Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Beatles' first American tour in 1964 was a music and cultural phenomenon. Which famous New York City DJ was known as the self-proclaimed "Fifth Beatle"?

Answer: Murray The K

New York City DJ Murray Kaufman, known to his legions of loyal listeners as "Murray the K," became a good friend of the Beatles during their first American tour. Their friendship prompted jealous feelings among many of Murray's colleagues who had to settle for less intimate interviews with the Fab Four.
2. To which classic comedy act did John Lennon once compare the American sixties TV band, The Monkees?

Answer: The Marx Brothers

During a visit to England, the Monkees attended a party where Micky Dolenz struck up a conversation with his idol, John Lennon. According to Dolenz, Mr. Lennon claimed to be a fan of the Monkees and proclaimed them a modern-day version of the Marx Brothers.
3. The seventies vocal trio, Crosby, Stills, and Nash were one of rock music's first "super groups." Which three sixties bands did the trio's members originally come from?

Answer: The Byrds, The Hollies, Buffalo Springfield

David Crosby was a former member of The Byrds, Graham Nash once sang with the British band, The Hollies, and Stephen Stills was the vocalist on Buffalo Springfield's classic hit, "For What It's Worth." Later, of course, another Buffalo Springfield alumnus, Neil Young joined the trio and they briefly became "Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young."
4. Cher can be heard as a session background vocalist on some early sixties recordings produced by the legendary Phil Spector.

Answer: True

According to Ronnie Spector, Phil's former wife and lead singer of the Ronettes, Cher was always hanging around the studio because her boyfriend, Sonny worked there. Occasionally, Phil would ask her to sing back-up for other artists. Ronnie claims that if one listens closely Cher can be heard singing back-up on "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers.
5. Which of the following legendary musician passed away first?

Answer: Otis Redding

Otis Redding died in a plane crash in 1967, shortly before his recording of "Dock Of The Bay" became his biggest hit and a classic track for all time. Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, as did Janis Joplin a few months later. Led Zepplin drummer John Bonham passed away in the early 1980s from alcohol poisoning.
6. Which sixties pop duo appeared on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" in 1964, playing characters based on themselves?

Answer: Chad and Jeremy

1964 was the first year of the music era known as the "British Music Invasion", and it was only fitting that a savvy show like "DVD" would acknowledge such by writing a show around two British pop singers touring the States. Chad and Jeremy may not have been great actors, but they were convincing as a fictionalized version of themselves hiding out from their rabid American fans in the Petries' suburban New Rochelle residence.
7. What was the name of the vocal quartet in which the three members of the Supremes first sang together?

Answer: The Primettes

Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard were teen-agers when they first sang together in the Detriot-based quartet, The Primettes. Later, when forming their trio, the girls reportedly had a difficult time deciding on a name until group founder Florence Ballard came up with "The Supremes.". Sadly, despite her "supreme" love for the band which she founded and named, the talented Ms Ballard was eventually forced by producer Barry Gordy to hand over lead singing duties to Diana Ross, with whose name "The Supremes" later became synonymous.
8. Linda Ronstadt, famed seventies vocalist, had her only sixties hit with the song "Different Drum" which she recorded with her band, The Stone Ponies. Which sixties actor/singer wrote the song?

Answer: Mike Nesmith

Mike Nesmith was known as "Wool Hat" prior to signing on with the Monkees, and he of course has since gone on to produce movies and make more music.
9. On which sixties TV show did Keith Moon's drum kit famously explode during an appearance by The Who?

Answer: The Smothers Brothers Show

It happened on a second season episode of Dick and Tommy Smothers' classic (and some might claim politically subversive) TV variety show. Unknown to anyone but the stage hands and Who bassist, John Entwhistle, Moon rigged his drum kit to explode at the end of the band's lip-synched performance of "My Generation." Moon ended up going to see a doctor afterwards, the victim of multiple splinters from the exploding wood that had formed part of his drums.
10. Which member of The Mamas And The Papas was briefly fired from the band as punishment for having an affair with another member of the quartet?

Answer: Michelle Philips

It's a script straight out of a rock and roll soap opera: Cass loved Denny who loved Michelle who was supposed to love John. After Michelle and Denny's secret romance was discovered by the other two, it was Michelle who bore the brunt of their ire. When the group went off to tour Europe a few months later, Michelle was left behind, and not allowed to sing with them again until she promised to remain faithful to her husband John.

Her promise kept the band together only long enough for them to put out another album.

She and John divorced not long afterward.
