Isn't It Pun-derful? Trivia Quiz

Most puns relate to films from the years 2015 and 2016, with a few early movies thrown in. For many questions, you don't have to have seen the movie - seeing the trailer might be sufficient.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2015, the film "The Revenant" featured Leonardo DiCaprio in a harrowing scene with a ferocious animal. What might the director have said after the scene was complete?

Answer: "It was a Kodiak moment."

The scene of the bear mauling DiCaprio's character was created with computers and stuntmen in costume. No actual bears was used in the grizzly moment.
2. In 2016, the film "Jurassic World" hit the big screen, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. It was such a big smash hit that the director might have PUNNED what? (Note: Dino word needed!)

Answer: "It was a Tyrannosaurus Rex!"

Actually, the hybrid dinosaur in the film was an "Indominus Rex," a cousin of T-Rex. These kinds of wrecks are hard to insure against, as they are considered experimental.
3. The 2011 movie "Rio" featured the character "Blu" who was a rare blue macaw. If the animators had been asked about drawing the other species of birds in the movie who helped Blu in the carnival scene, what might they have said? (Hint: bird word needed.)

Answer: "Toucan draw at this game."

The only pun with a bird word is "Toucan." Blu's new friend Rafael, voiced by George Lopez, was a toucan, and did indeed help save Blu (voiced by Jessie Eisenberg)from his captors at the carnival. Sadly, the movie "Rio" was based on the true story of the Spix Macaw blue parrot who was the last of his kind. He died in 2014 with no offspring.
4. Tom Hanks played Chesley Sullenberger in the 2016 film "Sully." If director Clint Eastwood had been asked if it had been difficult finding the perfect actor to portray Sully, he might have given what pun?

Answer: "Hanks had no trouble landing the job."

Sullenberger landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River after the plane struck a flock of geese after takeoff. Hanks landing the job was the match. There was no link to taxis, mustard or mystery to justify the other choices.
5. "The Big Short" came out in 2015, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. The director Adam McKay might have suggested actors read "The Mystery of Banking" by Murray Rothbard to prep for the roles. What might the actors have PUNNED to this suggestion?

Answer: "I tried but I lost interest."

The film was based on the 2008 housing market and banking scandals. The need for interest was not imaginary. The film "The Big Short" won an Academy Award that year for best adapted screenplay.
6. In the 2016 film "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," Reacher is played by Tom Cruise who defends his army buddy against accusations. What might Reacher have punned about the character Susan Turner? (Sorry, but you have to know the accusation to get this one easily!)

Answer: "She had no treason to do this!"

Susan Turner, played by Cobie Smulders, was accused of treason. The character Jack Reacher, in the book by Lee Child, travels around the United States (usually by foot), solving problems and investigating interesting mysteries. This film is the second of Child's books to be made into a movie.

The first was adapted from "One Shot" into the 2012 film simply titled "Jack Reacher." No pun here - I love the Reacher books, and was thrilled to see them hit the big screen.
7. In 2016, the Enterprise journey continued with "Star Trek Beyond". James T. Kirk was played by Chris Pine and our favorite Vulcan by Zachary Quinto. Why do you think the "Star Trek" James T. Kirk films are still so successful?

Answer: "Good Genes."

Counselor Troi was not in the James T. Kirk crew, and the "You will be assimilated" line from the Borg was from the Picard movies. The "Force" was felt in "Star WARS", not "Star TREK". So although the Troi pun was funny, (yeah, I know, the others weren't) I have to go with good Genes. Gene Roddenberry created the original "Star Trek" television series, which included the James T. Kirk character, which led to the Trekie films.
8. For this question, the puns below were perpetrated by characters in the movie. The 2016 film "Alice Through the Looking Glass" has a character called Time. The Cheshire Cat character says what when he appears sitting on Time's shoulders? (Note the location of the cat!)

Answer: "Actually, I'm right on time."

All of these are quotes from the 2016 movie, starring Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska. The Hatter uttered the "wounds," "life" and "wait" quotes. Only one choice was from the Cheshire Cat, who sat on Time and said he was on Time. Now, if you want to see some serious puns, read the Lewis Carroll book and see chapters 9 and 10!
9. The 1999 film, "The Sixth Sense," starred Bruce Willis as Dr. Malcolm Crowe. Crowe had an eight-year old patient, Cole Sear, who said "I see dead people." Which sentence would NOT describe the boy's character?

Answer: He was a Poltergeist.

"The Sixth Sense", also starring Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette, focused on a young (small) boy who was a medium, in that he spoke with dead people. So he was a small medium. And sorry for the spoiler, but he saw Dr. Crowe who was dead. The boy's character was both a Sear and a Seer, as his character name was Sear and he saw what others did not.

A poltergeist is a ghost who is responsible for physical disturbances, and the young Sear was not a ghost.
10. Spinning off of the original 2002 "Spider-Man" film, in 2014 we saw "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". Which would NOT be a pun about the lead character, played by Andrew Garfield?

Answer: He slept in the Krypt-o-night.

Spin-off? Web design? Marvel(Comics)? Hanging around? They all suit our friend Peter Parker, whose alter-ego suits up as Spider-Man. But Kryptonite links to Superman, and Peter swings by that substance with no problem.
