Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. They split up in 2000, came back together for the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony, did a three month tour, and then split again, saying this time it was for good. Which girl group is this?

Answer: Spice Girls

The Spice Girls formed in 1994 and quickly became the number one girl group in the world. Album and single sales were in the multi-millions and they simply could not put a foot wrong. They won Brit Awards, MTV Awards, Billboard Awards and every live performance was a sell out. In 1998 Geri Halliwell announced she was leaving to concentrate on a solo career, but the remaining four, Mel B, Mel C, Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton, decided to carry on. This lasted until 2000 when they announced they were taking a break to allow each of them to develop solo careers. There was a brief reunion tour in 2007/08, but then they split again. In 2012 it was announced they were reuniting for the London Olympics, and their performance of their greatest hits was, for many, one of the highlights of the Closing Ceremony. A three month tour of Europe followed. A musical of their life, "Viva Forever", written by Jennifer Saunders opened in December 2012. They all co-operated with this, probably thinking that in the wake of the Olympics it would be successful, but it had disastrous reviews and closed due to poor ticket sales in June 2013. A potential 2014 tour was scrapped and they said they would never perform together again.

Question by Christinap
2. They formed in California in 1971, disbanded in 1980, and came together again in 1994 when Hell obviously had frozen over. Who are they?

Answer: Eagles

Eagles were probably the biggest bands in America in the mid 1970s. Their album "One of These Nights" produced three great singles, "One of These Nights", "Lyin Eyes" and "Take it to the Limit". They followed this up with "Hotel California", which sold some 32 million world wide. The title song became almost their anthem. They split up in 1980, saying they would get together again when hell froze over. Well, it must have happened, as in 1994 they got together and released "Hell Freezes Over". Since then they have toured from time to time, and released their first full studio album in over 20 years, "Long Road Out of Eden". They also toured in support of the album.

Question by Christinap
3. Which band reformed in 2007 for a one off charity event in London, with a son taking his dead father's place on drums?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham became four of the most influential heavy metal musicians of the 1970s. "Stairway to Heaven", which featured on their untitled fourth album, is one of the most covered songs of all time. Even Rolf Harris made a version of it. They split up in 1980 following the death of John Bonham. Since then they have come together every so often for charity events, the biggest of which was in 2007 in London when John Bonham's son, Jason, played drums for the band.

4. Always controversial for their lyrics and bad behaviour, the Punk band 'The Sex Pistols' were formed in 1975 and split in 1978 after a particularly rough tour of the USA. In 1996 they reformed minus one of the original lineup for the 'Filthy Lucre Tour'. Who was missing?

Answer: Sid Vicious

Sid Vicious (real name John Ritchie) had died in 1979 of a heroin overdose. His girlfriend Nancy Spungen, who was also heavily drug-dependent, died of a stab wound in the Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan, and Vicious was suspected of murder. He was bailed but later rearrested for assault, and spent time in rehabilitation on Rikers Island.
Upon his release he attended a celebration party, where he was supplied with heroin by his mother, who had been his supplier for many years. He overdosed and died in his sleep.

5. The Irish boy band, Boyzone, formed in 1993 and split in 2000. In 2008 they announced that they would re-form to play for the BBC 'Children in Need' appeal, and a tour was planned for the same year. Sadly, one of the band died unexpectedly in 2009. Who was it?

Answer: Stephen Gately

Gately died of a pulmonary edema when he was staying in his holiday home on Majorca. He had an unsuspected heart condition.
During the years when 'Boyzone' were split, Gately had pursued a successful career as a soloist and writer, and as a performer in musicals in London's West End.
Ronan Keating had also remained prominent in the music industry as a singer, song writer and manager. Keith Duffy had worked as an actor.
The other band member is Mikey Graham, who is also an actor, song writer and producer.

Question by invinoveritas
In 2010 the band released their album 'Brother', which featured performances by Gately and which was released earlier than planned as a tribute to him.
6. Which group, who split in 2005, reformed in 2009, and represented the United Kingdom in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Blue

Blue first formed in 2000 and had four successful albums and sixteen singles. In 2004 they said they were having a temporary break, but in 2005 this turned into a split to enable the members to pursue solo careers. In 2009 they came back together, but did not really hit national attention again until 2011, when it was announced they would enter the Eurovision Song Contest. Regrettably even they could not win it, their entry, "I Can", came 11th. The four members, Duncan James, Anthony Costa, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe, then went on to join "The Big Reunion", a reality television series. This featured several groups getting back together again and was a concert tour as well as a television show.

7. Since originally forming in 1972, Van Halen have split with, and had several reunions with which lead vocalist, who also plays the harmonica and the saxophone?

Answer: David Lee Roth

Although Van Halen first began in 1972 (with guitarist Eddie Van Halen as the lead vocalist), perhaps their most famous lineup was first formed in 1974. Consisting of brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen as well as bassist Michael Anthony and lead singer David Lee Roth this lineup continued until 1985 when the band split with David Lee Roth. Despite several other lead vocalists taking the place of Roth in the intervening years he rejoined the band permanently in 2006, releasing the album 'A Different Kind of Truth' in 2012.

Answer: The Police

The main lineup of The Police consisted of three members. Sting was the lead vocalist and also plays bass guitar, Andy Summers was the lead guitarist while Stewart Copeland played drums. The most successful lineup for The Stone Roses consists of vocalist Ian Brown, John Squire on lead guitar, bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield, and Alan "Reni" Wren on drums. 10. Which lead singer disbanded the Pixies in 1993 before reforming them again eleven years later in 2004?

Answer: Black Francis

Funnily enough 'Black Francis' is not the real name of the lead singer. His actual name is Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV and he was also known as 'Frank Black' during his intervening project 'Frank Black and the Catholics'. The Pixies have released several studio albums, including 'Surfer Rosa' in 1988 and 'Trompe le Monde' in 1991.
