Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hold Me Tight"

Answer: The Beatles

"Roll Over Beethoven" backed with "Hold Me Tight" was a double sided number one in Australia. "Hold Me Tight" was not released as a single in the USA or UK. "Roll Over Beethoven" backed with "Please Mr Postman" was released in the USA and climbed to 68 on the Billboard Hot 100.
2. "It's Over"

Answer: Roy Orbison

Backed with "Indian Wedding", "It's Over" was another number one for Roy Orbison in the UK. The record made the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number nine. In Australia the record got to number eleven and was still on the top forty when the follow up, "Oh Pretty Woman" made the charts.
3. "When You Walk In The Room"

Answer: The Searchers

"When You Walk In The Room" was written and originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon. The Searchers from Liverpool worked up an arrangement similar to Jackie DeShannon's and enlivening Tommy Tedesco's lead guitar riff. The song struck a chord (pardon the pun) and the record went to number one in Australia and number three in the UK. In the USA it only reached number thirty five on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. "My Boy Lollipop"

Answer: Little Millie

Millie, Little Millie, Millie Small or Little Millie Small were all names used by the record companies to market "My Boy Lollipop", a number one hit in the UK in 1964. The record made number two in Australia and number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Millie followed with some singles in the reggae style: "Sweet William", "Bloodshot Eyes" to name a couple but none ever achieved top thirty status anywhere.
5. "Diane"

Answer: The Bachelors

Originally written in the 1920s by drummer/bandleader Ben Pollack, "Diane" has been recorded over the years by many artists. In 1964 the Irish trio The Bachelors released a harmonious version of the song which climbed the charts very quickly. The Bachelors' record of "Diane" went to the top of the UK chart stalled at number four on the Australian chart behind three Beatles records. In the US the record made the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. The Bachelors remained popular throughout the sixties then hit the cabaret circuit.
6. "Requests (EP)"

Answer: The Beatles

Released in the UK as "Long Tall Sally", this EP released in Australia as "'Requests' by The Beatles" featured "Long Tall Sally" / "Boys" / "I Call Your Name" /"Slow Down". Only "I Call Your Name" was a Beatles original and had only been issued as an album track.

The song was written for fellow Liverpudlian Billy J Kramer who released it as the B side of his hit "Bad To Me" also written by Lennon/McCartney. The other three songs on the EP were "Slow Down", written by and a hit for Larry Williams, "Boys" originally recorded by the Shirelles as the flipside to their hit "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", and finally probably the best version of Little Richard's classic, "Long Tall Sally".
7. "Louie Louie"

Answer: The Kingsmen

"Louie Louie" was written by Richard Berry and recorded by him with the Pharaohs in 1957. In 1963 the best known version of the song was recorded by the Kingsmen from Portland Oregon. Released in 1964 the record went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Cashbox. Although the record did not chart with significance in Australia or the UK many aspiring rock groups had "Louie Louie" in their repertoire.
8. "We'll Sing in the Sunshine"

Answer: Gale Garnett

-New Zealand born Gale Garnett hit the charts with the song she wrote, "We'll Sing in the Sunshine". "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" rose to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Cashbox chart. In Australia the song peaked at number five behind the Supremes and the Beatles, in the UK the song did not chart for Gale Garnett, though a cover version by a group the Lancastrians hovered around the top sixty for a few weeks in late 1964.
9. "She's Not There"

Answer: The Zombies

The Zombies from Hertfordshire in the UK achieved a number one with their first release "She's Not There". The record hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed for two weeks then moved up a notch to position two; on the Cashbox chart the record went up to number one. In Australia the record made the top ten peaking at number five and in the UK the record only made number twelve. In 1977 Santana had a hit with revival of the song, which charted higher in the UK than the original.
