Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were the most famous couple of Mexican art, but were they ever married?

Answer: Yes

Rivera and Kahlo were married in 1929, only four years after Kahlo was involved in a life-threatening bus accident. Kahlo said later that, 'I suffered two grave accidents in my life. One in which a street car knocked me down...the other accident was Diego.' Their relationship was a roller coaster, to say the least...
2. She married Jackson Pollock and virtually managed his affairs, what was her name?

Answer: Krasner

Lee Krasner spent her artistic career in relative obscurity, faithfully promoting the work of her husband Jack 'the dripper' Pollock. These days Krasner's work is recognized on its own as having played a significant part in the growth of the American Abstract Expressionist movement.
3. Camille Claudel was lover and artistic partner to which famous French artist of the late 19th - early 20th century?

Answer: Rodin

Claudel entered Rodin's studio in 1884 as a pupil and soon became his mistress. Their sculpture work was mutually inspirational but their love affair did not last, having broken off by the end of the century. I don't think either of them ever fully recovered from this break...
4. Helen Frankenthaler was married to which prominent American artist from 1958 to 1971?

Answer: Robert Motherwell

Motherwell is most famous for his series 'Elegy to the Spanish Republic' while Frankenthaler is most noted for her work using the 'color field' technique, employing a unique staining technique on canvas.
5. Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz were married from 1924 until his death in 1946. What was Stieglitz's specialty?

Answer: Photography

The most expensive photographic print ever sold at auction was a Stieglitz portrait of his wife O'Keeffe.
6. French painter Robert Delaunay and Russian painter Sonia Terk were married in 1910 in Paris. Later they developed a new art movement that Apollinaire dubbed...?

Answer: Orphism

Apollinaire was alluding to Orpheus, the figure of Greek myth, when he named this movement that lasted only from 1911 until 1914. The movement developed out of Cubism, and eventually melded into Expressionism.
7. Mikhail Larionov was one of the primary innovators within the new Russian avant-garde that began developing in the early 20th century. What was the name of his lifelong partner in this pursuit?

Answer: Goncharova

Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov were never married but spent nearly their entire lives together. They were both born in 1881 and probably met in 1898 when they both entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Larionov outlived Goncharova by only 2 years, he passing away in 1964 while she died in 1962.
8. Another couple who emerged amongst the Russian avant-garde of the early 20th century, Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova, were involved in which art movement?

Answer: Constructivism

Although they helped form the constructivist movement during the early 20th century, they began to move away from it by the 1920s toward what Rodchenko called 'Productivism' - mass production of industrial art.
9. Artist and dancer Sophie Taeuber became which Dada artist's wife in 1922?

Answer: Hans Arp

Arp stated, 'It was Sophie Taeuber who, through the example of her clear work and her clear life, showed me the right way.' Sadly, Taeuber died in 1943 of an accident involving a defective charcoal stove...Arp was shattered, and lived another 23 years without his love.
10. Barbara Hepworth married two artists. Her first husband was sculptor John Skeaping (1925 to 1931) while her second husband was which other British sculptor?

Answer: Ben Nicholson

Both Nicholson and Hepworth created fascinating sculptures, Hepworth's were generally carvings from natural media such as wood and stone while Nicholson's were relief sculptures influenced by Cubism. They were married from 1932 until 1951, when they divorced.
