Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Berlin
Answer: Golden Bear
The Berlin International Film Festival is one of the major film festivals held around the world. Both the flag and coat of arms of Berlin feature a bear so it should be no surprise that the awards reflect this. The festival, which was first held in 1951, awards Golden and Silver Bears. A Golden Bear can be won for best film while the individual awards such as Best Director and Best Actress are Silver Bears.
Winners of the Golden Bear since 2010 include the Hungarian film "On Body and Soul" and the Romanian films "Child's Pose" and "Touch Me Not".
2. Cambridge
Answer: Golden Punt
This is Cambridge, the university city in England, renowned for amongst other things, punting on the River Cam. From there it is not a huge leap to naming the awards punts.
The award for best feature film is the Golden Punt. There are also silver and crystal punts awarded for documentaries and short films respectively.
Although the Festival has been running since the late 1970s, there appears no record of Golden Punts being awarded prior to 2013.
Recent winners prior to the Covid lockdowns of 2020 include "Chocolat" (2016), "The Forgotten Kingdom" (2014) and "Monica Z" (2013).
3. Cannes
Answer: Golden Palm
The Golden Palm, also known as Palme d'Or, was first awarded at the Cannes Festival in 1955 and it has been awarded annually since 1975. The choice of a palm reflects the city's coat of arms which shows a palm frond separating two fleurs-de-lis.
The 2019 winner was the South Korean film "Parasite", which also won the Oscar for "Best Film" at the 92nd awards. The Cannes film festival was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 lock down.
4. Locarno
Answer: Golden Leopard
The Golden Leopard is awarded at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Why the leopard was chosen I cannot tell, since the Locarno coat of arms features a lion.
Possibly the decision was taken to avoid using the same award name as Venice. Regardless the festival has awarded the Golden Leopard for the best film since 1968.
Winners of this award include the 2001 Italian film "Off to the Revolution by a 2CV", which is set in the aftermath of the 1974 Portuguese Carnation Revolution. I feel that this film should win an award purely for its name.
5. Plzen
Answer: Golden Kingfisher
Plzen, (or Pilsen) is a city in the Czech Republic, possibly best known for being where Pilsner beer was first brewed. The first Golden Kingfishers were awarded at the Plzen Film Festival in 1968, however after 1970 the festival was not held again until the 1990s.
The awards are for the Czech and Slovakian films, both feature and documentary. Recent winners of the best feature film award include "I, Olga Hepnarová", based on the true story of the titular character who murdered a number of people by driving a hired lorry into a queue at a Prague tram stop in 1973.
6. Reykjavík
Answer: Golden Puffin
The Reykjavík International Film Festival is probably not be the most famous of the many film festivals around the world. It was first held in 2005 and awards the Golden Puffin. Why a puffin, well over half of the world population of Atlantic Puffins can be found on Iceland. That is when they are on land at all and not out at sea.
The Golden Puffin is awarded to the film described as the "Discovery of the Year", which equates to the best film awards at other festivals. The first winner of the award was the Romanian film, "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" which chronicles an evening in life of Mr Lazarescu as he is taken by ambulance from hospital to hospital trying to obtain admittance.
There is also an award for the best short film, the Golden Egg, first awarded in 2008.
7. Stockholm
Answer: Bronze Horse
There is always one. Stockholm International Film Festival doesn't award a golden prize but a bronze horse. A heavy horse at that, as the prize weighs in at just over 16 pounds, almost twice the weight of an Oscar.
The main award is restricted, only if it is the director's first or second film is it eligible. Quentin Tarantino managed to win this with his first two films, "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction".
8. San Sebastian
Answer: Golden Shell
The San Sebastian festival has awarded a Golden Shell for best film since the 1950s. It also awards Silver Shells for best director, actor and actress.
Winners of the Golden Shell include the multi-national film "Wind with the Gone" in 1998. This has absolutely no connection to the more familiar "Gone with the Wind".
In the twenty-first century film winners include the Iranian-Iraqi film "Turtles Can Fly", which seems appropriate as a turtle should have a shell.
9. Venice
Answer: Golden Lion
The Venice International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals around the world. The award reflects that well known symbol of Venice, a winged lion. The Golden Lions are awarded for best film and Silver Lions for the best director.
Twenty-first century winners of a Golden Lion include the Swedish film, "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence" and the possibly better-known film "Brokeback Mountain".
In 2017 the Golden Lion was awarded to "The Shape of Water" which also won the Oscar for best film.
This was the first time in more than half a century that a film had received both awards.
10. Zagreb
Answer: Golden Pram
Although originally called a Golden Bib since 2005 the Zagreb Film Festival has awarded Golden Prams. These are awarded to films in four categories, three (best feature film, documentary film and short film), are open to all comers. The fourth award is to the best Croatian short film.
Although prior to the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns most of the winners were European films, this is not exclusively so. In 2009 the Canadian film "I Killed My Mother" received the Golden Pram for best feature film and in 2016 the Egyptian film "Clash" was the recipient.
