Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1897 London, a father gives his delighted small daughter Olivia a mechanical ballerina doll that he has made for her birthday. The happy scene is disrupted when someone breaks into their home and snatches the toy maker and the doll. What is unusual about the kidnapper?

Answer: He is a rather battered bat who can't fly.

Mr. Hiram Flaversham, voiced by Alan Young, and his daughter Olivia, voiced by Susanne Pollatschek, are enjoying a quiet evening celebrating Olivia's eighth birthday when their home is invaded and Mr. Flaversham is abducted by a bat (whose name we later learn is Fidget) who has a peg leg and a crippled wing. But why would anyone want to kidnap a toy maker?
2. After the opening credits we meet Dr. Dawson, who tells us he has just returned from several years' service in Afghanistan with Her Majesty's 66th Regiment. As he walks along the rainy street, he comes upon Olivia, who tells him she is looking for Basil of Baker Street. Has Dr. Dawson heard of Basil?

Answer: No

Dr. Dawson, voiced by Val Bettin, assures Olivia, though, that he remembers where Baker Street is, and suggests that they look for Basil together.
3. When Dr. Dawson and Olivia find Basil, they have a very hard time getting his attention. What is Basil so busy doing?

Answer: He is engaged in forensic experiments.

Basil, voiced by Barrie Ingham, is very busy performing a series of rather bewildering experiments which, he explains, are designed to help him catch the master criminal Prof. Ratigan. When Olivia tells him her father was taken by a bat with a crippled wing and a peg leg, he suddenly becomes very interested.
4. What upsets Prof. Ratigan more than anything else?

Answer: Being called a rat

Prof. Ratigan, voiced by Vincent Price, becomes terribly upset when anyone says he is a rat. He is, he insists, a large mouse, thank you very much! While his gang are singing to him, telling him how brilliant and devious he is, one hapless henchman, Bartholomew, accidentally calls him a rat. Ratigan summons Felicia, who eats poor Bartholomew.

After that, there are no more mistakes of that kind.
5. Prof. Ratigan isn't specific at first, but we know his latest dastardly plot involves removing an important person. Who is Ratigan's target?

Answer: The Queen of England

Ratigan plans to assassinate Queen Mousetoria and take over the government. And he needs Mr. Flaversham's skills to do it.
6. When Basil and his companions set out to find Mr. Flaversham, he enlists help. What kind of creature does Basil bring along?

Answer: A dog

In this film, Toby the Basset Hound belongs to Basil's upstairs human neighbor, Sherlock Holmes. In the Holmes canon, however, Toby is a half spaniel, half lurcher owned by one Mr. Sherman, a "bird-stuffer" and owner of a menagerie, who willingly lends him to Holmes whenever Holmes needs him.

Basil's friend Toby is enthusiastic but not terribly well behaved. To Basil's chagrin it is sweet little Olivia that Toby obeys faithfully.

The detective and his companions see Fidget outside the window and set out in pursuit. Toby leads them to a toyshop where Fidget is gathering supplies for Ratigan. They are close on the bat's trail when disaster strikes!
7. While Basil and his companions are searching for Mr. Flaversham, Olivia is kidnapped.

Answer: True

Olivia wanders away from Basil and the doctor, who become embroiled with some rambunctious toys. This gives Fidget the opportunity to nab the little mouse. All is not totally lost though. In their search for Olivia, the friends find the checklist Fidget dropped. Scientific analysis of the paper and ink, together with his vast knowledge, allow Basil to deduce where they need to go next.
8. Prof. Ratigan arranges to have Basil's photograph taken.

Answer: True

It's actually a little more complicated than that. Basil and Dr. Dawson eventually find Olivia. Unfortunately, they also find the ambush Ratigan has laid for them. Since he is late for an appointment, he doesn't have time to stay and watch. So, gloating over having finally caught his archenemy, the professor sets his Rube Goldberg device and leaves, confident that when he returns, he will find Basil dead and a photographic record of his demise. And, indeed, brilliant though Basil is, Ratigan might have been right. He reckons without the good doctor though.

As Basil is berating himself for his stupidity in walking into Ratigan's trap, Dr. Dawson shakes him out of his self-absorption and encourages him to think. Brought back to the problem at hand, the great detective at once spots the weakness of the trap and exploits that weakness to extract them all from it just in time. So the camera takes a photograph, not of Basil dead, but of him and his companions very much alive and ready to set off on the last stage of their adventure.
9. When we finally learn the details of Prof. Ratigan's plot, we learn also why he needed the services of a master toymaker. What did he want Mr. Flaversham to build?

Answer: A clockwork replica of the queen of England

Ratigan and his gang kidnap Queen Mousetoria as she is preparing to celebrate her Diamond (sixtieth) Jubilee, replacing her with a clockwork replica that Mr. Flaversham is forced to operate. This ruse will, Ratigan thinks, allow him to usurp the throne and impose his tyrannical rule on the kingdom. But Basil has other ideas.
10. Where does the climactic scene of the film take place?

Answer: On and around the clock of Big Ben

Basil and his companions foil Ratigan's evil skeme and rescue both the queen and Mr. Flaversham. That's not the end of the adventure though, because Ratigan escapes.

With Fidget as steersman, he grabs Olivia as a hostage and takes off in his dirigible. Ever resourceful, Basil improvises an airship of his own and sets off in pursuit. The ensuing battle carries the adversaries to the great clock, onto its face and even insides its massive works. The heart stopping fight culminates with the great clock striking ten. Ratigan falls off the clock face, disappearing into the fog below, never to be seen again. But the victory is bittersweet. Basil has fallen with him... or has he?

The friends are in despair, until Basil reappears. He has saved himself by catching hold of part of the professor's dirigible.

Back in Baker Street, The Flavershams thank Basil again and say goodbye. The doctor too makes ready to leave, much to the detective's dismay. But just then, a beautiful and elegant young lady mouse, who is in need of Basil's services, knocks on the door. The detective introduces Dr. Dawson as his associate with whom he conducts all his cases. And so, the doctor tells us as the conversation fades and the camera zooms out to show a wider view of London, he stayed and conducted many investigations with his friend Basil of Baker Street, the great mouse detective.
