Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Belteshazzar and Belshazzar are two names from the Old Testament that look alike and sound alike, at least at first blush. According to Scripture, Belteshazzar was the name given to Daniel the prophet by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. Who was Belshazzar, as per Daniel 5:1-2?

Answer: Replaced his father Nebuchadnezzar as king of Babylon.

Belshazzar replaced his father Nebuchadnezzar as king of Babylon, as per Daniel 5:1-2 and 22. He is best known for seeing the fingers of a disembodied hand write a message on a wall during a gala banquet he hosted. He saw the highly-unusual sight after he, his wives and his concubines drank wine from goblets taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem. Scripture states the king's gathering drank from the sacred goblets and "praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone."

When Belshazzar called in Belteshazzar, or Daniel, to interpret the dream, he was accurately told his life was coming to an abrupt end. Daniel told the king "God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end". The fifth chapter of Daniel concludes with these two verses from the NKJV Bible: "That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old."
2. Two men with similar sounding names in the Old Testament are Zalmon and Salmon. Zalmon was one of David's mighty men, as per 2 Samuel 23:28. According to Ruth 4:21, who was Salmon?

Answer: The father of Boaz

Salmon was the father of Boaz, as per Ruth 4:21. Boaz and his wife Ruth were the parents of Obed. Meanwhile, Obed was the father of Jesse who was the father of David.

Little is known about Salmon, however, as his name is mentioned in passing reference. Some fascinating trivia about his name is the fact that using the NKJV, his name appears on more occasions in the New Testament then the Old Testament. Salmon's name can be found twice in the Old Testament (Ruth 4:20 and 21) but three times in the New Testament (Matthew 1:3-4 and Luke 3:32). In each incident in the New Testament, Salmon's name is part of the genealogy of Christ.
3. Two brothers in the Old Testament with similar sounding names were none other than Huz and Buz. According to Genesis 22:21, who were the parents of Huz and Buz?

Answer: Nahor and Milcah

Nahor and his wife Milcah were the parents of Huz and Buz, two names from Biblical times that sound rather funny in the 21st Century. However, little is known about Huz and Buz as they are mentioned in passing Scripture.

The names Huz and Buz appear in only Genesis 22:21. To put the verse in context, here's how Genesis 22:20-24 reads in the NKJV:
"Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, 'Indeed Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.' And Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah."
4. Potiphar and Poti-Pherah, or Potiphera in the NIV, are two men mention in Genesis with similar names. Out of the four options below, what man's life was MOST ASSOCIATED with Potiphar and Poti-Pherah?

Answer: Joseph

The correct answer is Joseph. According to Scripture, Poti-Pherah, or Potiphera in the NIV, was the priest of On and his daughter Asenath was Joseph's wife. In other words, Poti-Pherhah was Joseph's father-in-law. (See Genesis 41:45 and 50)

Meanwhile, Potiphar became the owner of Joseph after he was taken to Egypt and sold as a slave by Midianite traders. The traders purchased Joseph for twenty pieces of silver after his brothers turned against him and sold him into slavery, as per Genesis 37:28. Scripture goes on to tell of Joseph serving as a slave in the household of Potiphar, an officer of the Pharaoh and captain of the guard. Joseph would be falsely accused of attempted rape by Potiphar's wife and thrown into prison, as per Genesis 39.
5. Ahab and Rahab are two of the better known characters in the Old Testament with similar sounding names. According to Scripture, Ahab was an evil king whose wife Jezebel is generally regarded as the most wicked woman in the Bible. Meanwhile, Rahab was a famous prostitute who helped hide two Israelite spies. In what city did Rahab work as a prostitute? (Joshua 2:1)

Answer: Jericho

According to Scripture, Rahab was a prostitute in Jericho. Scripture states Joshua sent two spies into the Promised Land with expressed orders to take a good look at Jericho. (Details can be found in Joshua 2.) The two spies, who are not named, are best remembered for taking refuge in the house of Rahab, a prostitute. Because Rahab gave the two spies a safe haven, Scripture states the Israelites spared her life, as well as the lives of her family, when they conquered Jericho.
6. Two similar names in the Old Testament are Eliab and Eliam. Scripture states Eliab was a brother of David who had nothing but contempt for him. Who was Eliam? (2 Samuel 11:3)

Answer: Father of Bathsheba

Eliam was the father of Bathsheba, as per 2 Samuel 11:3. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. The father of Bathsheba is mentioned only once in Scripture, with the verse stating, "So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, 'Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite'?"

