Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was expecting a documentary on the marine life of strange aquatic animals but, to my surprise, I was watching a John Cleese film from 1988, centered around a diamond heist. What was the film called?

Answer: A Fish Called Wanda

The film "A Fish Called Wanda" was a huge 1988 success. It also starred Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. It garnered many awards and critical acclaim leading to a less successful sequel "Fierce Creatures".
2. Well, this movie wasn't a religious biography as I expected. It starred Bette Davis as an aging celebrity, and a conniving young woman looking to supplant the older star. It was an American Film Institute top movie, settling in at #16. What was this box office smash in 1950?

Answer: All About Eve

This film from 1950 was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning six of them. Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, and George Sanders led the impressive cast while a then unknown by the name of Marilyn Monroe also appeared in an important but small role. This movie had many stars vying for roles as it was pegged for success early in its production. Incidently "Three Faces of Eve" premiered in 1957.
3. Thought I'd check out a hunting movie next. I settled in for this 1962 classic starring Gregory Peck. I was instead, entertained by a courtroom drama dealing with racism and alleged rape in the impoverished south. What was this hit movie?

Answer: To Kill a Mockingbird

"To Kill a Mockingbird" was a one hit wonder by author Harper Lee. Gregory Peck played lawyer Atticus Finch, defending a black man accused of rape. His children learn of bigotry and evil in their hometown during the trial, while they also spy on neighbour 'Boo Radley' whom they have condemned based on hearsay.
4. Thinking I could indulge in a bit of high society and culture, I sat down to watch this movie about orchestra music and arias. It turned out I was watching a 1935 Marx Brothers production about singing and Italian performers who were lovestruck. Which particular Marx Brothers movie was it?

Answer: A Night at the Opera

'A Night at the Opera' was a classic Marx Brothers romp about an agent trying to sign a big name singer. In classic mix up fashion the wrong singer is signed and they all end up in New York on stage before everything literally 'falls' into place. Some real opera performances are in the film including ones from 'Il Travatore'.
5. I thought a nice farming movie might be in order...something with baby ovine. Boy, was I shocked when I watched this one. A 1991 thriller which kept Jodie Foster on edge. It gave new meaning to 'self-serve buffet'. What was this eerie movie?

Answer: Silence of the Lambs

Anthony Hopkins was Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist with a penchant for eating people. Foster was an FBI agent in training tracking a serial killer, using Lecter to help in the investigation. 'Babe' was a movie about a pig, 'Animal Farm', an Orwell novel, and 'Soul Harvest', a book in the 'Left Behind' series.
6. I thought I was watching a biography of the man who invented dynamite. The after effects of Alfred Nobel's TNT would be fitting for this title. Instead I was watching a pre-teen movie about teenage superheroes going to school and a love triangle that ensues. Which movie starred Kurt Russell in 2005?

Answer: Sky High

This movie, about a high school for superheroes that floats in the clouds, was a fun movie to watch. Some comedy, special effects and although it had a juvenile storyline, it was worth the watch. Also, Lynda Carter appeared in a small role as the school principal, looking as spectacular as ever.
7. I enjoy Reggae music and when I saw a biography of one of the best performers in the genre I was first in line. Little did I know what I was in store for. It was a 2008 movie about a columnist and his wife and how they coped with life and their new dog. It also had an ending that had people drowning in the aisles. What was the name of this family movie?

Answer: Marley and Me

The autobiographical movie, based on the book of the same name, starred Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as the Grogans. They relocated to Florida and worked as reporters. John Grogan began writing a column about the trying times raising the yellow Labrador Retriever, Marley, in their family. The movie covered the entire 13 years of the dog's life, 'til the heartbreaking end.
8. Well I like trucking movies...Chuck Norris, Burt Reynolds etc. Well this one turned out to be a nerve shattering thriller about the secrets of death and what was on the other side of death's door. It was a 1990 movie with Julia Roberts. What was the name of this chilling film?

Answer: Flatliners

One of my favourite spine-tingling movies where Keifer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, William Baldwin and Julia Roberts stopped their hearts to see the other side of death, before being brought back to life to report on their findings. It was extremely disturbing and frightening at certain times. Good movie!
9. I'm a history buff so thought I'd take in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", thinking it a retelling of the Capt.John Smith and Pocahontas story. Well I was entertained to an action thriller about two high priced assassins who, although married, did not know what the other did for a living until their jobs crossed paths. Who played the married couple?

Answer: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

This 2005 movie had Pitt and Jolie as assassins working for different firms. When assigned to the same 'hit', they botched the job and accused each other for the failure. Their employers then put a hit on each of them. In the ensuing battle for survival, they patched up their marriage and argument. This was a highly sucessful movie during its theatrical run.
10. First thing I thought of was that I was watching a superhero movie. They're great. But I got a shock when I found myself watching a period movie about old France, involving intrigue, betrayal and adventure. The movie was from 1998 with Leonardo DiCaprio. What was it?

Answer: The Man in the Iron Mask

"The Man in the Iron Mask" was the unofficial sequel to the 1993 "The Three Musketeers". It had a solid cast with Jeremy Irons, Hugh Laurie and John Malkovich. The movie had the king of France, Louis XIII locking one of his identical twin sons in an iron mask and hiding him in the Bastille, among other places, to prevent a dynastic controversy.

The aging Musketeers rescued him and put twin Phillipe on the throne in place of Louis XIV.
