Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Bonasera... Bonasera... What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? Had you come to me in friendship, then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day."

Answer: Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)

In this opening scene in the movie, undertaker Amerigo Bonasera (Salvatore Corsitto) is telling the Godfather (Marlon Brando) how his daughter has been savagely beaten up when she tried to keep her honor. He had gone through the regular justice system, but the boys involved got off with suspended sentences.

He has now come to the Godfather for some real justice. After hearing his story, the Godfather asks, "Why did you go to the police? Why didn't you come to me first?" and then this quote. The cat held by Marlon Brando on his lap in the opening scene of "The Godfather" was a stray the actor found while on the lot at Paramount, and was not originally called for in the script.
2. "And I hope that their first child be a masculine child."

Answer: Luca Brasi (Lenny Montana)

This quote takes place at the wedding reception of Vito Corleone's daughter Connie (Talia Shire) to gangster Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). In this scene Corleone henchman Luca Brasi (Lenny Montana) is offering his best wishes to Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando).

Although Luca Brasi rehearses his speech (out loud, to himself) as "Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter. And may their first child be a masculine child," when he is ushered in to see Don Corleone he becomes tongue-tied and says it slightly differently.

The quote in this question is the version he says to the Godfather. The wedding is supposedly modeled on the real-life wedding of mobster Bill Bonanno (son of Brooklyn Mafia Don Joe Bonanno) in 1956 to Rosalie Profaci, niece of one of the heads of another of the five New York crime families (as described in the book "Bound By Honor: A Mafioso's Story" by Bill Bonanno, St. Martin's Press). Luca Brasi was a former professional wrestler who wrestled under the name "The Bull."
3. "And a man in my position can't afford to be made to look ridiculous."

Answer: Jack Woltz (John Marley)

In the events leading up to this quote, adopted Corleone son Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) has flown to Hollywood to deliver a request from Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to movie producer Jack Woltz (John Marley). He would like his friend, singer Johnny Fontane (Al Martino), to be given a role in an upcoming war movie being made by Woltz. Fontane is anxious to get this part because "it's a guy just like me. I uh -- I wouldn't even have to act -- just be myself." When Woltz hears the request to include Fontane in his upcoming movie, he says absolutely not.

He explains to Tom that Fontane had earlier seduced one of his proteges and then says this quote. There is some speculation this sequence was partially inspired by Frank Sinatra's role of Private Maggio in the war movie "From Here to Eternity" (for which Sinatra won the 1954 Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role).
4. "Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately."

Answer: Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall)

After Tom Hagen hears Woltz's refusal to include Johnny Fontane in his upcoming war movie and has dinner with him, he says "Thank you for the dinner and a very pleasant evening. If your car could take me to the airport..." and then this quote. Woltz later gets a severed horse head in his bed because of this decision (in filming this scene, a real horse head from a dog food factory was used). Johnny Fontane later sends the Godfather a huge flower arrangement in gratitude for getting the movie part. Two other popular singers with movie experience who were considered for the role of Johnny Fontane were Frankie Avalon and Vic Damone.
5. "It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes." (Hint: Although Tessio brings the package into the house, someone else says this quote.)

Answer: Pete Clemenza (Richard Castellano)

In the events leading up to this quote, the Godfather had given Luca Brasi an assignment to investigate rival mobster Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) with the instructions, "Go to the Tattaglias and ah, make them think that you're not too happy with our family and find out what you can." At Luca's meeting in Tattaglia's bar he is gruesomely killed (his arm is held, then his hand is pinned to the bar with an ice pick, then a third goon strangles him from behind). Later, a fish inside Luca's bulletproof vest is delivered to the Corleone compound, which Tessio brings inside.

When Sonny (James Caan) unwraps the package he says, "What the hell is this?" and Clemenza replies with this quote.
6. "Leave the gun. Take the cannolis."

