Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At Number One was "Something In The Air", a one-hit wonder from Thunderclap Newman, a band featuring John "Speedy "Keen, Jimmy McCulloch (later of Wings), Andy "Thunderclap" Newman, and which guitar god?

Answer: Pete Townshend

Thunderclap Newman was formed to showcase the talents of John "Speedy" Keen, who had been Pete Townshend's chauffeur.
2. At Number Two was Elvis Presley with a song containing the following lyrics: "A young man breaks away. He buys a gun, steals a car, tries to run, but he don't get far". Name the song.

Answer: In The Ghetto

"In The Ghetto" marked the start of Elvis's comeback - he hadn't had a big hit for three years when it was released.
3. At Number Three were the Rolling Stones with a song which became their eighth and last UK Number One. It was the sixth UK chart-topper penned by Jagger and Richards. Name the song.

Answer: Honky Tonk Women

"Honky Tonk Women" was climbing the charts just as Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool.
4. At Number Four was The Plastic Ono Band with a song which contained the following lines: "Ev'rybody's talkin' 'bout revolution, evolution, masturbation, flagellation, regulation, integrations, mediations, United Nations, congratulations". Name the song.

Answer: Give Peace A Chance

The Plastic Ono Band was more of a concept than a real band, and included among its performers at different times John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Keith Moon, Billy Preston and Phil Spector.
5. At Number Five, with "Hello Suzie", their fourth and final UK Top Ten hit, was a band with the same name as a difficult section of the Augusta National Golf Course. Who were they?

Answer: Amen Corner

The Amen Corner they were actually named after was a weekly spot at the Victoria Ballroom in Cardiff, where, every Sunday, DJ Doctor Rock would play American soul music. Over the past couple of decades their lead guitarist and singer Andy Fairweather Low has toured and played extensively with George Harrison, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, Roger Waters and Eric Clapton.
6. At Number Six was a one-hit wonder entitled "A Way Of Life" by a group which included Steve Rowland, Albert Hammond, Mike Hazlewood and Christine Holmes. What was the group called?

Answer: The Family Dogg

The other bands mentioned were all associated with Rowland, Hammond and Hazlewood.
Albert Hammond was awarded the OBE in 2000 for his services to music.
7. At Number Seven, where it peaked, was a song called "It Mek", by an act which had had a UK Number One the previous year with a song where many people thought the lyrics included the phrase "My Ears Are Alight", though it was actually "The Israelites"! Name the act.

Answer: Desmond Dekker and the Aces

The mis-hearing of the lyrics of "The Israelites" was set in concrete in 1989 when Maxell produced an advert showing a man doing a Bob Dylan "Subterranean Homesick Blues" style version of it, with what he thought were the lyrics on big cards.
8. At Number Eight, having peaked at Number Six, were the Beach Boys with a song containing these lyrics: "Where the shackles never hold me down. I'm gonna make a way for each happy day as my life turns around". Name the song.

Answer: Break Away

"Break Away" (sometimes shown as "Breakaway", but it's plainly two words on my vinyl single label) was a much bigger success in the UK than in the USA, where it crept up only as far as 63 on the Billboard Chart.
9. At Number Nine was a Scottish band enjoying their third of eight Top Ten Hits with "Baby Make It Soon". Their biggest hit had come the previous year when they topped the UK charts with a Lennon and McCartney number which the Beatles did not release as a single in the UK. Name the band.

Answer: Marmalade

That big Beatles-penned hit was "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". I bumped into Patrick Fairley, one of the original members of Marmalade, in Los Angeles a few years ago, when I visited his bar, the Scotland Yard Pub, in the San Fernando Valley.
10. At Number Ten, having peaked at Number Eight, was "Proud Mary", the first UK hit for which band, who, although they came from the San Francisco Bay, sang mainly about life on the Mississippi and the bayous?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Often known as CCR, the band included Tom Fogerty and his brother John, who went on to have significant solo success, with his 1985 album "Centerfield" topping the Billboard charts.
