Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ryan Reynolds was trapped in a coffin with a cell phone and a few other items in what 2010 film?

Answer: Buried

In this movie, Reynolds, playing a war-time truck driver, woke up buried in a coffin deep underground. While he could communicate via a cell phone, he spent the entirety of the movie in the box, trying to drum up the five million dollar ransom before he ran out of time and suffocated in his tomb.

The movie, considered Hitchcockian in nature, received critical praise and earned $20,000,000 in the box office.
2. While Sandra Bullock wasn't the only one alone in space in this 2013 film (George Clooney was there for a bit), she had to rely on her own abilities to make it back to Earth. What was the movie?

Answer: Gravity

While Sandra Bullock began the film as part of a space crew repairing a satellite in orbit, the numbers whittled down to just her, fighting to survive a truly nightmarish trip into outer space with the limited resources at her disposal. The movie became a critical gem, getting nominated for ten Academy Awards (winning seven) and granting Bullock a second Best Actress nod (she won four years earlier for "The Blind Side". Director Alfonso Cuarón was also known for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and "Children of Men".
3. What 2010 biographical film put James Franco between a rock and a hard place as he struggled to free himself from a Utah canyon?

Answer: 127 Hours

While this wasn't a one-man movie (Franco encountered hikers before the fateful event happened), it did primarily feature Franco as Aron Ralston, a man who, while hiking through a Utah Canyon, ended up pinning his arm between an unmovable boulder and a canyon wall. Over the next 127 hours, he managed to amputate his arm to avoid dying alone. Both Franco and the film were nominated for Oscars. Director Danny Boyle previously won for "Slumdog Millionaire" two years earlier.
4. Matt Damon ended up stranded on another planet in what 2015 Ridley Scott film?

Answer: The Martian

Based on a novel by Andy Weir, "The Martian" featured a man who, lost during a Martian storm, ended up getting stranded, alone, on Mars. The film chronicled his attempts to stay alive in this foreboding landscape with only the supplies he had on-hand.

He survived 560 Sols (rotations of the planet) before rescue. "The Martian" ended up being a major success, leading to Oscar nominations for Damon and Scott, and a Best Picture nod for the film itself. It earned over $600,000,000 in the box office.
5. What 2012 Ang Lee film saw its protagonist alone on a boat in the Pacific...with a tiger?

Answer: Life of Pi

In this film, Pi Patel, at the age of 16, ended up surviving a shipwreck only to end up on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific with a tiger named Richard Parker. The film explored their relationship as they tried to survive for months with next to nothing to sustain them, eventually finding their way to Mexico on the ocean currents.

The film (like the original Yann Martel novel) was a major success, leading director Ang Lee to a Best Director Oscar win. The movie was, otherwise, nominated for eleven Oscars altogether.
6. Will Smith thought he was alone in which 2007 post-apocalyptic film, until he found two other survivors?

Answer: I Am Legend

Directed by "Hunger Games" series director Francis Lawrence, "I Am Legend" was based on the Richard Matheson novel of the same name in which a disease has wiped out most of humanity, replacing it with a species of ravenous creatures. In the movie, Will Smith played (who he assumes is) the only survivor of the outbreak who went along day-by-day trying to figure out a cure for the disease using his immunity.

It went on to be a big hit for Smith despite a critically less-than-well-received ending.
7. After a plane crash, Tom Hanks ended up stranded on a deserted island for more than four years in what 2000 movie?

Answer: Cast Away

Made by Robert Zemeckis, who led Hanks to a Best Actor win for "Forrest Gump", "Cast Away" was filmed over several years, during which Hanks played a FedEx employee who, during a shipment over the ocean, ended up in a crash that left him stranded, solo, on an island. What followed was a four year stint in isolation, during which he managed to find food and live day-by-day.

He eventually crafted a raft and made his way back to the mainland. Hanks was later nominated for Best Actor for his role; it was his fifth nomination.
8. Sigourney Weaver ended up alone (well...with Jonesy) with a creature from outer space in what 1979 movie?

Answer: Alien

In this Ridley Scott horror classic, an encounter with an alien egg on a far away planet led to chaos on the ship Nostromo as crew members were killed one by one by a creature with acidic blood. Inevitably, it was Sigourney Weaver's Ripley who, along with the cat Jonesy, was able to shoot the alien out into space, saving herself.

As the sole survivor in this film, Weaver also appeared in "Aliens", "Alien 3", and "Alien: Resurrection". She was nominated for Best Actress for "Aliens".
9. James Caan was trapped in a house with his biggest fan in what 1990 horror film also starring Kathy Bates?

Answer: Misery

Based on a Stephen King novel, "Misery" starred James Caan as Paul Sheldon, a novelist who wrapped up his long-running series of schlocky romance novels featuring the life of Misery Chastain. After a car accident in the Colorado Rockies, he was taken in by a nurse named Annie Wilkes who claimed to be his biggest fan who, in return for her kindness, forced him to stay in her house and write one more book for her. Bates won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the movie.

It was directed by Rob Reiner who, two years later, would get an Oscar nomination for "A Few Good Men".
10. Rachel McAdams found herself seated next to a psychopath on an airplane in what 2005 Wes Craven film?

Answer: Red Eye

In this psychological thriller, McAdams found herself in a position to stop the man next to her, a domestic terrorist, from killing a government official upon landing in Miami, but only if she could escape his clutches from the seat next to her on her red eye flight.

The film also starred Cillian Murphy as the terrorist, aptly named Jackson Rippner. The film was one of director Wes Craven's later films before his death in 2015. He was also known for "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "The Hills Have Eyes", and "Scream".
