Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Messianic Psalm seems to give us Christ's dying words, to prophesy in detail about His crucifixion, and even to tell us that His garments will be gambled away?

Answer: 22

Christ quotes the first verse of this Psalm while hanging on the cross: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Some believe He may have quoted the entire Psalm, and that He was in fact its subject. It seems to speak of His crucifixion: "But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him . . . My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death . . . they pierced my hands and my feet . . .

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture" (vs. 6-18).
2. Who said, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel?" (King James Version)

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah 7:14 is taken by Christians to refer to the virgin birth of Christ. Some modern translations choose "young maiden" instead of "virgin", which has given rise to controversy in theological circles. The early Greek translation of the scriptures, the Septuagint, uses the Greek word for virgin.
3. Complete this quote: "For unto us a child is born . . . and his name shall be called wonderful, counselor, Almighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of ___."

Answer: Peace

Isaiah 9:6. Isaiah also predicts that this ruler will sit upon David's throne and establish his kingdom forever.
4. "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of ____ . . . And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him . . . with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth." What name is missing from this messianic prophecy?

Answer: Jesse

The quote comes from Isaiah 11:1-10. Jesse was David's father and an ancestor of Christ.
5. Whom does Isaiah say will seek this rod (i.e. the Messiah)?

Answer: The Gentiles

See Isaiah 11:10. Christians see this prophecy as being fulfilled in the Apostle Paul's mission to the Gentiles.
6. Isaiah speaks of a man "wounded for our transgressions" and "bruised for our iniquities" by whose "stripes we are healed." To what do most Christians believe this prophecy refers?

Answer: The Crucifixion

Isaiah 53:3-9 is the famous "man of sorrows" passage. It also speaks of the victim being silent before his executioners, which Christians take as prophetic of Christ's refusal to defend Himself before the Sanhedrin.
7. Jeremiah said, "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted, because they were not." What do Christians say this refers to?

Answer: Herod's slaughter of the innocents

Matthew quotes this prophecy in his Gospel and applies it to Herod's slaughter of the male children around the time of Christ's birth.
8. Who said the day was coming when God would "make a new covenant with Israel" by putting his "law in their inward parts"?

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah 31:29-34. He also speaks of a Branch of Righteousness coming out of the house of David (23:5-8; 33:15). This new covenant, in the Christian view, is the new testament God makes with man when he gives his Son up to be crucified.
9. To avoid Herod's slaughter, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt with their son. This was done, according to Matthew, in order that what man's prophecy might be fulfilled?

Answer: Hosea

Matthew 2:15: "That it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 'Out of Egypt have I called my son.'" The reference is to Hosea 11:1.
10. Christ refers to the "sign" of this prophet to describe His death and resurrection.

Answer: Jonah

Just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days before he was spit back upon the earth, so too would Christ die and be resurrected on the third day.
11. Micah prophesied that out of this town would come the "ruler of Israel, whose goings forth have been from old, from everlasting."

Answer: Bethlehem

Micah 5:2. According to Luke, Mary and Joseph returned to Joseph's home city of Bethlehem to be taxed during a census, and there Christ was born (2:1-4).
12. Who prophesied that the Messiah would come "lowly and riding upon an ass"?

Answer: Zechariah

Zechariah 9:9. Christians see this as being fulfilled during Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, when he rode a donkey. A king riding a donkey, as opposed to a horse, was symbolically bringing peace rather than war.
13. Zechariah prophesied, "If ye think good, give me my price . . . So they weighed for my price __ pieces of silver." What number is missing from the blank?

Answer: thirty

This is seen as being fulfilled when Judas betrays Christ to the Sanhedrin and is paid 30 pieces of silver. The money is also used to buy a potter's field, as prophesied: "and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord" (Zechariah 11:12-13).
14. Christians see Zechariah to be prophesying the crucifixion of Christ and its aftermath when he says, "Awake, o sword, against my ___ . . . smite [him], and the ____ shall be scattered." What is missing from the blanks?

Answer: shepherd, sheep

Zechariah 13:7. Zechariah also prophesied that men would "look upon me whom they have pierced, and . . . mourn for him" (12:10).
15. Malachi prophesied, "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me." To whom do Christians think he was referring?

Answer: John the Baptist

Malachi 3:1. This prophecy is applied to John the Baptist in the Gospels numerous times, including Matthew 3:3 and John 1:23.