There is a second Eliam in Scripture. He was one of David's mighty men, as per 2 Samuel 23:34.

In case you're wondering about Eliab having nothing but contempt for David, details can be found in the seventeenth chapter of 1 Samuel, Scripture telling of David battling and defeating Goliath. Verse 28 tells of Eliab burning with anger. Just prior to David's spectacular victory, Eliab, in the NKJV Bible, states: "'Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle'."
7. Japheth and Jephthah are two names that can be easily mixed up. Out of the four choices below, which one best describes the two men?

Answer: A son of Noah and a judge of Israel.

Japheth was a son of Noah while Jephthah was a judge of Israel as well as a mighty man of valor.

Not much is known about Japheth as he is largely mentioned in passing reference. According to Genesis 10:1, Noah and his unnamed wife were the parents of three boys. In addition to Japheth, there were Shem and Ham. Genesis 10:2 goes on to state Japheth was the father of Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

Meanwhile, Jephthah was a Gileadite who was the son of a harlot and according to Judges 11:1, he was "a mighty man of valor." The chapter goes on to tell of Jephthah leading the Israelites to spectacular military victories over their adversaries.
8. Amos and Amoz are two Biblical names that are remarkably similar. Amos was a prophet of God and the author of a book in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament that bears his name. According to 2 Kings 19:20, Who was Amoz?

Answer: The father of Isaiah

Amoz was the father of Isaiah, a prophet of God. Not much is known about him, however, as he is mentioned in passing reference. 2 Kings 19:20 in the NKJV simply states, "Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard'."

Passing mention about Amoz being the father of Isaiah is also made in 2 Kings 20:1, 2 Chronicles 26:22, 2 Chronicles 32:20 and 32, Isaiah 1:1, 2:1, 13:1, 20:2, 37:2 and 21 as well as 38:1. In other words, Amoz's name appears thirteen times in Scripture and in every case, he is simply described as being the father of Isaiah.
9. Two men with similar names in the New Testament are Clopas and Cleopas. According to John 19:25, Clopas was the husband of a woman called Mary who was at the crucifixion scene along with the likes of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. Who, according to Luke 24:18, was Cleopas?

Answer: A man who saw Jesus after His resurrection.

Cleopas, according to Scripture, saw Jesus walking on the road to Emmaus after He had risen from the dead. Scripture goes on to tell of Cleopas and an unidentified friend inviting Jesus into their home. Details can be found in Luke 24:13-31.

However, little is known about Cleopas and Clopas as they are each mentioned only once in Scripture.
10. We end our quiz with two men from the Book of Acts, one named Barnabas and the other Barsabas. Barnabas was known as the Son of Encouragement and was a key worker in the early church. Who, according to Acts 1:23, was Barsabas?

Answer: A man in the running to replace Judas Iscariot as disciple

Barsabas was in the running to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth disciple. According to Acts 1:23, he was called Barsabas, but his real name was Joseph. Making things a bit more complicated, Scripture states he was surnamed Justus.

His name, along with that of Matthias, was in the running to replace Judas, but Scripture states after lots were cast, Matthias was selected. After this, no mention is made of Barsabas or Matthias in Scripture.

There is a third man with a name similar to that of Barnabas and Barsabas. The third man is Barabbas, a man described in Matthew 27:15 as a "notorious prisoner" who was given his freedom over Jesus. According to Scripture, Jesus was beaten, humiliated, scourged, tortured and crucified only to rise from the dead three days later.
