Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. They had a feud over a MTV VMA but supposedly made up until the song "Famous" was released. Who are they?

Answer: Kanye West and Taylor Swift

West and Swift had a feud over Kanye's interruption of Taylor Swift's Grammy Award acceptance speech; after that they seemed to have come to terms with each other. But, then Kanye released a song called "Famous" from the "Life of Pablo" album in 2016 which included the lyrics "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous". And now, in this corner wearing yeezy shoes and having a tantrum...
Bette and Kim have had words lately about Kim's nudity and Bette's bedtime.
Drake and Mill fought about the fact that Drake doesn't write his own songs. Aretha was upset that Beyonce called Tina "the queen". All so silly, silly!
2. Which explorers raced to be the first to reach the South Pole?

Answer: Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott

The year was 1910 and Robert Scott wanted to claim the South Pole for Britain, while Amundsen was hoping to plant the Norwegian flag on the bottom of the world; both wishing to become the first man to ever set foot on the southernmost point on the planet.

They had different approaches to this dangerous task. When Scott finally arrived to see the Norwegian flag flying in the wind, he was devastated. Scott never made it back; he and his four companions died of starvation and exposure. Shackleton explored the Antarctic; Hillary climbed Mt. Everest. Galileo and Copernicus searched the stars. Drake and Raleigh were English explorers.
3. One of the most famous celebrity feuds was between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. In what movie did they appear together?

Answer: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

"Dangerous" was a 1935 film for which Bette Davis won an Academy Award. "Mildred Pierce" was a 1945 movie which led to Joan Crawford winning an Oscar.
"Stella Dallas" (1937) had nothing to do with either of them (it was Barbara Stanwyck), but I put this film here in the interest of 'equal time'.
The correct answer is "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" (1962), and two great actresses who already hated each other had to play sisters who hated each other. 'Baby' Jane and Blanche Hudson were stuck in the same mansion and their hatred was almost palpable. They really should have gotten out more often!
4. Both William F. Buckley Jr. and Norman Mailer had a feud with which writer?

Answer: Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal (1925-2012) apparently had a difficult time getting along with some of the other writers of his time. Vidal wrote "Once again words fail Norman Mailer", which didn't sit too well with Mailer who head-butted Vidal in 1971 on national television. Vidal described William F. Buckley "as Hitler without the charm" in one of their explosive TV debates in the late 1960s. Oh, then there was Vidal with Truman Capote; Vidal said about Capote "Capote I truly loathed.

The way you might loathe an animal.

A filthy animal that has found its way into the house". The other choices luckily seem to have escaped the wrath of Gore.
5. She called him a "snake oil salesman", while he countered by calling her a "fat pig". Who were the feuding pair?

Answer: Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell

...Or, as I like to call them, "Rosie O'Donald", although I'm sure "the Donald" would be very upset with second billing! Hmmm, do I see a pattern here? This was a difficult question since there seem to be very few people left on the face of the Earth with whom Mr. Trump has not fought.

But of the choices given, the Trump-O'Donnell feud seemed to be one of the first, and certainly one of the loudest. On TV, Donald called Rosie "a disgusting" animal, "a slob" who "talks like a truck driver", and whose "fat, ugly face" should be fired from "The View". Rosie took the high road by tweeting simply "try explaining that to your kids".
6. Which two psychologists disagreed fundamentally about the nature of 'the unconscious'?

Answer: Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung

Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are both considered founders of the modern psychoanalytic movement. Despite the fact that they had very different approaches to psychology, in truth, the two were very good friends for a long time. Jung felt that Freud's "concept of the unconscious was limited and, instead of being a reservoir of repressed thoughts and motivations", Jung argued that "the unconscious could also be a source of creativity." Skinner and Pavlov were behaviorists. Adler founded the school of individual psychology, while Binet was responsible for IQ tests.
Erikson and Maslow both worked with developmental stages.
7. Who were the rivals in the "Battle of the Sexes" on September 20, 1973?

Answer: Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King

"The Battle of the Sexes" was the title of the three televised matches between a male and female - the first match was between Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court for the best of three sets on May 13, 1973. Riggs beat Court handily. Then their was the "Battle of the Sexes II, i.e., Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.

The year was 1973 and feminism was rearing its well-coiffed head. The place was Houston, Texas; the tension was perceptible. Every woman I knew at the time was tuned in as if this could finally mean equality between the sexes. Then, miraculously, Billie Jean won: 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, and the screams could be heard 'round the world. BTW, Navratilova lost to Connors in part III.
8. In what type of contest would you find the rivals Joey Chestnut and Takaru Kobayashi?

Answer: competitive eating

The field of battle was Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York; the contest: who could win the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. It all started back in 2007 when Joey Chestnut won his first title, beating the six-time champ Takaru Kobayashi, by eating 66 hot dogs to Kobayashi's 63 hot dogs.

The next year the two rivals tied at 59 hot dogs apiece, to go into 'overtime'. (I'm sure you're dying to know the result!) Well, Chestnut was the first to eat 5 hot dogs, while Kobayashi fell 'one bite short'. In 2010, after a long contract dispute, Kobayashi was arrested at the Nathan's Event for trespassing, since he was no longer a sanctioned eater. "And the beat goes on"...or does it?
9. Of the following, which royal feud came the latest in history?

Answer: Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots

Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots were first cousins once removed, with Henry VIII as Mary's great Uncle. Elizabeth became Queen of England at 25 years old in 1558, and Mary became Queen of France at 17 in 1559. Mary believed she had a claim to the English throne.

After the death of her husband, the King of France, in 1560 she returned to Scotland. Her claim to the throne of England might not have mattered much, but once back in Scotland she became enmeshed in scandal and Scottish noblemen rose in rebellion and imprisoned her.

She escaped and asked Elizabeth for asylum; But later Mary was again caught up in intrigue and executed in 1587.
10. Who was boxing World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali's biggest rival?

Answer: Joe Frazier

The incorrect choices where all boxing champions: i.e., Rocky Marciano (1923-1969) was an undefeated heavyweight champion from 1952 to 1956; Sugar Ray Robinson (1921-1989) held the welterweight title from 1946 to 1951, and the middleweight title in 1952; Floyd Patterson (1935-2006) held the undisputed heavyweight championship in 1956, and then regained the title in 1960.

But I digress...Let's talk about "Smokin" Joe Frazier (1944-2011). Frazier first fought Ali in 1971 ("The Fight of the Century") and won.

In 1974 Ali beat Frazier, and Ali won again the following year in "The Thrilla in Manila". It was a time when boxing was exciting.
