Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1960 saw Ray Charles reach number one singing about his favorite state. What state?

Answer: Georgia

"Georgia On My Mind" was written way back in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael. The song has been covered by many, many artists but the most well known version was recorded by Ray Charles and the song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for one week in the fall of 1960. Rolling Stone Magazine listed the song at number 44 on their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and the song was named as the official state song of Georgia in 1979.
2. Ray Charles again. Who was it that hit the road in 1961?

Answer: Jack

"Hit the Road Jack" was written by Percy Mayfield who wrote may hits during the 1950s. Ray Charles took this composition and turned it into a number one hit, the sixth of his career, spending two weeks in the top slot on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1961. He also shows up again on the Rolling Stone Magazine list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 377.
3. The original Jersey Boys, The Four Seasons exploded onto the charts in 1962 with the first of their many number ones. Can you name it?

Answer: Sherry

Of course it was "Sherry' written by Bob Gaudio, one of the original members, which propelled the Frankie Valli and the group to stardom in 1962. The group was unsuccessful for the most part as the Four Lovers, the name they had used prior to changing it in 1961. "Sherry" sealed the deal for the group shooting to the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and remaining there for five weeks in the fall of 1962.

Interestingly, according to Gaudio, he originally wrote the song and titled it "Jackie Baby" in honor of then U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

The name was eventually changed to "Sherry Baby" and eventually the Baby portion was dropped from the title.
4. This 1960s pop singer had the biggest selling version of "Blue Velvet" in the U.S. when it went to number one in 1963. Who was the singer?

Answer: Bobby Vinton

Tony Bennett had a version of this song back in 1951 and peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Pop Singles charts, but Vinton's version was a U.S. number one hit (Billboard Hot 100) for three weeks in the fall of 1963. Interestingly, when the song was released that year, it didn't make the British charts.

It was re-released in 1990 and inexplicably made it to number two in the U.K. 27 years after being originally released.
5. "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" was a number one hit in the U.S. in 1964. Which group took it there?

Answer: Manfred Mann

This song was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and originally released in the U.S. by The Exciters with little fanfare. Manfred Mann covered the song during the British Invasion of 1964 and took the song to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for a two week stay in the fall that year as well as a stint at number one in the U.K.
6. Another British Invasion band, Herman's Hermits had a big year in 1965. They had a song called "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" which went to number one. They had another song that found the top spot in the U.S. that year. With what other song did they become kings that year?

Answer: I'm Henry VIII I Am

"I'm Henry VIII I Am" was actually a 1910 British music hall tune which was revived by Herman's Hermits in 1965 and the song caught on with both British and American audiences. The song became the group's second number one hit that year spending a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts.
7. 1966 saw this hot hit reach the top of the charts. What group was it that gave us "Summer in The City?

Answer: The Lovin' Spoonful

"Summer In The City" was the 1966 smash that The Lovin' Spoonful took to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for a three week stay in August (ironic) that year. The song was penned by Mark Sebastian, the brother of lead singer John Sebastian. The classic sounds of a jackhammer and the horn of a Volkswagen Beetle are interspersed throughout to give the song a little more flavor.

The song is listed on Billboard Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 393.
8. The psychedelic tune "Incense and Peppermints" was a breakthrough tune for this U.S. West Coast group. Pick the correct one.

Answer: Strawberry Alarm Clock

The Strawberry Alarm Clock was a psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles California who had their biggest hit with "Incense and Peppermints" when the song reached number one for a one week stay in the fall of 1967. Although considered a psychedelic band, they were at the forefront of the 'bubble gum' genre which hit the U.S. in late 1967 and 1968.
9. "Sunshine Superman", a 1966 number one hit by Donovan, mentions a comic book character besides Superman in the lyrics of the song. Who?

Answer: Green Lantern

"Superman or Green Lantern ain't got nothing on me...", so go the lyrics. This song was a number one hit in the U.S during September of 1966 for one week. It also reached number two in the U.K. when released there later in the year. It is generally considered to be one of the first forms of psychedelic music.

A little known fact about this recording is that one of the guitar players on the track was Jimmy Page.
10. This song soared to the top of the charts for Peter, Paul and Mary in 1969. What song was it?

Answer: Leaving On A Jet Plane

"Leaving on A Jet Plane" was a tune penned by the late John Denver in 1967. He had originally titled the song "Oh, Babe I Hate to Go" but changed the title before recording it in 1967. It was also recorded by the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Spanky and Our Gang, but the most well known version is that of Peter, Paul and Mary in 1969, a version that made it to the top of the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts for one week in December 1969. Ironically, with all their success, this was their only number one hit.
