Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sings lead vocals on the song "Sara"?

Answer: Stevie Nicks

Lindsey Buckingham supplies guitar and backing vocals, while Christine McVie supplies piano and backing vocals. According to Songfacts.com, Nicks originally wrote the song on piano, and Mick Fleetwood had a hard time putting the drum track together.
2. "Sara" was released as a single from what 1979 Fleetwood Mac album?

Answer: Tusk

"Crime of the Century" is a Supertramp album. Fleetwood Mac's album "Fleetwood Mac" was released in 1975 and "Tango in the Night" didn't come out until 1987. "Tusk," a double album, was the band's twelfth studio album and was released on October 12, 1979.
3. "There is a ____, no it never really died." What word is missing from this line of "Sara"?

Answer: heartbeat

This line is to be found in the concluding stanza of the song:

"All I ever wanted
Was to know that you were dreaming
There is a heartbeat, no it never really died
You never really die (oh, Sara)
Oh will you swallow your pride?
Could you speak a little louder?
And the wait began (oh, Sara)
Oh, crazy
There is a heartbeat and it never really died."

The vinyl album "Tusk" featured an unedited, over-six-minute version of "Sara," while an edited, single version was released on the CD in 1987. That edited version left out the bridge and middle verse. The unedited version, however, was later included on the 1998 CD release of the "Greatest Hits" compilation.
4. What Eagles' frontman has said he thinks "Sara" is about the child Stevie Nicks conceived with him and then aborted?

Answer: Don Henley

In 1991, Don Henley told GQ magazine that he believed Stevie Nicks "became pregnant by me. And she named the kid Sara, and she had an abortion - and then wrote the song of the same name to the spirit of the aborted baby."

Stevie Nicks partially confirmed his interpretation of the song, telling Billboard magazine that had she gotten married to Don Henley and had the baby, she would have named it Sara. "It's accurate," Nicks told Billboard, "but not the entirety of it."
5. "Wait a minute baby / Stay with me awhile / Said you'd give me ____ / But you never told me about the fire." What word is missing from these lines of "Sara"?

Answer: light

"Sara" peaked at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it maintained its position for three weeks. It made the Top 40 on the singles charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium.
6. In what sea is the singer "drowning" in "Sara"?

Answer: The sea of love

The second stanza of the song runs:

"Drownin' in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
Now it's gone, they say it doesn't matter what for
When you build your house, then call me."

"Sara" was released as a single on December 5, 1979. It had the song "That's Enough for Me" on the B-Side.
7. "It was just like a great dark ___ / Within the wings of a storm." A great dark what?

Answer: wing

In these lines, the songwriter uses alliteration, which is the repetition of beginning consonant sounds, with "wing" "within" and "wings." She also uses a simile and some stark imagery.

In March of 2004, a nine-minute version of "Sara" was released on the two-CD remastered version of "Tusk." It contained an extended repeating musical section that includes such phrases as "swallow all your pride, don't you ever change-never change" and "no sorrow for sorrow, you can have no more."
8. What is Sara in the singer's heart?

Answer: the poet

"Sara, you're the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop"
Now it's gone, they say it doesn't matter what for
When you build your house, then call me."

According to Songfacts.com, when Stevie Nicks checked into the Betty Ford Clinic to deal with her cocaine addiction in 1986, she used the name Sara. Her song about the experience, "Welcome To The Room, Sara," was recorded on "Tango In The Night."
9. "Hold on, the night is comin' / And the ____ flew for days and days." What flew?

Answer: starling

A starling is a small bird with a strong and direct flight. Starlings are gregarious birds that chirp a lot, and they live in the open country.

This verse continues:

"I'd stay home at night all the time
Well I would go anywhere, anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I will be there
You just ask me and I will be there, 'cause I care."
10. Stevie Nicks was sued for plagiarism for the song "Sara."

Answer: true

In 1980, Carol L. Hinton brought a suit against Nicks, claiming to have sent to Warner Brothers a poem in November of 1978 that bore a strong resemblance to "Sara." The poem shared the same name and had some similar lines. Nicks argued that though the works were indeed similar, they had been separately inspired, and in her defense submitted the demo of the song she had recorded in July of 1978 in Dallas, before the poem was sent to Warner Brothers.

The case was ultimately settled out of court.
