quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Nobody rules these streets at night but me, the ____________' Fill in the lyric.

Answer: Atomic Punk

Off of the first VH album. Interesting 'shushing' sound made by scraping guitar pick on the strings; might be a phase shift added too.
2. 'If you let me cool you one time, you'll be my regular stop.' What's the song title?

Answer: ice cream man

At the end, 'All my flavors are guaranteeeeeeeeeed to satis-fa-fy.'
3. 'She said, 'Gimme, gimme a call sometime,' but she knows what that'll get her.' What's the song title?

Answer: Jamie's Crying

Off of their first album. Classic story. She's looking for love, he's looking for....well, you know.
4. 'I heard you missed us, we're back. I brought my pencil.' What's the song title?

Answer: Hot for Teacher

Off of '1984'. This is actually a spoken part after the guitar solo. Cool video shows how the guys might have looked in school!Didn't we all know someone like Dave in school? Ok, so no one is REALLY like Dave!
5. 'I want the good life, with all the best. But I like that bottle, better than the rest. And she said,'I think that you're heading for a whole lotta trouble, if you __________.' What's the lyric?

Answer: take your whiskey home

Also the title of the song. Some nice acoustic guitar work in the intro of this lesser-known, but very cool, tune off of 'Women and Children First.'
6. 'I'm searching for the latest thing, some break in this routine. I'm talkin' some new kicks, some like you ain't never seen.' What's the song title?

Answer: Mean Street

'Changed you from hunted into hunter, gonna hunt somebody down. And someone said 'Fair Warning', Lord strike that poor boy down!'
7. 'Ain't got no money, got no house on the hill. Tell me honey can your lovin pay my bills, yeah.' What's the song title?

Answer: Hear About It Later

'I want a run for my money, that's all!' From 'Fair Warning.' I saw a clip of them doing this live and Mike and Ed did these cool jumps toward the mics just in time to sing their backup lines.
8. 'I've been to the edge, and there I stood and looked down. You know I lost a lot of friends there, baby. Ain't got no time to mess around.' These are lyrics to what VH song?

Answer: Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

'My love is rotten to the core!' Off of VH I. The intro guitar licks were a cool milestone when I learned to play it years ago.
9. 'Got a drink in my hand, got my toes in the sand, and all I n-n-need is the woman.' What's the song title?

Answer: Beautiful Girls

'I love 'em, I need 'em. Can't do without 'em, no!' Fun summertime song off of VH II.
10. VH has a tune titled 'D.O.A.' What do the initials stand for in *this* song?

Answer: Dead or Alive

'They sent the mayor down is his pickup truck. The jury looked at me, said, 'outta luck!' ' Off of VH II.
11. 'Big Bad Bill (is Sweet William Now)' is a song off the 'Diver Down' album. What instrument solos throughout the song?

Answer: clarinet

Played by Jan Van Halen, the guys' father. A very odd tune for VH, but then again, that album has several unusual song choices.
12. Also off of the 'Diver Down' album: 'Dancing in the Street' was a song originally made popular in the 60s by The Supremes. T or F?

Answer: False

It was Martha and the Vandellas! I thought VH did a nice job making this song their own. The original version of this tune came out around the time when Martin Luther King was assasinated. According to an interview with Martha, some black people mistakenly took the song as a rallying cry to riot in the streets.
13. 'Well, the kid is into losin' sleep And he don't come home for half the week You know it's more than just an aggravation.' From which song?

Answer: And the Cradle Will Rock

'Have you seen junior's grades?' Off of 'Women and Children First.' The first VH tune released with Ed playing keyboards, though the way they're processed, it's not real obvious that they're keyboards.
14. What's the name of the song off of the second VH album that consists of no other instruments, only Eddie playing the guitar?

Answer: Spanish Fly

Nice acoustic solo. 'Eruption' was off the FIRST VH album. Many of you probably fell for that one.
15. On the first VH album, the guys redid a song originally made popular by a 60s 'British Invasion' band. What was the name of that band?

Answer: The Kinks

What a powerful version! 'You Really Got Me' flowed nicely from 'Eruption' on the album.
16. Name the song off of '1984' that became the band's first number 1 hit single ever.

Answer: Jump

The song was recorded on an Oberheim keyboard and really introduced the world to Van Halen's keyboard-based songwriting. Unbenownst to many, though, Eddie first played keys much earlier on 'And the Cradle Will Rock.' Dave was never crazy about Eddie playing keys - 'You're a GUITAR god, man.'
17. Which tune off of '1984' was written many years ealier and appeared on one of the band's very first demo tapes?

Answer: House of Pain

Great tune. An early version of 'House of Pain', along with 'Runnin with the Devil', was on the demo produced by Kiss' Gene Simmons.
18. 'You can't get romantic on a subway line. Conductor don't like it, says, "You're wastin' your time." ' What VH tune is the lyric from?

Answer: Everybody Wants Some

'I love the way the line runs up the back of the stocking. I've always liked those kinda high heels too.' Spoken by Dave in the middle of this fun tune. If you've listened to this tune closely, it sounds like Dave distorts several of the words. Dave notes in his book, 'Crazy from the Heat', that he sometimes liked to make sounds that just seem to fit the music.
19. What's the title of the Roy Orbison tune VH redid?

Answer: Pretty Woman

Another good remake. When the VIDEO for this song was shot, it exceeded the length of the song. VH recorded 'Intruder' as an intro to fill the time. Also, Dave and Eddie were feuding while recording this album, causing neither to realize that they cut the bridge shorter than the original version until later; they then decided to leave it the way they recorded it.
VH version:
"Cause I need you, need you tonight."
Roy Orbison version:
"Cause I need you, I'll treat you right
Come with me baby, be mine tonight."
20. Which VH album contains the songs 'Sinner's Swing', 'So This Is Love?', 'Sunday Afternoon In the Park', and 'One Foot Out the Door'?

Answer: Fair Warning

Though most VH albums kick butt, this one is very underrated. If you're a Diamond Dave fan, read his book, 'Crazy from the Heat.' It contains a bunch of short passages about memories with the band, his philosophies, his third world excursions, growing up, and more. I found it very entertaining and interesting. If you think Dave's just another dumb blond rock star, the book will surprise you. Click on SEND A COMPLIMENT below, I'd love to get your feedback.
