Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All I can hear of this song is two voices, in close harmony, singing 'Wake up, little' before the disc skips. What name is missing from these lyrics?

Answer: Susie

'Wake Up Little Susie' gave Don and Phil Everly their first number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1957. Their previous release, in the same year, was 'Bye Bye Love', which managed only number two on the charts. The duo continued to have hits until the early 1960s, when they were pushed from the limelight by the British invasion. Ironically, the brothers were credited by The Beatles for inspiring them to try singing harmony, and in another twist of fate The Everly Brothers remained popular in the UK while The Beatles were conquering the USA. All the girls named were featured in songs by The Everlys.

2. I'm being invited to a club by the two singers of the next song. It sounds good - the 'drinks are free' and 'all that's missing is ____'. What has the CD skipped over in this song?

Answer: The sea

The song is 'Club Tropicana', recorded by Wham! in 1983. It was written by the two members of the band, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, and became their fourth hit on the UK Singles Chart. The duo made no impact in the USA with this, or their previous releases, but their next two songs - 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' and 'Careless Whisper' - each reached the top of the charts in both the UK and USA.

The lyrics quoted come from the chorus, and the photo clue shows the letter C in various different fonts.
3. 'Acting on your best behaviour; turn your back on ___' are lyrics from a big 1985 hit for a pair of British singers. What words are missing from the end of those I've quoted?

Answer: Mother nature

The lyrics were taken from 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World', by Tears for Fears, otherwise known as Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. The song was one of three number one hits the pair had in the USA. The others were 'Shout' and 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' in 1984 and 1989 respectively. Surprisingly, they never made the top of the charts in their home country although they had several top ten hits.

4. I've heard a bit more of this next song - 'watch out boy, she'll chew you up' is clear, before the CD skips the singers telling you 'she's a' - which of these?

Answer: Maneater

The song was recorded by Daryl Hall and John Oates, and was one of several number one hits the pair had in their home country of the USA. 'Maneater' hit the top in 1982 and the song was also their biggest hit in the UK, where it rose to number six on the Singles Charts. Among the other hits for the pair were 'Kiss on My List', 'Private Eyes' and 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)' all from 1981.

5. A Scottish duo is next on my CD player, singing about 'wear my heart on my __'. Which word is missing?

Answer: Sleeve

The singers were Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle, who had previously been part of the band McGuinness Flint. Gallagher and Lyle were responsible for the song writing for the band, and wrote both of their hits: 'Malt and Barley Blues' (1971) and 'When I'm Dead and Gone' from 1970. Benny and Graham began recording as a duo, with their 1976 album 'Breakaway' producing the singles 'Heart on my Sleeve' and the title song. Their success was shortlived, and they split as a duo in 1980, although both remained in the music business and have enjoyed success with songwriting.

The photo shows a record and its sleeve as an additional clue.
6. The next song, a hit from 1983, only started with the third line, which is sung by a woman. It began with 'I travel the world and the' before cutting off the final words. How does the line finish?

Answer: Seven seas

The lyrics come from 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)' written by the two members of Eurhythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. The first lines are 'Sweet dreams are made of this; who am I to disagree' before going on to those quoted in the question. The song became the first big hit for the pair, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. They followed up with several others including 'Thorn in My Side' in 1986, 'Here Comes the Rain Again' (1984) and 'I Saved the World Today' from 1999. Eurythmics have never officially disbanded, but both members have pursued solo projects for several years and perform together only rarely.

7. A pair of American singers is next in the CD player. I pick up the words 'there's no tenderness like before in your' before the player decides to skip the rest. What should have been the last word of the line?

Answer: Fingertips

The song is 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling', sung by The Righteous Brothers. The first lines are 'you never close your eyes any more when I kiss your lips', but 'hips' and 'ships' don't feature. The singers were Bobby Hatfield, who died in 2003, and Bill Medley and the combination of Hatfield's tenor and Medley's baritone could send shivers down the spine. 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' was their biggest hit, in 1964, and the song was featured in the 1986 film 'Top Gun'.

The photo of fingers ought to have settled any doubts you may have had.
8. A song about the loneliness of being on the road features next. It was written by Paul Simon while he was on tour in England, and the lines include the words 'every day's an endless stream of ____ and magazines'. What word is missing from those quoted?

Answer: Cigarettes

The lyrics were taken from 'Homeward Bound', sung by Simon and Garfunkel, and allegedly written by Paul when he was at Widnes Railway Station, an unlikely source of inspiration. It was recorded for the album 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme' which came out in 1966. 'Homeward Bound' was released as a single to follow up 'The Sound of Silence', which had been the breakthrough hit for the pair. They went on to have numerous hits, before their relationship broke down and they split up in 1970 to pursue solo careers. They have reunited on several occasions, although with little chart success.

9. I'm now listening to a song which made number one in 1985 in both the USA and UK. The performers are English and are described as 'electronic pop'. The lyrics I can hear are 'in a restaurant in a ______ town', but I've missed the bit that tells me where it is. The location is the same as the girls in the title, so is which of these?

Answer: West End

The song starts with these lyrics: 'Sometimes you're better off dead;
there's a gun in your hand and it's pointing at your head' and is a description of the differences in life between different classes - 'the East End boys' and 'West End girls', with the latter three words being the song's title. The song was written by Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant, who made up the duo called Pet Shop Boys and became one of their biggest hits. Other hits for them include 'It's a Sin' from 1987, a version of 'Always on My Mind', also in 1987, and 'Go West' in 1993.

10. 'When they get to the part; where he's breaking her heart; it can really make me cry' are the lines I hear before the CD skips once more. What three words, also the song's title, come at the end of the final line of this part of the song?

Answer: Yesterday Once More

The lines finish with 'just like before; it's yesterday once more', a 1973 hit for the brother and sister pairing of Richard and Karen Carpenter. 'Yesterday Once More', part written by Richard, was just one of a string of hits for the Carpenters which began in 1970. The song reached number two on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart in 1973. Others hits include 'Close to You' from 1970, 'Please Mr. Postman' in 1974 and 'There's a Kind of Hush' from 1976. Karen died in 1983 having suffered from an eating disorder for some years.
