Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1962 this group had "A Wonderful Dream" that their record made the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It did. Then they woke up and never made the Top 40 again. Who were they?

Answer: The Majors

This Philadelphia quintet almost made the Top 20... but topped out at Number 22. This bouncy "feel good" song featured a falsetto lead vocal by Ricky Cordo. Just two weeks after this entered the charts another falsetto-led group, The Four Seasons, began their climb with the Number One hit "Sherry". They lasted much longer.
2. In 1964 this "British Invasion" group scored their only Top 40 hit with the John D. Loudermilk penned "Tobacco Road". Who were they?

Answer: The Nashville Teens

The group was formed in Surrey, England in 1962; the group's co-founders, Ramon Philips and Arthur Sharp were both past their teens. They also have no actual connection to Nashville; the group's name evolved from an Everly Brothers song "Nashville Blues".
3. Ray Conniff, with his orchestra and chorus, sold millions of LPs. In 1966 he had his only single to make the Top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. What was it?

Answer: Somewhere, My Love

Ray's world-wide hit of "Somewhere My Love" reached Number Nine on the Billboard charts and earned him a 1967 Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Chorus. The tune was woven throughout the film "Doctor Zhivago" and was known as "Lara's Theme".
4. In 1978 "MacArthur Park" was Donna Summer's first Number One hit record. The song was also, however, a Top Ten hit ten years prior. Who was the unlikely singer of the earlier version?

Answer: Richard Harris

Harris' dramatic version of this song, over seven minutes long, was the longest single to ever make the Top Ten. It's been recorded numerous times by singers as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell and The Four Tops. As great as Harris' performance was... would anyone remember this song if it wasn't for that stupid cake?
5. In 1960 three different one-hit-wonders had a Top 40 hit (on the Billboard Hot 100 chart) with a song from the film "Circus Of Horrors." What was the song?

Answer: Look For A Star

Gary Miles, Garry Mills, and Dean Hawley each had a Top 40 hit with the same song. Garry Miles reached number 16 on the Billboard charts; the other two fellows made it to the mid 20s. They were never heard from again. The song had nothing to do with the film's story line.
6. In 1968 The Status Quo had their first hit record; it was also their only song to make the U.S. Top 40 (on the Billboard Hot 100 chart). What was this psychedelic classic?

Answer: Pictures Of Matchstick Men

The UK lads had only one U.S. hit... but had 20 Top 40 hits in their native England. In 1984 they announced their retirement... but bowed to public demand and kept going.
7. What veteran performer did actress Grace Kelly team up with in 1956 for her only song to make the Top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart?

Answer: Bing Crosby

The song was "True Love" and was from the film "High Society." It reached Number Three and remained on the charts for an impressive 31 weeks. It was the last time Bing made the Top Ten... alone or with a partner.
8. In early 1958, Pat Boone's brother had a minor hit with his recording of "At The Hop." What name was he going by?

Answer: Nick Todd

Nick's tepid version of the song could not compete with the Danny and the Juniors' smash hit. While Danny (Danny Rapp) spent seven weeks at number one, Nick's version only reached number 21 and was gone in six weeks. It was Nick's only Top 40 hit. Bill Skowron was a major league baseball player; he had lots of hits... including eight World Series home runs.
9. Before he hit the charts in 1965 with his Number One song, "Eve Of Destruction," Barry McGuire was a member of what musical ensemble?

Answer: New Christy Minstrels

Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes and Gene Clark were also members of The New Christy Minstrels at some point in their careers. An "answer song" to the McGuire hit, "Dawn of Correction" by The Spokesmen, peaked at Number 36. The Spokesmen were also one-hit-wonders.
10. Instrumentals seemed to be more popular "back in the day". The Village Stompers almost made it to the top in late 1963 with what Dixieland Jazz flavored hit?

Answer: Washington Square

Catchy tune. The New York City octet had a few other songs make the lower end of the Billboard Hot 100... but by then "The British Invasion" had rolled in and everything else was out.
