Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Mona Lisa" was directed by what Irish filmmaker, who also directed "The Crying Game" and "Interview with the Vampire"?

Answer: Neil Jordan

As well as being a film director, Jordan is also a screenwriter, novelist, and short-story writer. He has won many awards for his films, including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "The Crying Game". He also created "The Borgias", a TV series set in Renaissance Italy, which ran for three seasons from 2011 to 2013.

His work has often dealt with unconventional sexual relationships and he often presents characters who seem deviant in a sympathetic light. "Mona Lisa", for example, reveals the sordid side of the sex industry from the point of view of characters enmeshed within it.
2. The plot of "Mona Lisa" concerns an ex-convict named George who seeks a job from his old boss, Denny Mortwell. Which distinguished British actor, famed for starring in "Alfie" (1966) and who played Alfred in the "Dark Knight" trilogy, played the role of Mortwell?

Answer: Michael Caine

Michael Caine has had a career spanning over 60 years and has appeared in over 130 films. He has been nominated for six academy awards, winning twice for Best Supporting Actor, and has garnered numerous other accolades. Other notable roles include appearances in "Educating Rita", "Hannah and Her Sisters", and The Cider House Rules". Film critic Roger Ebert described the role of Mortwell as one of Caine's "most evil villains" and stated that "he plays the character without apology and without exaggeration, as a businessman," which is what made the character so "creepy".
3. George, the film's male lead, is a working-class gangster who reveals early in the film that he has just spent seven years in jail, although the nature of his crime is not specified. He is played by what actor, who has also starred in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: Bob Hoskins

Bob Hoskins was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, as well as winning several other awards for the role of George. The character George is portrayed as uncouth and bad-tempered, yet also willing to go out of his way to help ladies in distress.

At the beginning of the film, he goes to his ex-wife's house to see his teenage daughter, who initially does not recognise him, and the ex-wife throws him out. Later in the film, he and his daughter meet in secret a few times as she is happy to see him.
4. Simone, the film's female lead, a high-class call girl with a disturbing past, is played by which actress, who starred as a Haitian psychiatrist in the supernatural thriller "The Serpent and the Rainbow"?

Answer: Cathy Tyson

Cathy Tyson was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Simone. She has also starred in "Priest" (1994) as a housekeeper who is having an affair with a Catholic priest, and in the ITV drama series "Band of Gold" (1995-97) in which she plays a prostitute.

In "Mona Lisa", Simone asks for George's help in tracking down an old friend named Cathy she used to know in her former days of walking the streets.
5. "Mona Lisa" was produced by HandMade Films, a British film production and distribution company; the company's founders and the Executive Producers of the film were Denis O'Brien and what former member of the Beatles?

Answer: George Harrison

Denis O'Brien is an American attorney and former business manager of George Harrison. They founded the company in 1978 to finance the Monty Python film "Life of Brian" as Harrison was a fan and friend of the Monty Python team. They also produced "Time Bandits", which was written by Monty Python's Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, and was one of HandMade Films' most successful efforts. HandMade Films ceased operating in 1991 because of financial problems and was sold three years later to Paragon Entertainment, which resumed production under the original name.
6. George and Simone get off to a bad start in their working relationship. On his second day as her driver, he demands she get out of the car in the middle of a busy street after a heated argument about what?

Answer: His clothes

The previous day, Simone told George that he needs new clothes if he is going to be her driver and hands him a wad of banknotes to buy some. The next day when she meets him in the lobby of the Ritz, a very high-class London hotel, he is dressed in cheap, casual clothes that are clearly out-of-place in such a distinguished establishment.

She complains that by looking so cheap when he meets her, he is virtually advertising the nature of her profession. He gets angry and complains that he doesn't even want to work with her.

After leaving her stranded in traffic briefly, he drives around the block and apologises for his behaviour, admitting that his choice of clothes was "ridiculous". The next day, Simone takes him to an expensive menswear store and picks out a suit and tie for him.
7. George searches for Simone's friend Cathy by going to adult clubs in London's red-light district, without success. He eventually locates her waiting in what unlikely venue?

Answer: A church

He finds her smoking a cigarette, which he frowns upon considering they are in a church. He is only able to speak to her briefly before she leaves with an associated of Mortwell's named Anderson who is pimping her out as a prostitute. Simone tells him that Anderson used to be her pimp as well when she was a streetwalker rather than a high-end call girl and explains that meeting her pimp in a church is a way to be inconspicuous.

He follows Anderson, who later cuts George on the arm with a knife in a dramatic scene in Simone's apartment building.
8. George later rescues Cathy from a client of Mortwell who is drugging and abusing her. He takes her to a hotel in Brighton, where Simone meets them. While walking along the boardwalk with Simone, they are chased by Mortwell's henchman Anderson and another man. How does George stop them?

Answer: He tips over a seafood cart, tripping them over.

George then proceeds to beat them both up while they are still on the ground. This chase scene occurred after a melodramatic incident in which George had become angry with Simone when he realised that she and Cathy were lovers and that she did not return the romantic feelings he had begun to develop for her.
9. When George and Simone return to their hotel room, they are confronted by Mortwell who calls George a fool and makes clear that he plans to use Simone the way he has been using Cathy. What happens next?

Answer: Simone shoots Mortwell

When George and Simone first arrived at the hotel, he gives her a gun he obtained from his friend Tommy so that she can protect herself. After Mortwell confronts them, he begins hitting Simone, who first shoots him in the foot and then in the chest. A moment later, Anderson shows up and she shoots him too.

She points the gun at George but does not pull the trigger and he disarms her angrily, yelling, "You would have done it, wouldn't you!" He is next shown walking arm in arm with his daughter and his friend Tommy.
10. The movie begins and ends with the song "Mona Lisa" playing, which is performed by what artist?

Answer: Nat King Cole

The song is about the famous painting of the same name and was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston. As well as being played in full at the beginning and end of the film, the song is briefly played when George turns on the radio while chauffeuring Simone. (Additionally, George's friend Tommy has a copy of the Mona Lisa hanging in his workshop.) The song was originally written for the 1950 film "Captain Carey, U.S.A." and won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1950.

It was a number one hit for Nat King Cole, who described it as one of his favourite recordings.
