Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These lyrics are from the first single on Evanescence's self-titled album. What is the name of the song? "Do what you, what you want 'til you find what you're looking for (got to remember who you really are)."

Answer: What You Want

There was a gap of around five years between Evanescence releasing their second album, "The Open Door", and their third one, "Evanescence". In an interview with MTV, singer Amy Lee admitted that the band's sudden success meant that they had been thrust into the limelight in their early twenties. After releasing and touring their first two albums, she needed some space to figure out who she was as an adult and where to go next.

In an interview with Loudwire, Amy Lee explained that the contrast between the heavy instruments and pop-like vocals on "What You Want" was intended to create an 'I don't care' attitude, because the band were having fun making music again.
2. Not all of the songs on "Evanescence" were heavy. Which one had a slower, more mellow tone?

Answer: Swimming Home

In a Loudwire interview, Amy Lee talked about the writing process for the 2011 album. She wrote a number of songs with a programmer named William B. Hunt. Although they were mostly electronic in style, some of them were developed and ended up on the finished album. William B. Hunt is credited as a writer on a couple of the album's tracks, including "Swimming Home".
3. Which song title completes the lyric? "I'm all out of love for you, baby And now that I've tried everything I'll numb the pain till I am _____."

Answer: Made of Stone

The line ends with the title of the song, "Made of Stone". Singer Amy Lee talked about the recording process in an interview with NME. She explained that it had taken around a month to record all of the vocal tracks for "Evanescence". When they chose the tracks to include on the final album, Lee realised that they all contained tricky vocals.

It took a long time to record the tracks because she pushed herself to the point where she was a bit concerned about performing the songs live!
4. "Sick of it all, sick of it all, we will not follow." Is "Sick" on Evanescence's self-titled 2011 album, "Evanescence"?

Answer: Yes

In an NME interview, Amy Lee explained that on previous albums, she had worked on songs independently or with one other writer. For "Evanescence", however, the band worked together to compose most of the songs. "Sick" first started in a band jam session and demonstrated that the new band line-up (there have been many) were on the same page and could write songs together.
5. "Over the fear that I will never find a way to heal my soul, And I will wander 'til the end of time, torn away from you." In the title of this "Evanescence" song, what is broken?

Answer: My heart

"My Heart is Broken" was the second single to be released from "Evanescence". Amy Lee explained how the song came about in an NME interview. It was written in the same session as "What You Want" and Amy originally played the piano part of the song on a harp. After the band had inputted their ideas, however, the tempo became too fast for a harp. So in the end, Amy played the piano.
6. Which body of water was a song title on "Evanescence"?

Answer: Oceans

In an interview with Spin, Amy Lee said that oceans became a theme on the album, and that the song "Oceans" was really fun to play. The song starts with very low synth and then builds as the band joins in. The band used a number of keyboards, including the vintage keyboard, Moog Taurus Pedal, to record the song. It was one of the first songs from the new album that the band played live in 2011.
7. Which "Evanescence" song begins with: "It's too late to change your mind, Even though this fragile world is tearing apart at the seams"?

Answer: Erase This

According to an NME interview, "Erase This" was originally called "Vanilla" and was one of the last tracks to be completed for the album. Singer and songwriter Amy Lee explained that the music for most of the tracks on the album was written collaboratively and recorded first. Lee then had to go away and write the lyrics for the songs, which was a different method to how previous Evanescence albums had been written.
8. Three singles were released from 2011's "Evanescence". Which emotional track was the third single and begins with a simple piano and Amy Lee's astounding vocals?

Answer: Lost in Paradise

"Lost in Paradise" begins quite slowly and the simple piano chords set a sombre mood. The rest of the band join in at the climax (a bit like "My Immortal" and "Lithium" on previous albums), making a very emotional song.

In a Loudwire interview, Amy Lee said that "Lost in Paradise" was a very emotional song for her too. Originally, she wrote it as a personal song for herself with no intention of including it on the album at all. They were weeks into the pre-production of the album before she played it for the rest of the band.
9. Which lyric is from the third track on "Evanescence", "The Change"?

Answer: I've been screaming on the inside and I know you feel the pain.

"I've been screaming on the inside and I know you feel the pain" is a lyric from "The Change". Originally, according to an NME interview with Amy Lee, the song was called "Purple".

The standard version of 2011's "Evanescence" contains twelve tracks, but a deluxe version was also released, which included a total of sixteen songs. The extra tracks were called "New Way to Bleed", "Say You Will", "Disappear", and "Secret Door".
10. "Save yourself, don't look back, Tearing us apart until it's all gone, The only world I've ever known sleeps beneath the waves." Which 2011 event inspired the song, "Never Go Back"?

Answer: An earthquake and tsunami in Japan

In a Loudwire interview, Amy Lee explained the writing process the band used for their 2011 album. They wrote the music together and then Lee would write lyrics later. While the band were writing songs in March 2011, Japan suffered a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

When Lee came to write lyrics later that day, she found that the disaster was preying on her mind, so she decided to write the song about the victims in Japan.
