Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This songstress tried her hand at recording in the late 1970's and finally got her hit with the help of an old schoolmate and disco success. Who recorded "Yes I'm Ready" in 1980?

Answer: Teri DeSario

Billboard number two, March 1, 1980. Terri DeSario hails from Miami, Florida and grew up learning all genres of music. She was a lover of jazz, and even played the harp. She had a minor hit called "Pleasure Train" in 1978, which was written by Barry Gibb of The BeeGees.

Her only Top 40 hit however was this cover of a Barbara Mason tune, first released in 1965. She collaborated with her high school friend, Harry Wayne Casey, to send this song up the charts. Harry Wayne Casey is better known as "KC" of the "KC and the Sunshine Band"
2. This diverse musician has had Top 10 hits on both the U.S. Singles charts, and the U.S. Country charts in their career. Which talented musician gave us "Giving It Up For Your Love" in 1981?

Answer: Delbert McClinton

Billboard number eight, Februrary 21, 1981. Delbert McClinton, born in Lubbock Texas in 1940, gave us this song in 1981. He is a Grammy winning artist and has been a band leader since 1962. He charted this song off an album called "The Jealous Kind". In 1992 he recorded a duet with country legend Tanya Tucker called "Tell Me About It" which became a number four single on the Country charts.

He also won two Grammy awards, the first in 1991 for a duet with Bonnie Raitt called "Good Man, Good Woman", and in 2006 for his album titled "Cost Of Living". Oh, and one more thing. If you ever see the movie "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray, the opening song called "Weatherman" was his as well.
3. These artists are known is some circles as "Britain's National Orchestra". Who performed "Hooked On Classics" in 1982?

Answer: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Billboard number ten, January 30, 1982. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1946. They are based in London. Over the decades they have performed and recorded some of the most timeless music ever written, with most of the major symphonic classics, and classical artists being represented. "Hooked On Classics" was actually a series of recordings produced by the orchestra in the 1980s and what they did is to take snippets from a number of very recognizable classical songs, and play them with a background beat.

The result was almost a disco/classical sound that was very successful.
4. This British pop group scored their only Top 40 U.S. entry with "Come On Eileen" in 1983. Who were they?

Answer: Dexy's Midnight Runners

Billboard number one, April 23, 1983. This group was formed in 1978 in Brimingham England, and has had numerous changes over the years with over twenty former and current members. They scored a number one hit in the U.K. with "Geno", but that song failed to chart in the U.S.

They had two other Top 20 U.K. hits before the release of "Come On Eileen" in 1983. This song made it to the top of the charts both in the U.S. and U.K., but there was no subsequent U.S. follow up tune, although they did release other hits in the U.K.
5. This 1984 novelty song paid tribute to a world famous comedy team. Who recorded "The Curly Shuffle" that year?

Answer: Jump "N The Saddle

Billboard number 15, January 21, 1984. This tribute to world renowned comedy team The Three Stooges hit the charts in 1984. The group themselves had a dispute over the rights to the song, and subsequent hits, which was never resolved. So, unfortunately, no more novelty songs from this group.
6. A popular soap opera star crashed the charts in 1985 with "All I Need". Who was this guy?

Answer: Jack Wagner

Billboard number two, January 12, 1985. Wagner played a character named "Frisco Jones" in the popular U.S. soap opera "General Hospital" in the 1980s, and also had a five year run in the 1990s on the primetime soap called "Melrose Place". His skill as a musician helped him win the part in General Hospital, and it also served him well here. Jack has released a number of albums, and had five singles on the Billboard charts between 1985 and 1987.

This song was the only one to make the Top 40 in the U.S.
7. This artist who was part of a major band of the 1980s and beyond, tried his hand as a soloist in 1986 with a song called "You're A Friend Of Mine". Who is this?

Answer: Clarence Clemons

Billboard number 18, January 18, 1986. It was Clemons, as a member of "The E Street Band" of Bruce Springsteen fame, who soloed with this hit that year. Known as "The Big Man" among his peers, he is known for his distinctive saxophone. This song was a collaboration with Jackson Browne, and reached the Top 20.

His sax was also easily recognized in Aretha Franklin's 1985 hit "Freeway Of Love" and he can been seen in that music video.
8. "Shake You Down" was the debut hit for this soulful musician of the 1980s. Can you possibly name him?

Answer: Gregory Abbott

Billboard number one, January 1987. Although not unheard of, its unusual to debut with a number one hit, and then disappear from the charts entirely. Abbot's song was a number one hit early in 1987, and he never even charted a Top 100 hit in the U.S. again.

He did try R&B, but with no success. Abbott actually has more noteriety for non-music issues. He was once married to Freda Payne (Band Of Gold), and also did a spread for "Playgirl" magazine, being featured as one the "Ten Sexiest Male Recording Artists"
9. "Dirty Dancing" makes an appearance in this quiz because of "She's Like The Wind" which was part of the soundtrack in 1988. Who was the person responsible for this?

Answer: Patrick Swayze

Billboard number three, February 27, 1988. This song was actually written in 1984, by Swayze along with Stacy Widelitz for the soundtrack of the film "Grandview USA" but didn't survive the cut. The single was re-recorded for the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack with vocals by Swayze and Wendy Fraser, a non-musician (she's actually a field hockey player) who sang background.
10. This act started 1989 with a bang when they took "I Remember Holding You" into the U.S. Top 10.

Answer: Boys Club

Billboard number eight, January 14, 1989. "Boys Club" was a Minneapolis, Minnesota duo, who were referred to as "Minnesota's version of Wham" in their local area. They were comprised of Joe Pasquale and Gene Hunt. Hunt had acheived some success earlier in the decade as a member of "The Jets" who had such hits as "Crush On You", "You Got It All" and "Make It Real". This song was the only release as Boys Club to crack the Top 40. They were also the first musical group to appear on the "New Mickey Mouse Club" when it debuted in 1989.

Note: If you'd like to hear any of these songs, all are available on YouTube.
