Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1954 movie, originally shot in 3D, revolves around an ex-tennis pro living in London who finds out his wife Margot is having an affair, and his plot to murder her?

Answer: Dial M for Murder

This movie is an example of a classic Hitchcock theme. Margo, played by Grace Kelly, is trapped in a loveless marriage to Tony, played by Ray Milland, hence she ends up having an affair with an American crime fiction writer. The affair is discovered by her husband, and he plans a perfect murder which would not incriminate him. Unfortunately, the best laid plans don't always turn out right and things don't go as planned. His wife doesn't get killed, but is sentenced to death for the murder of the man who was supposed to kill her, the man she killed in order to defend herself.

2. Which film started off in London where Graham, a middle aged writer suffering from writer's block, acquires an orphaned young otter called Mij (pronounced Midge)?

Answer: Ring of Bright Water

"Ring of Bright Water", a 1969 movie, was a true story from a book of the same title, written by Gavin Maxwell. Graham, played by Bill Travers, passes a pet shop in London, where he spots a river otter in the window. He adopts the otter and takes it home where it wreaks havoc in his tiny apartment. The movie really takes flight when Graham leaves his tedious job and big city life in London, and relocates to the stunning beauty of coastal Scotland. Mij blossoms in a natural environment, and the bond between Mij and Graham grows very strong. The shots of the otter frolicking in nature are easily the best of the whole film, and the cinematography of the Scottish highlands and shimmering seascapes is magnificent.

3. The filming of one of E. M. Forster's books portrays the tale of Miss Lucy Honeychurch during a vacation to Italy and her return home. In which movie does Lucy become engaged to Cecil Vyse who lives in a "well appointed home" in London?

Answer: A Room With a View

The movie tells the romantic story of a young Edwardian miss confused by social expectations and her own feelings. The London house, located at 18 Stafford Terrace and known as the Linley Sambourne House, was turned into a museum in 1980 to commemorate Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne. Most of the house furnishings and decorations have been preserved since his death in 1910.

4. An Ealing Studios comedy of 1949 is about a region of London declaring itself independent upon discovering an ancient treaty. For which part of Britain's capital would citizens now need a passport?

Answer: Pimlico

The plot of "Passport to Pimlico" revolves around the setting off of a previously unexploded bomb which uncovers a cellar filled with coins, jewellery and a parchment showing that Pimlico had been ceded to the Duke of Burgundy. Since the treaty had not been rescinded, Pimlico was officially part of Burgundy and not England. The situation descends into chaos, with residents being refused re-entry without their passports. Eventually the matter is resolved by means of a typical British compromise. The film starred Stanley Holloway, who also appeared in "My Fair Lady" (1964) in which he played Eliza Dolittle's father and sang "Get Me to the Church on Time".

While he is living in the hospital we find out the true nature of the man, which is kind and gentle, winning him the affection of many friends.

The movie was a commercial success even though it was turned down by a number of studios before it was finally produced by Paramount Pictures. The film was nominated for eight academy awards, although it didn't win any.
