Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1988 film is the story of two brothers, Raymond and Charlie Babbitt, who develop a bond while on a road trip across the United States?

Answer: Rain Man

'Rain Man' was the winner for Best Picture from 1988. It also garnered awards for Best Director (Barry Levinson) and Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman). Director Barry Levinson appears at the end of the film as the psychiatrist who is evaluating Raymond.
2. Which of these would be the correct setting for the 1988 blockbuster action hit 'Die Hard', one of the great action films of all-time?

Answer: Office building

Specifically, 'Die Hard', starring Bruce Willis and directed by John McTiernan, was set in the fictional Nakatomi Plaza (the real life 'Fox Plaza' - not surprising since the film was made by Fox Studios). The great supporting cast in this film included Reginald VelJohnson, Bonnie Bedelia, Alexander Godunov, Paul Gleason, William Atherton and, of course, Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber.
3. Two little Japanese girls, Mei and Satsuki, move into a home in the rural countryside with their father so that they can be near the hospital where their mother is recuperating from illness. In this setting, the two girls meet several magical creatures who help them cope with their new situation. What is the name of this wonderful animated film by Japanese master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki?

Answer: My Neighbor Totoro

'My Neighbor Totoro' was one of the earlier films by Miyazaki, who has also directed such popular animated films as 'Princess Mononoke' and 'Spirited Away'. The larger Totoro (aka 'King Totoro') is the mascot of Miyazaki's film studio, Studio Ghibli.
4. One of the great buddy films of all-time, 'Midnight Run' features the acting pair-up of Charles Grodin and which of these Hollywood tough guys?

Answer: Robert De Niro

The chemistry between Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro really is what makes this film work, that and the line-up of great character actors that includes Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina, Joe Pantoliano and Philip Baker Hall, among others.

Filming of 'Midnight Run' took place at 14 different locations in six U.S. states, and the river scene was filmed in New Zealand!
5. 'Bull Durham' is on the top of many 'greatest baseball movie of all-time' lists (including my own). What helps make this wonderful 1988 film work is the excellent cast, which includes all but which of the following?

Answer: Geena Davis

Directed by Ron Shelton, 'Bull Durham' features Costner as Crash Davis, a nearly washed-up catcher who has made a career in the minor leagues. Tim Robbins is Nuke LaLoosh, a brash young pitcher on his way to baseball stardom in the major leagues. Susan Sarandon is Annie Savoy, a local vamp/baseball fan who gets involved in a love triangle with these two players. Sarandon absolutely shines, and the supporting cast, led by Trey Wilson and Robert Wuhl, helps create a feeling of authenticity to the film.
6. Take the fiery combination of Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, add a fantastic supporting cast that includes Frances McDormand, Brad Dourif, and R. Lee Ermey, throw in the directing edge of Alan Parker and stir them all together in an early 1960s southern pot of racial tension and what movie do you have?

Answer: Mississippi Burning

'Mississippi Burning' is the story of two FBI agents who are sent to Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of three young civil rights activists. The movie was based on the real-life murders of three young men named J. E. Chaney, Mickey Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman.

Dafoe and Hackman are excellent!
7. 'Stand and Deliver' is certainly one of the quiet gems of 1988. One of the best films ever at depicting proper teaching techniques in a classroom setting, it features Edward James Olmos as which legendary teacher in East Los Angeles?

Answer: Jaime Escalante

Olmos received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. The cast also included standout performances by Lou Diamond Phillips, Rosanna DeSoto and Andy Garcia.

If you want to see how to motivate kids in a classroom, this is your movie.
8. 'Grave of the Fireflies' was one of the most poignant and beautiful animated films ever made. Also known as 'Hotaru No Haka', in which country was this delicate cartoon classic produced?

Answer: Japan

Be prepared, 'Grave of the Fireflies' is a tearjerker of the first degree. It tells the story of two seemingly orphaned children who struggle to survive in post-WWII Japan.

This film was produced by the makers of 'Spirited Away' and 'Princess Mononoke', and in fact was produced concurrently with the film 'My Neighbor Totoro', also by the same studio (Ghibli).

It was based on a true story.
9. Controversy, thy name is 'The Last Temptation of Christ'. Which of these actors was *NOT* involved in this challenging but fascinating depiction of Christ's final earthly struggles, directed by Martin Scorsese?

Answer: Robert De Niro

Controversy and screen-slashing aside, 'The Last Temptation of Christ' is a beautiful, well-acted movie that still provokes a great deal of interesting discussion every time it is aired. In some countries, the movie was banned from theaters, while in others it is *still* banned from television screenings!

The movie is based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis.
10. Matthew Broderick makes the list here with his excellent performance as young Eugene Jerome in the 1988 war-comedy 'Biloxi Blues'. Directed by Mike Nichols, upon whose play (and screenplay) is this charming film based?

Answer: Neil Simon

Everything is enjoyable about this film, from Matthew Broderick's tongue-in-cheek performance to the wacky and entertaining Neil Simon dialogue. 'Biloxi Blues' also includes another wonderful turn by the unpredictable Christopher Walken, here playing a drill sergeant. It's worth a look.
