Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many older siblings did the Dionne quintuplets have at the time of their birth?

Answer: five

They had five (living) older siblings: Ernest, Rose Marie, Therese, Daniel, and Pauline. Another baby died in infancy. After the quintuplets, three more boys were born: Oliva Jr., Victor, and Claude.
2. All of the quintuplets were right-handed with the exception of one. Which girl was a lefty?

Answer: Emilie

Emilie was the left-handed one. She was the mirror image of Marie and the two had shared an embryonic sac. It is reported that the two used to seek each other out to play.
3. What were the names of the quintuplets' parents?

Answer: Elzire and Oliva

Elzire was their mother and Oliva was their father. Ernest was the quintuplets' oldest brother. Pauline was one of their sisters.
4. What strange thing happened to the quintuplets mother when she was three months pregnant with them?

Answer: She passed an object about the size of an egg

She had cramps and passed an egg-shaped object. There is no way to know this of course, but many people think that this may have been a sixth child. Annette and Yvonne were in one embryonic sac and Marie and Emilie were in another. It is possible that Cecile's "twin" was miscarried.
5. What did local women donate to the Dionnes in order to help the quintuplets survive?

Answer: breast milk

They donated breast milk to help them survive. Other people donated lots of other things as well. When the girls were first born, they were very small and kept in a wicker basket near the stove in the kitchen with heated blankets to keep them warm.
6. What medical condition contributed to the death of Emilie Dionne at the age of 20?

Answer: epilepsy

She died during an epileptic seizure while sleeping. Sadly, she flipped over on to her stomach and suffocated.
7. Which two people were discouraged from visiting the girls at the hospital?

Answer: their parents

Sadly, their own parents were discouraged from visiting the quintuplets and developing a relationship with them. This discouragement extended to their siblings as well.
8. What did visitors have to do before meeting with the quintuplets face-to-face?

Answer: put on sterile gowns and spray their throats

Everyone who met with the girls had to be germ-free. Their doctor insisted on this. It kept the girls healthy for the nine years that they lived in isolation, but when they left the hospital's sanitary environment, they were exposed to regular germs, and their immune systems were not developed properly. As a result, they got sick a lot.
9. The quintuplets were made to do a lot of chores while living in the hospital.

Answer: False

They were not required to do any chores at all. This resulted in them having few practical skills when they got older.
10. Quintland surpassed Niagara Falls as a tourist destination during the Dionne quintuplets' heyday.

Answer: True

The girls became Canada's largest tourist attraction in the late 1930s, surpassing the revenue generated by Niagara Falls at the time. As infants, they were taken by nurses to the nursery balcony and shown to the crowd one by one, their names penned on a card.

It is rumoured that at times one girl would be shown more than once if one of her sisters wasn't co-operating or was not feeling well.
