Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which movie directed by Costa-Gavras does the pacifist opposition leader (role by Yves Montand) die from a head trauma?

Answer: Z

Konstantinos Gavras was born in Greece in 1933. He chose the alias Costa-Gavras and emigrated to France, where he started a movie directing career.
In 1969 his first success was "Z", named after the main character. The opposition party holds a peace rally, but during this meeting someone runs into the leader of the opposition. Z is seriously injured in the head and later succumbs to his wounds.
As explained in the movie, the letter zeta (Z) in ancient Greek was used as a symbol for "he is alive" - or at least his ideas still are.
2. Fritz Lang directed a movie with the subtitle "Eine Stadt sucht eine Mörder". Which 1931 movie starring Peter Lorre as a child murderer has this subtitle?

Answer: M

Fritz Lang (1890-1976) was an Austrian - German movie director, writer and producer. He started his career in 1919 and came to fame with two movies about Doctor Mabuse ("Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler" in 1922, as well as "Das Testament des Drs. Mabuse" in 1933) and especially "Metropolis" (1927), a dystopian science-fiction movie.
"M" is set in a German city, where someone kidnaps and kills several young girls. After a long investigation, the presumed killer Hans Beckert (role by Peter Lorre) is arrested and judged - not by the police but by an organization of criminals.
3. Desmond Llewelyn will always be remembered for a recurring role in the James Bond franchise. Which role did Desmond perform?

Answer: Q

Llewelyn was born in Wales in 1914. He started his acting career in 1939 as Captain Sandeman in the TV movie "Campbell of Kilmhor". His first main role was in the TV Movie "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1950), where he portrayed Mr. Hyde. In 1963, Desmond Llewelyn created the character of Q, the quartermaster who provided James Bond with highly sophisticated instruments that would prove to come in handy. Desmond thus appeared in "From Russia With Love" (1963), "Goldfinger" (1964) and so on - up till "The World Is Not Enough" (1999), seventeen movies in all. Three weeks after the premiere of "The World Is Not Enough" Desmond Llewelyn died as the consequence of a car crash.
4. His real first name is Laurence, but he uses the title Mr. in his alias. What is the second part of the screen name for the actor who starred as B.A. Baracus in the TV series "The A-Team" (1983-1987) and as Clubber Lang in "Rocky 3" (1982)?

Answer: T

Laurence Tureaud was born in 1952 in Chicago. His first main role was as Stallone's opponent Clubber Lang in "Rocky III". He also starred in the TV series "The A-Team" and in the TV series "WWF Championship Wrestling" (1985-1986) and "WWF Superstars Wrestling" (1987).
With his very recognisable hairstyle and golden chains, he was of course included in one of the episodes of the TV series "The Simpsons". In this episode, he voiced his own character.
Mr. T has also done voice work for the movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (2009) and the TV movie "Alice Through the Looking-Glass" (1987).
5. In a 2005 movie, Evey (Natalie Portman) helps a masked man to bring down a fascist government in a future Great Britain. What is the name of the man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, whose name also appears in the movie title?

Answer: V

The movie to which I refer is "V for Vendetta". In some near future, a fascist organization has taken over Great Britain and installed a tyranny. Only one man, wearing a mask resembling Guy Fawkes, seems to oppose the Ministry. But then this mysterious person (played by Hugo Weaving) gets in touch with Evey and gradually persuades her to help him overthrow the government.
6. Patrick Stewart is known not only for impersonating Captain Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", but also as mutant professor. In the latter role, which single letter completes his nickname "Professor"?

Answer: X

Patrick Stewart (born 1940) was the first actor to perform the role of Professor Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, in the movie series based upon Marvel Comics "The X-Men". The movies revolve around two factions of mutants with super powers: the pacifist school led by Professor X and the group trying to grab world power, led by Magneto (role by Ian McKellen).

Stewart played Professor X in at least six movies in the "X-Men" franchise, besides a number of video games.
7. Tobias Lindholm directed in 2010 a prison drama, revolving around two criminals whose first name starts with the same letter. Which letter is the title of this prison drama, that has received an R rating in countries such as Germany, Argentina and Australia?

Answer: R

The main characters are the Danish Rune (role by Pilou Asbaek) and the Arab Rashid (played by Dulfi Al-Jabouri). In spite of the social segregation in the prison between native criminals and people from abroad (and/or of different religion), Rune and Rashid become best friends.
8. The 2001 movie we're looking for in this question, is roughly based on one of Shakespeare's dramas. But the setting is different: it tells the story of a USA college basketball team with one single player of Afro-American descent (Odin James, played by Mekhi Phifer) in a mainly white team. What is the title of this movie?

Answer: O

One single protagonist of African descent in an environment filled with Caucasians? This has to be inspired by the Shakespeare tragedy "Othello".
The coach of the team grants Odin the best player award and denies his own son Hugo this honour. So Hugo plots revenge, in which Odin's girlfriend is killed and Odin's best friend is blamed for the murder.

To underline the similarity with Shakespeare's play, the movie does not only use character names similar to Shakespeare's characters (Hugo for Iago, Desi for Desdemona...) but also ends with the "Ave Maria" from Verdi's opera "Othello".
9. In this thriller/horror movie from 2010, a school teacher on probation witnesses disturbing movements after hours. Contrary to what the police believe, there is some serious violence going on in the school. What is the one letter title to this movie (also the first letter of the grade the probated teacher used to hand out)?

Answer: F

The movie "F" was directed by Johannes Roberts. The protagonist Robert Anderson (role by David Schofield) was a teacher who gave one of his pupils an F grade - F for failing. As he explained, the pupil was "barely even literate". In the ensuing quarrel, the pupil wounded Robert Anderson, but Anderson got the blame. So he was forced to leave on vacation for three months.

But then at night he sees hooded and armed people entering the school...
10. What is the name of the character played by Eddie Murphy in "Holy Man" (1998)?

Answer: G

Ricky Hayman (role by Jeff Goldblum) is the sales manager of a shopping television network with seriously declining sales. But then Ricky meets G - a would-be example for a devoted life (whether christian, buddhist or any other religion - G sets an example). Alas, G has some quirky traits too...
