Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which duo, one of whom was Jane Asher's brother, had a hit with a Paul McCartney penned song?

Answer: Peter and Gordon

Peter Asher and Gordon Weller had a hit in 1964 with "World Without Love". The song was deemed not suitable for The Beatles so Paul McCartney gave it to Peter and Gordon, but not before it had been offered to and rejected by Billy J. Kramer. It reached number one in both the United Kingdom and America.
2. Which group reached number one in the United Kingdom in 1969 with a cover version of "Ob La Di Ob La Da"?

Answer: Marmalade

Originally recorded by The Beatles on "The White Album", the song was covered by Marmalade. They were a Scottish group, and when "Ob La Di Ob La Da" went to number one they became the first group from Scotland ever to top the UK charts.
They followed up with their own song, "Reflections Of My Life", but then suffered personnel changes and bad publicity which led to a slow decline.
3. Who was the comedian and actor who did a cover version of "A Hard Day's Night", delivered in the style of a Shakespeare speech?

Answer: Peter Sellers

In 1965 Peter Sellers released a spoof single of "A Hard Day's Night". Done in the style of Laurence Olivier playing Richard III it was a top twenty hit, and was widely regarded as a novelty record. It has since come to be regarded as a work of comic genius.
4. Who had a 1963 hit with a Lennon and McCartney composition that contained these lyrics? "If you ever leave me, I'll be sad and blue Don't you ever leave me, I'm so in love with you"

Answer: Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas

The song is "Bad To Me" and was a UK number one in 1963. In 1964 it became the first Beatles song not sung by The Beatles to appear in the Billboard 100 Top 40. Managed by Brian Epstein, who also managed The Beatles, the group's first record was "Do You Want To Know A Secret", also a Lennon and McCartney song.
5. Which group had a 1963 hit with "Hello Little Girl"?

Answer: The Fourmost

This song was never recorded by The Beatles, although they did play it in their unsuccessful Decca audition. It is believed to be the first song ever written by John Lennon. The Fourmost recorded it in 1963 and had a UK number nine hit with it.
6. The Beatles version of this song, which starts "I wanna be your lover baby", was sung by Ringo Starr, and appeared on "With The Beatles". However, another group took it and had their first ever UK hit with it. This other group were as big as The Beatles, but not as liked by parents. Can you name them please?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The song is "I Wanna Be Your Man". Legend has it that Andrew Oldham, manager of The Rolling Stones, met Lennon and McCartney in the street and told them he desperately needed a song for single release. Lennon and McCartney then accompanied him back to the recording studio and finished off the song, which they were already working on, in a corner of the room.

It was the Rolling Stones second single and their first hit, reaching number twelve.
7. Which great American jazz singer included a cover version of "Hey Jude" on her 1969 album, "Sunshine of Your Love"?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald has covered several Lennon and McCartney songs. In addition to "Hey Jude" she has done album recordings of "Something", "A Hard Day's Night" and "Got To Get You Into My Life". She also used to regularly include "Hey Jude" in her live performances.
8. In 2008, which musician, known for his involvement with "The Cars", released "The Beatles Uke", an album consisting entirely of instrumental versions of Beatles numbers?

Answer: Greg Hawkes

Hawkes started experimenting with the ukulele in 2001. In 2008 he created the sound of a ukulele orchestra by means of multi-tracking to record an album of 15 Beatles songs. He calls the effect he has created "UKEsymphonic". Tracks include "Penny Lane", "Yellow Submarine" and "Eleanor Rigby".
9. Which punk group did a 1983 cover version of "Dear Prudence"?

Answer: Siouxsie and The Banshees

Recorded by The Beatles in 1968 on "The White Album", this cover version became the biggest hit Siouxsie and The Banshees had had, reaching number three in the United Kingdom. It was one of their rare singles that was not taken from an album.
10. Which actor talked his way through "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", possibly one of the worst Beatles cover versions ever? Makes you wish the Klingons had got to him first.

Answer: William Shatner

This cover version appeared on Shatner's first album "The Transformed Man" released (or escaped) in 1968. The album was parodied, laughed at and criticised, but despite this Mr. Shatner continued his musical career. His version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was chosen by George Clooney as a disc he would take with him if marooned on a desert island - as an incentive to escape.
