Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song from 1968 began with the lyric: "My, my, the clock in the sky is pounding away with so much to say. A face, a voice, the overdub has no choice, and each cannot retrace."?

Answer: The Porpoise Song

This was the theme song to the movie "Head". It was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King (the one and same).
2. Which song contains the lyrics: "I can tell by your face, that you're looking to find a place, to settle your mind and reveal who you are."?

Answer: As We Go Along

This was the B-Side to the "Porpoise Song", and also penned by Carole King.
3. What classic Mike Nesmith penned song includes the lyric: "Dark and growing, figures move through prisms of no color. Hand in hand, they walk the night, but never know each other."?

Answer: Daily Nightly

This was the first song to feature the Moog Synthesizer on a recording. Micky owned the third one ever produced, but sold it shortly after the Monkees project. He always claimed that the best player of a Moog was the Moog itself.
4. A song that holds a very special place in Monkees history includes the lyric: "You tell me that you've never been this way before. You tell me things I know that I've heard somewhere." Which song was it?

Answer: The Girl I Knew Somewhere

This was the first song to feature all four Monkees playing their own instruments. Mike wrote the song, while Micky sang the lead. Peter played the harpsichord, and played the little dischord in the middle by accident.
5. "You stare at me in disbelief and say for you there's no relief, but I swear I'll prove you wrong." Peter has said that he has always liked this song, and still performs it to this day. What is the name of it?

Answer: Take A Giant Step

The B-Side to "Last Train to Clarksville". Another song penned by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. A precursor to the more psychedelic tunes that came along.
6. Mike pushed very hard to have his tunes included from the very beginning. Which of his tunes included: "For strength is mine when we're together, I'm with you I know I'll never have to pass the high road for the low."?

Answer: Papa Gene's Blues

This was the first song that actually had a Monkee play an instrument on it, when Mike pushed to have Peter sit in on acoustic guitar.
7. "When the world and I were young, just yesterday. Life was such a simple game a child could play." A great tune that described the era. What was it?

Answer: Shades of Gray

The unofficial album hit of "Headquarters", the group's first album played by their own hand.
8. One of the oddest songs lyrically that The Monkees played contained: "Solid brass statuary guards the door, used to come as one now comes as four, somebody here just sent for more" What song is it?

Answer: Auntie's Municipal Court

Mike had this habit of arbitrarily naming songs whatever suited him at the moment, saying that it came from writing his songs mostly as free-form poetry. "Good Clean Fun" was another example of this, since Mike picked the title when a studio exec told him that a song had to have a repeated hook and a theme that was good, clean fun.
9. "Hamilton, smiling down, telling more than before." The Monkees rerecorded this one in 1996. What is the name of the song?

Answer: Circle Sky

Also from the movie "Head", the Monkees recut a much harder version for their new release in 1997 "Justus". The song sounded excellent in the live concert scene in the movie.
10. One of the most famous songs in the Monkees catalog has these lines: "In this generation, in this loving time, in this generation, we will make the world shine." What is it?

Answer: For Pete's Sake

Peter wrote this song and the rest of the group was so taken with it that they made it the song for the closing credits.
