosmic radiation that the group had been planning to study arrives at the space station ahead of schedule, and the scientists/astronauts are caught outside the station's shield. They each develop a unique superpower and assume the identities of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing. The incorrect answers are also movies which were based on comic books.
4. Going back to the '80s: Which 1987 film starred Kevin Costner as a US Navy liaison to the CIA who is appointed to lead a 'witch hunt' investigation wherein he himself is the target?

Answer: No Way Out

In the movie the Secretary of Defense (played by Gene Hackman) accidentally kills his mistress who, unbeknownst to Defense Secretary Brice, had taken Lt. Cmdr. Tom Farrell (Costner) as a lover. To cover up his crime, Brice blames the murder on a Russian sleeper agent (code-named "Yuri"), whose existence had never been definitively proven, and launches an investigation to discover his identity.
5. What an odd situation to be in! Here's another movie with an odd situation: The main character, played by Brad Pitt, is a man living his life backwards from old age to babyhood. Which movie is this?

Answer: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Benjamin first meets his love interest, Daisy (Cate Blanchett), when he is an old man (aged 12) and she is a young girl of six visiting her grandmother in the nursing home where Benjamin lives. As Benjamin becomes younger their paths cross several times and a romance develops. I won't spoil the ending for you, but this movie is really worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet!
6. How about something festive? In 2002 Happy Madison Productions released its first animated film. The film, which features the voice talent of Adam Sandler in several roles, tells the story of a disaffected young man trying to come to terms with the death of his parents and learn the meaning of Chanukah. What was its title?

Answer: Eight Crazy Nights

The title of the film comes from a comedic song written by Sandler which draws comparisons between the holiday gift-giving conventions of Christianity and Judaisim: "Chanukah is the festival of lights/Instead of one day of presents, we get eight crazy nights!" ("The Chanukah Song").
7. Backtracking to 1957, this next film is a musical starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire, in which Hepburn plays a shy store clerk who agrees to become a fashion model so that she can go to Paris and attend a lecture by a famous philosopher. What was this movie called?

Answer: Funny Face

Despite the enormous popularity of both Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, "Funny Face" is the only film on which they collaborated. The film features songs written by George and Ira Gershwin.
8. Which 2003 movie's characters were thrown together from various other works, including H. Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines", Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray"?

Answer: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" is another film that was adapted from a comic book. Literary legends of all kinds band together to form a league of superheroes who pursue the mysterious Fantom across late 19th-century Europe. The film was not received well by critics but, nonetheless, it performed admirably at the box office and is an interesting watch, especially if you're familiar with the works from which the characters are taken.
9. Which 1968 film is about a neurotic man named Felix who separates from his wife and moves in with a slob named Oscar?

Answer: The Odd Couple

The film starred Jack Lemmon as Felix Ungar and Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison and was based on a stage play of the same name written by Neil Simon.

Lemmon and Matthau are a fantastic comedy duo and have starred together in many feature films, including "The Fortune Cookie" (1966), "Grumpy Old Men" (1993), and "Out to Sea" (1997).
10. In 1971 the comedy troupe Monty Python released a film compilation of the most popular sketches from the show "Monty Python's Flying Circus". What is the sixth and final word in this film's title, taken from a catch phrase on the TV program?

Answer: Different

"And now for something completely different" was often used on the show to introduce a new sketch that had absolutely nothing to do with the one just previously viewed by the audience. The sketches included in "And Now for Something Completely Different" (the film) were among the best from the first two seasons of "Flying Circus", including "Nudge Nudge" (Eric Idle and Terry Jones), "Dead Parrot" (John Cleese and Michael Palin) and "The Lumberjack Song" (everyone).
