Dom Pedro II (1825, Brazil -1891, France), a descendant of the royal families Bragança and Habsburg, was the second and last emperor of Brazil. He stifled the separatist movements and managed maintaining the different regions as one country. He was an intellectual, polyglot and interested in bringing to Brazil the innovations that occurred abroad. Dom Pedro II made countless trips to other countries.

A very interesting trip he made in 1876 was to the United States during which he visited research institutions, universities, met scientists, politicians and intellectuals.

He visited 26 states and joined the President Ulysses S. Grant in the opening of the "Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.". At the end of American Civil War, he invited Confederate cotton planters to settle in Brazil and they came.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-), known as Pelé, is considered by many to be the greatest players in the history of soccer. At the age of 16 he went to Santos Futebol Clube where he played from 1956 to 1974 and won a lot of titles. With the famous shirt 10, Pele, only 17 years old at the time, was the youngest player to win in a FIFA World Cup in 1958.

He was the first player in the history of soccer to be three times world champion (1958, 1962 and 1970). In 1974 he left Santos to play for the New York Cosmos.

The aim of his hiring was to help popularize this sport in the United States. In 1977, in a friendly game between Cosmos and Santos marked the ended his career.
5. What made Anita Garibaldi famous?

Anita M.J.R da Silva (1821, Brazil - 1849, Italy) is best known as the wife and comrade-in-arms of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. She met him in 1836 when they joined the cause of Republica Riograndense in its attempt to separate from Brazil.

In the period 1842-1848 the couple formed the "Italian Legion" and fought in the war Uruguay/Argentina. Concerned about the news coming from Europe, the couple went there to defend the recently proclaimed Roman Republica. In August 1849 Anita, pregnant and with malaria, died in Mandriole, Italy. Garibaldi continued to fight for the unification of Italy.

They are considered "Heroes of the Two Worlds" because their military entreprises in South America and Europe. Anita Garibaldi is the subject of the movie "Red Shirts" (1952) in which Anna Magnani played as Anita.
6. What was the occupation of Antônio Carlos Brazileiro de Almeida Jobim known as Tom Jobim?

Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) was a Brazilian composer, conductor, singer, arranger and guitarist. He is considered one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian popular music. He was the main force in the creation of Bossa Nova style and his songs have been performed by many Brazilian and international singers like Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Besie, Oscar Peterson and Frank Sinatra.

In 1963, Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Moraes recorded one of his greatest hits and possibly the most performed Brazilian song abroad: "The Girl from Ipanema".

Marshal Cândido MS Randon (1865-1958) was a Brazilian military man who dedicated his life to the exploration of the Brazilian jungle, the expansion of the national telegraph network (indispensable at this time for linking remote areas with urban centers) and the implementation of a policy of protection for the Indians.

When Roosevelt, after losing the election came to Brazil and wanted to visit the Amazon, the Brazilian president suggested that he join Rondon to explore the hitherto unknown "The River Doubt" (later renamed Rio Roosevelt) in the Amazon Basin.

Then "The Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition", sponsored in part by the American Museum of Natural History, was organized with the presence of several American scientists, Rondon, the former president and his son Kermitt.

The expedition lasted from November 1913 to May 1914.

Amyr Klink (1955-) is a Brazilian explorer, sailor and writer. He became known when, in 1984, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat. The 3,700 mile journey from Lüderitz in Namimbia to Salvador in Brazil lasted 100 days. This trip is described in the book "Endless Sea".

He was the first person to cross the ocean in a rowboat and alone. At the end of 1989, with a new boat, he started a voyage that lasted 642 days alone; he was stuck in the ice waiting for the winter to end for seven and a half months and when he got out he headed for the Arctic.

He sailed 27,000 miles and describes the journey in the book "Parati: Between two Poles". Another adventure was the circumnavigation trip he made between 1998/1999 with the goal of going around the world through the shortest, quickest and most difficult route.

He left South Georgia Island and passed through the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans and returned to the point of origin. He did it alone in 88 days. He made numerous other trips alone and with crew.

The Brazilian Osvaldo Euclides de Souza Aranha (1894-1960) was a politician, diplomat and statesman who held several positions in the Brazilian government. He did an intense job with the government to align Brazil with the USA and its Allies. He became internationally known when, as head of the Brazilian delegation to the United Nations he supported the creation of the State of Israel.

As president of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947, when he realized that the proposal would not have the necessary votes to be approved, he used a stratagem that postponed the decision to another day, getting time to have more votes.

At the session of November 29, 1947, with the presence of 56 of the 57 members, the creation of the State of Israel was voted on and approved.
10. In what area of knowledge did Oscar Niemeyer build his career?

Answer: Architecture

Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) is considered one of the greatest architects of the 20th century and a key figure in the development of modern architecture. He became well known with the construction of Brasilia, a city planned to be the new federal capital of Brazil in 1960.

In 1956 the Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek, invited the architect Lúcio Costa, who was also an urban planner, and the architect Oscar Niemeyer for planning the new capital. Lúcio Costa was in charge to do the lay-out of the city and Niemeyer for the planning of public buildings, which are still admired. With the military coup that established the dictatorship in Brazil for 21 years, Niemeyer left Brazil only to return in the early 1980s. During this period he worked in many countries.

He declared "My best buildings are outside of Brazil ...". Niemeyer worked until 104 years, when he died, having built more buildings than any other modern architect.
