Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Often called "The Most Beautiful Woman in Films", she was not only an Hollywood star, but also an inventor. Do you know the name of this beauty/genius, born in Vienna as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler?

Answer: Hedy Lamarr

Lamarr began her cinematographic career in Czechoslovakia. The film "Ecstasy" , released in 1933, is notorious for a scene in which Lamarr's face expressions fake an orgasm, and some nude scene of the actress herself.
In America, she starred in "Boom Town" and "Comrade X" with Clark Gable, "Ziegfeld Girl", "Tortilla Flat" and "Her Highness and the Bellboy " among others.
She joined up with pianist and avant-garde composer George Antheil and developed a radio guidance system for torpedoes. The system is ultimately at the origin of the Bluetooth technology. So, if you now can use wireless headphones, it is also thanks to Hedy Lamarr. In 2014 she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Brunettes have genius as well as fun.
2. This dark-haired beauty is fascinating when she dances with Burt Lancaster in Luchino Visconti's "The Leopard", but she can also be very funny, as in "The Pink Panther". Who is she?

Answer: Claudia Cardinale

One of the most beautiful Italian actresses of all time, she was born in Tunis of Sicilian parents: the languages of her young age were Sicilian and French. She started her film career in Tunisia, moving later to Italy where she became a star thanks to films like "Rocco and His Brothers", Fellini's "8 and a Half", Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West".
3. Which dark-haired beauty impersonated many heroines of Brazilian literature, like Dona Flor, Tieta de Agreste and Gabriela, in films mixing doses of fun, romance and tragedy?

Answer: Sonia Braga

Sonia Maria Campos Braga, star of telenovelas like "Dancing Days", is famous outside her country for her performances in "Kiss of the Spider Woman", "Moon Over Parador" and Redford's "The Milagro Beanfield War".
In my opinion, her most enthralling role was as Mastroianni 's love interest in "Gabriela, Cravo e Canela", from the novel by Jorge Amado.
4. This beautiful brunette has a velvet voice and surely she's a "Smooth Operator". Who's this singer, who leaded a band bearing her name?

Answer: Sade Adu

Helen Folasade Adu was born in Nigeria in 1959 but was raised in England. She achieved worldwide success as lead singer of the band Sade in the '80s. The most successful album was "Diamond Life" (1984), followed by "Promise", "Stronger than Pride", "Love Deluxe".
5. Real name: Marina Ann Hantzis. Author of the trilogy of novels "The Juliette Society". But she had a lot of fun in a field other than literature. What's her alias?

Answer: Sasha Grey

If you guessed it right, shame on you (and on me, that goes without saying). Sasha Grey earned much of her fame through a three-year career as porn star, extremely popular online.
After that, she appeared in less risqué movies like Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience", "Open "Window" and HOB's "Entourage". She also co-founded the band aTelecine and writes books. Good luck, Sasha.
6. There's fun in running a country? I don't know, but became Iceland's Prime Minister in 2017. What's her name?

Answer: Katrín Jakobsdóttir

Katrín was born in Reykjavik in 1979; since 2007 she's a member of the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, the oldest Parliament in the world. Her party is the Left-Green Movement.
Being black-haired in a Iceland can be an oddity, being a successful politician for a woman is not:
Vigdìs Finnbogadottir for instance, has been President of the Republic, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was Prime Minister.
Björk Guðmundsdóttir, of course, is a singer.
7. Who was the Israeli singer and actress whose beauty and voice fascinated us for the first time at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, and who sadly left us at 42?

Answer: Ofra Haza

Someone called her "The Israeli Madonna": she was born in Tel Aviv in 1957 as Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza-Ashkenazi. The music that made her famous was an unique mix of eastern and western sounds, with typical middle-eastern drums pounding dance rhythms. It is great, and also a lot of fun if you like to dance. Her most famous song with western audiences was "Im Nin'alu", and thanks to MTV we all could enjoy not only the music, but also Ofra stunning beauty. Later she performed with Paula Abdul and Iggy Pop among others, and sang in many film soundtracks including Dreamworks's "Prince of Egypt" (sung in 18 languages): in this film, the character of Yocheved, that Ofra voiced, was drawn to look like Ofra herself.
8. In which film, does blonde Uma Thurman impersonate brunette Mia Wallace? (Hint: she had a lot of fun dancing with John Travolta).

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Blonde beauty Uma looks great with a black wig in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction", where her character almost dies of overdose and is saved by Travolta with a cardiac injection of adrenaline . She said that Travolta was an idol of her adolescence, and dancing with him was a dream come true.
All other choices are film directed by Tarantino, some with Uma but without black wig.
9. This young chinese girl exists as a cartoon, but a first class one. Who is the main character of the Disney film, released in 1998, that features also the dragon Mushu and a cricket?

Answer: Mulan

I always loved this film and its main character. My daughters have seen it at least 100 times and I'm glad, because I've always considered Mulan a role model for girls. The plot is loosely based on the 6th century Chinese Legend "The Ballad of Mulan". The girl Fa Mulan disguises herself as a man in order to take her old father's place in the draft for the war against the Huns. It is a dramatic story, with very funny moments, and of course a happy ending.
10. "I like to have a martini, Two at the very most. After three I'm under the table, after four I'm under my host." One of funniest brunettes ever wrote that. Who is she?

Answer: Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Rothschild, born in 1893 in New Jersey, was a writer, poet, critic who wrote for "Vogue", "Vanity Fair"; she was book reviewer (as "The Constant Reader") for "The New Yorker" . She was founder and member of the "Algonquin Round Table", an informal circle of intellectuals who met at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan. She's famous for her short stories, her pungent little poems, her screenplays, her witty -often caustic- remarks and her humor that sometimes could be darker than her hair.