Answer: Pete Clemenza (Richard Castellano)

After Sonny learns the Godfather's driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) had a hand in the assassination attempt on the Godfather, he orders Clemenza "Paulie sold out the old man ... I don't want to see him again." Clemenza gets his opportunity when they go driving, supposedly to buy a mattress.

In this scene Clemenza (Richard Castellano) has told driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) to stop their car so he could relieve himself at the side of the road. While the car is stopped, Rocco Lampone (Tom Rosqui), sitting in the back seat, executes Paulie with a gunshot to the back of the head.

As Clemenza and Rocco leave the car sitting there, Clemenza instructs Rocco to leave the gun but take the cannolis that he had purchased earlier for his wife.
7. "It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business."

Answer: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino)

In the events leading up to this scene, Michael (Al Pacino) had gone to visit his father in the hospital, but realizes all the bodyguards protecting the Godfather are gone. A nurse explains they had been sent away by the police. Police Captain McCluskey (Sterling Hayden) shows up, and when Michael asks him how much he is being paid by rival mob boss Virgil Sollozzo (Al Lettieri), he breaks Michael's jaw.

In this scene several members of the Corleone family are discussing how to react to the attempted assassination of Vito Corleone.

The group agrees Michael will kill both Captain McCluskey and Sollozzo in a meeting place to be decided by Sollozzo (which turns out to be an Italian restaurant in the Bronx). Michael says this quote when hotheaded Sonny implies this hit is personal.

In filming this scene, Al Pacino wore a dental appliance to hold his jaw out of alignment, to make it appear as though his jaw had been broken and not reset. (Note: Tom Hagen says a very-similar quote in this scene.)
8. "Hey, listen, I want somebody good - and I mean very good - to plant that gun."

Answer: Santino 'Sonny' Corleone (James Caan)

After the group decides Michael will kill both Captain McCluskey and mob boss Sollozzo, they wait to hear where a requested meeting will be held. When they do hear, Sonny asks, "Anybody know this joint?" Salvadore "Sally" Tessio (Abe Vigoda) says, "Yeah, sure, I do.

It's perfect for us. A small family place, good food. Everyone minds his business. It's perfect. Pete, they got an old-fashion' toilet -- you know, the box, and - and - and - ah the chain-thing. We might be able to tape the gun behind it." When they agree to do this, Sonny says this quote and Clemenza assures him "The gun'll be there." In filming the assassination scene, Al Pacino badly injured his leg while escaping from the restaurant after the hit.
9. "Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever."

Answer: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino)

After Michael decides to move his family to Nevada, he arranges a meeting with rival mob boss Moe Greene (Alex Rocco) in Las Vegas, where he asks Moe to sell the Corleones his share of his casino/hotel. Moe is incensed by this thinly-veiled "request" and says "You think you can come to my hotel and take over? and then "Sonofabitch -- Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!" He then storms out.

After Moe has left, Fredo (John Cazale) says, "Mike! You don't come to Las Vegas and talk to a man like Moe Greene like that!" and Michael replies with this quote.
10. "Can you get me off the hook, Tom? For old times' sake?"

Answer: "Sally" Tessio (Abe Vigoda)

At the end of the movie, "Sally" Tessio (Abe Vigoda) betrays Michael and tries to set up his assassination by rival mob boss Emilio Barzini (Richard Conte). When Michael and Tom realize this, Tom says, "I always thought it would've been Clemenza, not Tessio." Michael then decides Tessio will be executed, and adds "But I'm gonna wait -- after the baptism. I've decided to be Godfather to Connie's baby." When Tessio realizes his plot has been discovered and he is about to be executed, he makes this request of Tom.

When Tessio says this quote, Tom replies "Can't do it, Sally." Intercutting the baptism scene with the gang killings during the movie's climax helped earn "The Godfather" an Oscar nomination in the 1973 Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, but it did not win.

It did win three Oscars, including Best Picture. Marlon Brando won Best Actor in a Leading Role, but refused to accept the award. Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall were all nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but none of them won the Oscar.
