Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jedidiah and Jedidah are two names from the Old Testament that are remarkably similar. Jedidah was the mother of Josiah, the child who became king of Judah at the tender age of eight years. According to 2 Samuel 12:25, who was Jedidiah?

Answer: A name given by God for Solomon

Jedidiah was the name God told Nathan the prophet to give to Solomon, the son of David and Bathsheba, as per 2 Samuel 12:25. However, for whatever reason, the name never stuck. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Jedidiah means 'Beloved of the LORD'.

According to 2 Kings 22:1-2, Jedidah, the mother of Josiah, was the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. Using the NKJV, this is the only instance in which she is mentioned in Scripture.
2. Two Old Testament names that are quite similar are Eliada and Eliahba. In fact, there are two men in Scripture who went by the name Eliada, with one of them being the leader of the army of the Benjamites. However, according to Scripture, the second man called Eliada and Eliahba had more in common than similar names: they were both connected with King David.

Answer: True

True. In addition to having similar names, Eliada and Eliahba were both connected with King David.

Eliada was a son of David, born to him after he became king in Jerusalem, as per 2 Samuel 5:16 and 1 Chronicles 3:8.

Meanwhile, 2 Samuel 23:32 and 1 Chronicles state Eliahba was one of David`s Thirty Mighty Men.

As mentioned in the question, there is a second man in the Old Testament called Eliada. According to 2 Chronicles 17:17, he was a Benjamite and "a mighty man of valor", who led an army of two hundred thousand men.
3. Four different men are called Joah in the Old Testament and all are minor characters. The four men have a name similar to that of Jonah, a well known character in the Old Testament. Out of the four communities listed below, which one is Jonah most associated with?

Answer: Nineveh

Nineveh is the correct answer, of course. Jonah 1:2 tells of God giving instructions to Jonah to go to "Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me." However, going to Nineveh was something Jonah didn't want to do, so he tried to run from God by hopping on a ship bound for Tarshish.

In a well-known account, Scripture tells of the ship Jonah was on being battered by a severe storm when crew members decided to toss him overboard. Miraculously, Jonah was swallowed by a gigantic fish and survived in its stomach for three days before being regurgitated onto dry land. It was then Jonah came to the realization he could not run from God and decided to follow His instructions to go to Nineveh to preach a message of repentance.

According to Biblestudytools.com, Nineveh was on the eastern, or left bank, of the Tigris river, in modern day Iraq.

Meanwhile, using the NKJV, four men in the Old Testament were called Joah. They include:
1.) The son of Asaph and recorder during the reign of King Hezekiah, as per 2 Kings 18:18.
2.) The son of Zimmah and a Levite, as per 1 Chronicles 6:21.
3.) The son of Obed-edom , as per 1 Chronicles 26:4.
4.) The son of Joahaz and recorder during the reign of King Josiah, as per 2 Chronicles 34:8.
4. Two names easy to mix up in the NKJV are Amnon and Amon. Scripture states Amnon was a son of David who sexually assaulted his half-sister Tamar. Who was Amon, as per 2 Kings 21:18?

Answer: A king of Judah

Amon was a king of Judah, as per 2 Kings 21:18. He was twenty-two years old when he replaced his father Manasseh as king and reigned for two years. His mother was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.

Scripture states he was assassinated by his servants. Amon is regarded as an evil king, with 2 Kings 21:22 stating he "walked in all the ways that his father had walked; and he served the idols that his father had served, and worshiped them."

Meanwhile, details about Amnon, a son of David, sexually assaulting his half sister Tamar can be found in 2 Samuel 13:1-18.
5. Elipheleh and Eliphelet, two names appearing in the Old Testament, are extremely easy to mix up. Elipheleh was involved in returning the ark of God from the Philistines, while a number of different men are called Eliphelet. In fact, one of the men called Eliphelet was a son of David.

