Ronald DeFeo, Jr., one of the sons, murdered the six other family members. Ronald DeFeo, Jr., is still imprisoned for the crime. The house was described in a book called "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson, and later, in a movie. The book and movie described the experiences of the Lutz family, who purchased the home after the DeFeo murders.

The Lutzes declared the house to be evil with much paranormal activity, causing Mr. Lutz to become moody - depressed, angry and violent. Later, Ronald DeFeo, Jr.'s lawyer admitted that he and the Lutzes had concocted the whole story of the haunting.

The fabricated story was related to the Ronald DeFeo, Jr. defense in court as a means of explaining why he killed his family.
