Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is pastafarianism, a social movement that takes a lighthearted view on religion, otherwise known as?

Answer: Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster

In 2005, an Oregon State University graduate named Bobby Henderson wrote a letter to the Kansas State Board of Education challenging the inclusion of the instruction of intelligent design in classroom. His satirical letter argued that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was just as valid as intelligent design and asked that it be included in the curriculum.

Henderson did not receive a reply from the Board of Education so he posted his letter on his website and it started to get all kinds of attention and became an Internet phenomenon.

The attention has included death threats and hate mail for his alleged anti-religious views.

2. Why does the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashannah) come on a different day of our calendar each year?

3. In terms of Christian salvation, what is the belief called Universalism?

Answer: everybody will be saved

In philosophy, Universalism holds that there are certain principles which apply to all people everywhere no matter their religion or lack of religion. Christian Universalism upholds belief in God as a loving Parent, belief in Jesus Christ, belief that the soul is immortal, belief that sin is real, and belief in universal reconciliation. Universal reconciliation holds that, due to God's loving and merciful nature, no soul will be condemned forever nor destroyed but rather all will be reconciled to God in the end.

The Universalist General Convention of 1899 adopted these five tenets as fundamental to their denomination. Most Universalists would say that humans are destined to salvation and that there is no such thing as hell.

4. Protestants made much ado about keeping the sabbath in the 16th-18th centuries. From which religious group did the whole notion of "sabbath" come?

Answer: Jews

Before there were Protestants, even before there were Christians, there were faithful Jews keeping the sabbath (Exodus 20:8-10). The Jewish concept of resting on the seventh day was imported by early Christians into their observance of the Lord's Day, the Day of Resurrection.

The Old Testament contains many rules governing what may and what may not be done on the Sabbath. The early Protestant observance of the sabbath included abstaining from work, from buying and selling, from sports, and from all manner of frivolity.

5. Catholic Saints - January 28th is the feast day of what saint and philosopher known for writing "Summa Theologica" and "Summa Contra Gentiles"?

Answer: Thomas Aquinas

As the younger son of a prominent family, Thomas Aquinas was expected to become the Abbot of a Benedictine monastery. Against their wishes, he joined the Dominican order and melded Aristotelian philosophy with Christian thought. "Summa Theologica" is an instructional guide to Christian thought structured as a series of arguments.

Thomas Moore (feast day June 22) was a philosopher, author of "Utopia", and advisor to Henry VIII, who had him executed for refusing to recognize Henry as the head of the English Church. Thomas Becket (feast day December 29) was an advisor to Henry II. During a conflict over the duties and privileges of the Church, Becket was murdered by Henry's followers. Thomas the Apostle (feast day July 3) was not present at Jesus's first post-resurrection appearance to his apostles and did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he could see Him and put his hands in His wounds.

6. When Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen as pope on 13 March of 2013, many thought his choice of the name "Francis" honoured St. Francis Xavier. He told the press on 16 March that he chose instead St. Francis of Assisi. Who was St. Francis Xavier?

Answer: co-founder of the Jesuit Order

Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was the co-founder of the Society of Jesus in 1534, along with St. Ignatius of Loyola. With five other men, they professed vows of chastity, poverty and special obedience to the pope. Pope Paul III approved their charter in 1540. Francis Xavier served as a missionary to India, Japan and other locations in Asia. He died before he could enter China. Many Jesuit churches and other institutions are named after Francis Xavier. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope.

8. What followers of a centuries-old monotheistic religion traditionally wear turbans to cover their hair?

Answer: Sikhs

At the time I write this (2017) there are about 27 million Sikhs on earth, most of whom live in India. As a part of the five articles of their faith, Sikh men, and sometimes women, wear turbans as a way of protecting and covering their hair; the latter is considered sacred by the Sikhs, and is never to be cut.

While people of other faiths may at times wear head coverings for reasons of respect, Sikhs are the only people who traditionally wear the turban and who wear it continuously.
