Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Why don't you come out, come out, to my twist party Come out, where the bright moon shines Come out, we'll dance the night away I'm gonna make you mi-yi-yine." This was one of the biggest songs of 1962. Name it.

Answer: Sherry

What a fabulous debut... #1 for five weeks! The 4 Seasons next hit "Big Girls Don't Cry" duplicated the feat. Some quibblers might note that the Four Seasons actually had a #62 charting song in 1956 entitled "You're The Apple Of My Eye". However, the group at the time was called the Four Lovers. Before that, they were known as the Variatones.

However, in the intervening six years, there were personel changes and a lot of club dates before they became an "overnight success" in 1962. The final, and successful, lineup was formed in 1961 and included Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito.
2. "You know you twist, little girl You know you twist so fine Come on and twist a little closer now And let me know that you're mine." Another lyric from one of those 'dance song' hits. Which one?

Answer: Twist And Shout

This was the original by The Isley Brothers. It only made it to #17 on the Billboard charts but the Beatles' cover version in 1964 went to #2. The Isley Brothers from Cincinnati started as a gospel group in the 50's and by the mid-1960's had morphed into a R&B group and had moved to NYC. Their biggest hits, all in the R&B "mold", occurred between 1969 and 1975.
3. "This time I'm gonna take it myself and put it right in her hand. And if it comes back the very next day then I'll understand." What was the title of this #2 hit?

Answer: Return To Sender

Just another Presley hit but only a #2. Awwwww! He was now into the 6th year of his recording career and this song marked the thirtieth time he had a top 10 hit. By comparison, in essentially the same six years (1964-1970), the Beatles had 32 top 10 hits. Presley would have eight more and despite their breakup, the Beatles had three more from previously recorded material. Final tally of top 10's: Presley - 38; The Beatles - 35!
4. "See the way he walks down the street Watch the way he shuffles his feet My, he holds his head up high When he goes walking by. He's my guy." Another #1 hit from October 1962. It was?

Answer: He's A Rebel

This was The Crystals only #1 song and third chart entry. But was it? It's well documented now that the actual singing was performed by Darlene Love and The Blossoms! Phil Spector managed both groups as well as others. Love had done the lead singing for many of the groups in Spector's stable.

In this instance, he thought The Crystals needed the hype the most, so for promotional purposes, he released this song as by The Crystals. Didn't work apparently... within ten months, the Crystals would have their last top 40 success and drop from view.
5. "When I saw you walking down the street, I said that's the kind of gal I'd like to meet. She's so pretty. Lord, she's fine. I'm gonna make her mine all mine." This #1 hit from Bruce Channel was entitled?

Answer: Hey! Baby

It was also his ONLY hit. It was #1 for three weeks.
6. "_______ rose, _______ rose, why I want you, heaven knows. Though I love you with a love true, who can cling to a _______ rose?" Fill in all the blanks with the same word and you've completed the song's title.

Answer: Ramblin'

"Ramblin' Rose" was a #2 hit for Nat "King" Cole in the fall of 1962. Within thirty months, he will have succumbed to cancer at the age of 47.
7. "Early in the morning we'll be startin' out, some honeys will be coming along. We're loading up our Woody with our boards inside and headin' out singing our song" Essentially, I'm asking you to identify the first 'surf song' to be something other than a regional hit. It peaked at #14 in the fall of 1962.

Answer: Surfin' Safari

The Beach Boys did this one. Twenty six years later, they would record their last top 40 hit, "Kokomo". They would have 33 top 40 hits in between!
8. Just by coincidence (so that I could do this quiz question over 40 years later), Burl Ives only had four top 40 songs, all in 1962. Here's the lyric, you name the Ives hit! "If you see me with a great big smile At some party where the fun runs wild If tears start to flow and I fall apart Please don't think you broke my heart"

Answer: Funny Way Of Laughing

Although written by different people, "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Funny Way Of Laughing" were very close thematically and can be easily confused. Conga-rats to those that got this one right. Ives had a very interesting career as a Broadway, film and T.V. actor, a folk singing troubador and as a pop singer during this phase of his career.

He even played a little semi-pro football in his youth.
9. "When people ask of me, what would you like to be now that your not a kid anymore? I know just what to say, I answer right away, there's just one thing I've been wishing for." These lyrics are from one of the "Johnny" songs (songs with Johnny in the title) that were popular in 1962. True or False?

Answer: False

No sir! This came from one hit wonder Marcie Blaine's recording of "Bobby's Girl" which rose to #3 on the charts. There was only one "Bobby" song as opposed to no less than five "Johnny" songs that achieved top 40 status that year. They were: "Johnny Angel" (#1) and "Johnny Loves Me" (#21) both by Shelley Faberes, "Johnny Get Angry (#7) by Joanie Sommers, "Johnny Jingo" (#21) by Hayley Mills and finally, "Johnny Will" (#35) by Pat Boone.
10. "We ate and ate at a hot dog stand We danced around to a rockin' band And when I could, I gave that girl a hug" Where in Palisades Park did the singer do his huggin'?

Answer: in the tunnel of love

In "Palisades Park", a #3 song, Freddie Cannon sits next to a young miss on a shoot-the-chute, pretty soon they're holding hands and then he made his bold move in the tunnel of love. "You'll never know how great a kiss can feel when you stop at the top of a Ferris wheel, when I fell in love down at Palisades Park".

These immortal lines were penned by no other than Chuck Barris, the host of "The Gong Show" among others, and the subject of the recent movie "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind". Palisades Park was ripped down for housing development in the late '60's or early 70's.

It was in New Jersey.
