Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Farmer Hoggett acquire Babe?

Answer: He guesses the piglet's weight at the county fair.

Arthur Hoggett, mostly referred to as Farmer Hoggett, was played by James Cromwell, who received an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for the role. (He lost to Kevin Spacey, for 'The Usual Suspects'.) Babe, being the runt of the litter and a poor prospect as a porker, was donated by his original owner to be the prize at a guess-the-weight booth, and Farmer Hoggett correctly guessed it to be 16 lb., 2 oz.
2. The Hoggett farm already houses several unusual animals when Babe arrives, including a duck named Ferdinand. What is strikingly unusual about Ferdinand?

Answer: He is pretending to be a rooster to avoid being eaten.

Ferdinand is desperate to avoid what he perceives as the inevitable fate of the farmyard duck, especially a male - being served up for dinner. Since he wants the Hoggetts to think he is important as a rooster (crowing every morning!), he convinces Babe to help him destroy the family's new alarm clock, which he sees as potentially rendering him inessential.

They succeed, but only after creating chaos, and sending Ferdinand into hiding. At Christmas, when the Hoggetts decide not to kill and eat Babe, because he could be fattened up to win a prize at the next year's county fair, they have duck instead.

It is not Ferdinand, but a friend of his. The trauma leads to Ferdinand leaving the farm to find a safer place to live.
3. Shortly after Christmas, Farmer Hoggett sees Babe sorting the farm's hens by color, and decides that he should be trained. He takes him to the sheep field with Rex and Fly. What kind of dog is Fly?

Answer: Border Collie

Fly has been keeping an eye on Babe since his arrival, but now undertakes to help him learn to herd sheep. She advises him to be strong, and impose his will on the sheep. This works well for Border Collies, but not so well for pigs! The voice of Fly was supplied by Miriam Margolyes, whom many will recall as playing Professor Sprout in several of the 'Harry Potter' movies.
4. After Babe nips one of the sheep, she advises him to ask nicely and enlist the cooperation of the sheep, rather than harassing them. What is her name?

Answer: Maa

Following Fly's advice, Babe nips Maa to try and move her in the desired direction. She tells him off for such rude behavior, and instructs him to use kindness rather than force. When Babe follows her advice, and the sheep move docilely to their pen, both Farmer Hoggett and the other dogs are vastly impressed.
5. Unlike Fly, Rex is upset at having Babe intruding in his domain - he's the alpha dog, after all! He sees Babe's cooperative approach, and Fly's support of it, as being an insult to sheepdogs everywhere. What does he do to vent his anger?

Answer: Picks a fight with Fly

Rex tries to let Fly know that she has betrayed their species by letting Babe get inappropriate ideas about sheep handling, and injures her leg. Farmer Hoggett gets bitten as he tries to break up the fight, and Rex gets chained in the doghouse as a punishment. Now Babe is going to be one of the sheep dogs, or sheep pigs.

Rex was voiced by the Australian actor Hugo Weaving, whose role as Elrond in Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' series may be more familiar to many than this one.
6. When Babe witnesses feral dogs attacking the sheep, and runs out to defend them, he is too late to save them all. Since Babe is found standing there covered in blood, Farmer Hoggett believes he has killed them, and prepares to shoot him. After talking to the remaining sheep to find out what really happened, Fly distracts Farmer Hoggett until someone can tell him about the feral dogs in the neighborhood. Who arrives with this news?

Answer: His wife

Esme Hoggett comes running out of the house to warn about the reports she has received from the local police and the dogcatcher that there are feral dogs in the neighborhood killing livestock on several other farms. Farmer Hoggett realizes that he has jumped to an erroneous conclusion, and Babe is spared. He has, however, lost his friend Maa.

Esme was played by the Australian actress Magda Szubanski, who is better known for her television roles, especially in Australia. She first made a name for herself in sketch comedy, notably in 'Fast Forward' (1989-1992) where she created the characters of Pixie Anne Wheatley and Chenille the Beautician. In 1994 she produced and starred in 'Big Girl's Blouse', along with Gina Riley and Jane Turner. During this series they created the characters of Kath Day-Knight (Turner), her daughter Kim (Riley) and family friend Sharon Strzelecki (Szubanski), who later formed the basis for the series 'Kath and Kim', which originally aired in 2002.
7. As Farmer Hoggett prepares to take Babe to compete in a sheep field trial, Babe is devastated to learn that people eat pigs, and loses his faith in his family. How does he discover this information, which leads to him running away?

Answer: Duchess the cat tells him out of spite.

Duchess and Babe have never been close friends, and when he tries to talk to her she scratches him. This leads to her being exiled to spend the evening on the porch, while Babe rests in front of the fire. She sneaks back in and gains her revenge by telling him about the usual relationship between people and pigs.

When Babe asks Fly whether that is true, she confirms it. He is so distressed that he runs off, and is eventually found in, and retrieved from, a nearby graveyard. After much coaxing, Farmer Hoggett eventually convinces Babe that theirs is a special relationship, and that he has nothing to fear.
8. Arriving at the sheep trial, Babe is distressed to find that the sheep won't listen to him. Who consults the sheep back on the farm for the advice that will save the situation for Babe?

Answer: Rex

By now, Rex has realized that the farm is big enough for both of them. He runs home to consult the family sheep, who give him a special password that Babe can use to gain the cooperation of the sheep. As a condition for this, they make Rex promise to treat the sheep better in the future.

After Babe uses the secret message, "Baa-ram-ewe. Baa-ram-ewe. To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true. Sheep be true. Baa-ram-ewe", all goes swimmingly. The crowd stops laughing when Babe gains a perfect score.
9. What is the last line spoken before the film credits?

Answer: "That'll do, Pig. That'll do."

Farmer Hoggett says this to Babe after their triumph, as Rex and Fly share the joy and the crowd cheers. Babe has gone from zero to hero with one simple password! 'If I Had Words' is the song that Farmer Hoggett, accompanied by a group of field mice, sings wile trying to regain Babe's trust.
10. What kind of animal provides the song that closes the film (in the original theatrical release)?

Answer: Field mice

The field mouse chorus appears several times during the film, usually to provide a brief commentary between scenes. As the credits roll, they sing

"If I had words to make a day for you
I'd sing you the morning golden and new;
I would make this day last for all time
Give you a night deep in moonshine."

Not all DVD releases include the mouse soundtrack behind the closing credits.