Answer: True

True. Eliphelet was a son of David with 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, stating Eliphelet was one of nine sons and one daughter born to David during his reign in Jerusalem. The same passage states six sons were born to David when he reigned as king in Hebron. Because he is mentioned in passing reference, little is known about David's son Eliphelet. (In 1 Chronicles 14:5 in the NKJV, Eliphelet's name appears as Elpelet.)

A number of other men are called Eliphelet in the Old Testament, however, all of them are minor characters. According to Wikipedia, Eliphelet means 'God is a deliverance.'

Meanwhile, details about Elipheleh and his involvement in the return of the ark of God to Jerusalem can be found in 1 Chronicles 15.
6. Two New Testament names similar to each other are Anna and Annas, but they don't get mixed up quite as often as some of the other names featured in this quiz, as one is female and one is male. Anna was an elderly prophetess who took tremendous delight in meeting the Infant Jesus, as per Luke 2:36-38. Who was Annas?

Answer: A high priest who Jesus appeared before

Annas was a high priest. He had the distinction of Jesus and Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, both appearing before him. According to Luke 3:2, Annas and Caiaphas were both high priests, with John 18:13 stating Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas. Annas and Caiaphas are also mentioned together in John 18:24 and Acts 4:6.

Needless to say, Annas and Caiaphas were both vehemently opposed to Jesus and the Christian religion which was born after Christ's resurrection and ascension to heaven.
7. Ahi and Eli are two Old Testament names that are quite similar. Actually, two men, both minor characters, were called Ahi. One was the son of Abdiel and the other was the son of Shomer. Who was Eli?

Answer: All of these answers are correct

All three answers are correct for Eli. In addition to being the judge of Israel, he doubled as the high priest and was the father of two corrupt sons -- Hophni and Phinehas.

While Eli was high priest, he raised Samuel, the miracle child of Elkanah and Hannah, as per 1 Samuel 1. Details about the wickedness of Hophni and Phinehas are documented in 1 Samuel 2. According to 1 Samuel 4:18, Eli served as judge of Israel for forty years.

Meanwhile, the first man called Ahi, the son of Abdiel, is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 5:15. The second man called Ahi, the son of Shomer, is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 7:34. The two men are mentioned in passing reference and little is known about them.
8. Two more Old Testament names that are similar are Barak and Baruch. Barak was the leader of the Israeli military in the days of Deborah. Who was Baruch?

Answer: A scribe for Jeremiah and writer of a book in the Catholic Bible

Baruch was a friend and a scribe for Jeremiah and the writer of a book in the Catholic Bible. Baruch 1 in the Catholic Bible states Baruch was the son of Neraiah, grandson of Mahseiah, and a descendant of Zedekiah, Hasadiah, and Hilkiah. The book was written in Babylon during the Jewish captivity.

Jeremiah, author of the book of Jeremiah, mentions Baruch multiple times and always in a good light. It was Baruch who transcribed the divine messages of Jeremiah.
9. Elisha was an understudy of Elijah and eventually became a well known prophet of God in his own right. Not so well known is the man who had a very similar name -- Elishah. Who was Elishah?

Answer: A great grandson of Noah

According to Genesis 10, Elishah was the oldest son of Javan and a grandson of Japheth and a great grandson of Noah. Elishah had three brothers -- Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. However, little else is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference in Scripture.
10. Two New Testament names easy to mix up are Aeneas and Ananias. Aeneas was a paralytic who was miraculously healed by Peter. Meanwhile, three different men are called Ananias. One was sent to visit Paul after his dramatic encounter with Christ, one was struck dead after he and his wife Sapphira withheld money from the early church while another man called Ananias was the high priest.

Answer: True

True. Aeneas was a paralytic who was miraculously healed by Peter with details appearing in Acts 9:32-35.

Meanwhile, three different men are called Ananias and they all appear in the book of Acts and nowhere else in the Bible. Details about Ananias visiting Paul after his dramatic encounter with Christ can be found in Acts 9:10-19 while mention of Ananias the high priest is made in Acts 24:1. Meanwhile, details about a third man called Ananias, who was stuck dead along with his wife Sapphira for withholding money from the early church, can be found in Acts 5:1-11.
