Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Limit had a UK hit with "Say Yeah" in early 1985. What was its highest chart position?

Answer: 17

"Say Yeah" peaked at Number 17 in the UK charts, crossing over from the dance charts into the mainstream, resulting in them appearing on Top of the Pops.
2. The Limit were a European band but where were they from?

Answer: The Netherlands

Rob van Schaik and Bernard Oattes were from The Netherlands. They followed two other famous Dutch bands who had UK hits, notably Golden Earring and Focus.
3. The Limit wrote songs for which other 1980s UK group?

Answer: Five Star

Oattes and van Schaik penned "Love Take Over" for Five Star, a UK group in the style of The Jackson 5. It was the opening track on Five Star's debut album "Luxury of Life" and also released as a single, reaching No. 25 in the UK charts.
4. The female backing vocals on "Say Yeah" were performed by which artist?

Answer: Gwen Guthrie

Gwen Guthrie was the original backing vocalist on this hit. She also sang backing vocals for Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Billy Joel among many others. Clare Torry performed the now-classic wordless vocals on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". P P Arnold and Ruby Turner have both had long solo careers as well as working with major artists - you can see P P Arnold on You Tube as backing vocalist for "Tin Soldier" by the The Small Faces.
5. The Limit appeared on the UK's "Top of the Pops" to promote "Say Yeah". What was the Number One song from that show in January 1985?

Answer: "I Want to Know What Love is" - Foreigner

It was the Foreigner classic - "I Want To Know What Love Is". The others were all around the same time but this song ousted Band Aid from the number one spot on 19 January 1985.
6. Who played keyboards for The Limit on their "Top of the Pops: appearance in 1985?

Answer: Bernard Oattes

It was Bernard Oattes. Kees Ten Dam was the sax player and Rob van Schaik fronted the band (but you could still see the side).
7. What was the follow-up hit for The Limit?

Answer: There wasn't one

There wasn't one. "Photomania" was a previous single from a few years earlier whilst "Go!" and "Love Knows The Way" are both from Bernard's solo album "Frame By Frame"
8. Which of the following correctly completes the song lyric for "Say Yeah"? Baby, looking at you...

Answer: It takes me back in time

The correct answer is "it takes me back in time". The others are good tries but not correct.

"Baby, lookin' at you
It takes me back in time
Lately I've been dreaming
You've been on my mind
I can still see
You beside me

You ask me: "Do I love you?"
I couldn't help it if I tried
Love was so unfair
We had to row against the tide

Partners in crime
Way down the line"
9. The Limit also wrote a song that was released as a single by?

Answer: Jan Akkerman

The song was "She's So Divine" which was released as a single by Jan Akkerman, the former Focus guitarist. As far as I know, there isn't anybody nobody named Jimmy Normal.
10. One of the members went on to produce solo albums. Which of the following did not feature in any of his albums?

Answer: Geoff Nelson

Bernard Oattes went on to make solo albums. Geoff Nelson did not play on any of the solo albums as he was my college tutor. The others all played on Soul Detective - Jan Akkerman was of course the superb lead guitarist from Focus, Peter White was a long-time collaborator with Al Stewart of "Year of the Cat fame" and Richard Elliott played saxophone.
