Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jimmy Page is best known as the lead guitarist in the classic rock band Led Zeppelin. Do you know which band he was never a regular member of?

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks featured Dave Davies on lead guitar, not Jimmy Page.
Page was in The Firm with Paul Rodgers, of Bad Company, fame.
The Yardbirds has the distinction of having had three incredible guitarists over the course of the band's duration: Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.
The Primitives were an Oxford, England based group that lasted only two short years. The group is forever linked to Jimmy Page after he replaced the band's original guitarist, Geoff Eaton.
2. Ask nearly any established guitarist to list their influences and one name will appear on nearly every list, Eric Clapton. In addition to a stellar solo career, Clapton has appeared in numerous bands, except which one?

Answer: The Animals

If Clapton were asked to list his influences, he would include: Albert King, J.J. Cale, Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970 and released the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" in November of 1970 which featured yet another highly influential guitarist in Duane Allman.
Blind Faith was only together for seven months, from May to November of 1969. Cream made it a little longer, three years to be exact, from 1966 until 1969.
3. Born in 1945 in Weston-Super-Mare, Avon, England, Ritchie Blackmore found success as a studio musician before co-founding one of the most successful hard rock bands to come out of Hertford, England. Which of the following groups did Blackmore not lend his guitar skills to?

Answer: Iron Butterfly

Deep Purple was formed in Hertford in 1968 and was originally dubbed Roundabout. Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1975 and took over guitar duties in the band Elf, before renaming the group Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. The Lancasters were a group comprised mainly of studio musicians assembled by producer Derek Lawrence.

Other than Blackmore, The Lancasters started the career of keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, who found success in Quicksilver Messenger Service from 1965 until the band's break-up in 1973.
4. Ian Gillan has provided vocals to a virtual all star line-up of musicians. Born in Middlesex, England in 1945, Gillan began his musical career with The Javelins. Of the bands listed, which has he never assumed lead vocals duties for?

Answer: Steppenwolf

After Gillan left The Javelins, he met up with bass player Roger Glover to join Episode Six. After a four year stint with Episode Six, both Glover and Gillan were invited to join Deep Purple. Gillan enjoyed his success with Deep Purple, providing vocals for the group's biggest hit, "Smoke on the Water". Gillan joined Black Sabbath in 1983 and recorded the album "Born Again", but Deep Purple convinced him to rejoin the group in 1984.

The restored Deep Purple released the album "Perfect Strangers" featuring Gillan on vocals.

The album peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard 200 album charts.
5. Jason Newsted's resume includes playing bass on some of the hardest hitting bands in heavy metal. Born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1963, Newsted has played with the following bands, except which one?

Answer: Exodus

Newsted was never in Exodus, but fellow Metallica-mate Kirk Hammett was. He was in Flotsam & Jetsam from 1983 until Cliff Burton was tragically killed in a bus accident. When Metallica offered him the chance to audition, he left Flotsam & Jetsam in an attempt to take over the bass in his favorite band. Newsted stayed with Metallica from 1986 until early 2001 when he suddenly announced his departure from the band.
Newsted played on the Voivod album "Phobos" in 1997. He has also played on the Sepultura album "Against" and was in the group Echo Brain in 2000.
6. Paul Rodgers has one of the most distinct and pure rock voices in history, which probably explains his high demand. Which band has he never played with?

Answer: Ten Years After

Ten Years after featured Alvin Lee on vocal and guitar, not Rodgers. Rodgers was, however, in the group Free from 1968 to 1973. Most would agree that Rodgers premier work was performed while as a member of Bad Company. The band had an incredible line-up with Rodgers on vocals, Simon Kirke on drums (both had been in Free together), Boz Burrell on bass (previously of King Crimson) and Mick Ralphs on guitar (who had been with Mott the Hoople).

The band released their self-titled debut album in 1974, the very first group to be released on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label. Rodgers later formed the group The Firm with Jimmy Page and released the albums "The Firm" (1985) and "Mean Business" (1986).
7. Joe Lynn Turner has been lead vocalist in many hard rock bands over the years. Which band never included him as a member?

Answer: Whitesnake

David Coverdale provided lead vocals for Whitesnake.
Joe Lynn Turner started his career as lead songer for Fandango. He released four ablums with this group from 1977 to 1980. This exposure gave him the opportunity to be the man to repalce Graham Bonnet in Rainbow. Turner was vocalist on the hits "Stone COld" and "I Surrender". After Rainbow's break-up in 1984, Turner sang on numerous albums with multiple artists including Yngwie Malmsteen and Heaven. In 1990, he joined a reformed Deep Purple for the "Slaves and Masters" album.
8. Which band never featured drummer Bill Bruford?

Answer: Marillion

Bruford started his career in the late 1960's with the progressive rock band Yes. He spent a short time as the drummer for Gong in the 1970's and then spent roughly a quarter of a century in the group King Crimson. I recommend listening to his drumwork in the jazz group Earthworks.

His unique drumming style and mastery of complex time signatures makes for some very technically oriented jazz compositions.
9. "Bridge of Sighs" composer, Robin Trower, is best known as a solo artist releasing over twenty albums in his long career. He has been in a few bands over the years though except which one?

Answer: Manfred Mann

Basically, all three bands: The Paramounts, Procul Harum and Liquorice John Death and The All Stars were the same band, with the name changes occurring with the departure and addition of band members. Members Robin Trower, B.J. Wislon, Gary Brooker and Chris Copping are the only perosnnel who are common to all three bands.
10. Jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth has played as both a solo artist and as a band member along side some of the most gifted musicians on the planet. Which band has he never played with?

Answer: Return to Forever

Both Bill Connors and Al DiMeola are recognized for their work with Return to Forever.
Holdsworth joined the group Tempest in 1972 and appeared on the band's debut album. The band UK was a supergroup assembled by members of Yes, King Crimson, Roxy Music and Soft Machine. Holdsworth only appeared on one album with the group, the band's self titled debut in 1978. Holdsworth also played in one of th eincarnations of The Soft Machine in the late 1970's. In addition to these groups, Holdsworth also played with Gong, Level 42 and Soft Works.
