Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Proverbs 4:6, who will guard you if you love her?

Answer: Wisdom

Proverbs 4:6 says: "Don't abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you; love her, and she will guard you." The first part of Proverbs 4 (verses 1-9) is written as a father giving advice to his children. It speaks of wisdom and understanding and the importance of holding on to them.

Some Bible commentaries, such as Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible, compare wisdom in these verses to Christ.
2. Proverbs 5:15-23 is part of a passage that discusses enjoying one's marriage. What is a man's wife compared to in verse 19?

Answer: A loving doe

Proverbs 5:18-19: "Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful fawn--let her breasts always satisfy you; be lost in her love forever." Many men are tempted by what they do not have, and don't enjoy that which they do have. Here, Solomon is giving advice on not falling into the temptation of adultery by delighting in one's own wife.
3. Proverbs 8:17 says, "I love those who love me, and those who search for me find me." Who is speaking?

Answer: Wisdom

All of Proverbs 8 is a monologue from the personified Wisdom. As verse 4 establishes, "People, I call out to you; my cry is to mankind." God's wisdom is there for the taking, but as verse 17 suggests, one must look for it. It cannot be gained by simply sitting around doing nothing.

This is echoed in Matthew 7:7, "Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and the door will be opened to you."
4. What word is missing from the following verse: "but the one who sins against me harms himself; all who hate me love ________"?(Proverbs 8:36)

Answer: Death

The personified Wisdom is still talking and ending her appeal to mankind. The first part of the verse reveals that harm is brought upon one's self through sin. This harm through sin only leads to one end: death. The love for sin reflects a hate for God, which puts man on the path to death.
5. According to Proverbs 12:1, someone who loves instruction also loves what?

Answer: Knowledge

The full verse reads, "Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but one who hates correction is stupid." Other versions of the Bible use the word 'brutish' instead of 'stupid'. Barnes' Notes on the Bible mentions that this is a comparison to brute beasts, and that the difference between man and beast is the ability to learn and improve by instruction and discipline.
6. Proverbs 13:24 is a verse for those who advocate spanking children by comparing discipline to love. According to this verse, one hates his son if he does not use which of the following?

Answer: Rod

The HCSB version says, "The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently." Many of us have heard the phrase, 'Spare the rod, spoil the child.' The lesson here (whether you believe in spanking your children or not) is that it is a parent's duty to discipline their children and correct their wrong-doings. Disciplining children is mentioned several times in Proverbs and other books. Proverbs 29:15 offers up another reason for discipline: "A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a youth left to himself is a disgrace to his mother."
7. According to Proverbs 17:9, what does one conceal to promote love?

Answer: Offense

"Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but whoever gossips about it separates friends." Many of us would say 'Forgive and Forget'. This verse is one of many that warn against gossip. It is best to let past offenses go instead of dwelling on them and constantly bringing them up.
8. Proverbs 17:17 states that "A friend loves all the time, and a _____ is born for a difficult time." What word is missing?

Answer: Brother

It is important to have good friends. There is also a difference between friends who are there for you when you need them the most and those who are only there during the good times. Some of your friends can be close to you like 'brothers' and will stick by you in the toughest of times.

The brother mentioned here is different than just a casual friend. He is the friend that is there during your time of adversity or trouble.
9. "...And those who love it will eat its fruit." (Proverbs 18:21) What is the 'it' that is being referred to here, which holds life and death in its power?

Answer: Tongue

"Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." This verse can be taken in a very literal sense...the words we say can bring about someone's death or salvation (or our own) according to our testimony, such as in trials.

It could also refer to the final day of judgment. Matthew 12:36-37 supports this in saying, "I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
10. According to Proverbs 21:21, what will you find if you pursue righteousness and faithful love?

Answer: Life, righteousness, and honor

"Those who pursue righteousness and faithful love will find life, righteousness, and honor." Here, life and honor are additions to righteousness that is found through its pursuit. These additional benefits come from God's love of righteousness. Matthew 5:6 says, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled." Proverbs 15:9 speaks to God's love for righteousness: "The Lord detests the way of the wicked, but He loves the one who pursues righteousness."
