Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Abraham started his journey to Canaan, via Haran, in Ur of the Chaldeans. If he were starting this journey in the 21st century, from which country would he be leaving?

Answer: Iraq

Genesis 11:31 tells that Abram and Sarai, his wife, were taken by his father and accompanied by Lot, his nephew, from Ur to Haran where they settled. Abram later journeyed to Canaan.
2. Moses and the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years; he received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai during this time. In which country is this mountain thought to be today?

Answer: Egypt

Mount Sinai, the site where Moses received the Ten Commandments, is thought by many biblical scholars to be in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula. Other biblical scholars believe that Mount Sinai was in Saudi Arabia, citing Jabel el Lawz or the mountain of Laws as the location.
3. Ruth was a Moabite woman who married a man from Bethlehem. Moab was located in what present-day country?

Answer: Jordan

Moab was located on the eastern side of the Dead Sea. The Moabites and the Israelites were often in conflict, but this conflict is not mentioned in the story of Ruth.
4. Jonah was told by God to go to Nineveh in Assyria to preach. Although we cannot be certain, in which present-day city and country is the "great city" of Nineveh thought to be located?

Answer: Mosul, Iraq

Nineveh was referred to in the book of Jonah as "the great city" and it became the capitol of Assyria around 700 B.C. Many believe that Nineveh is part of the present-day city of Mosul, Iraq and many archaeologists have done excavation work there. The war in Iraq is a cause of concern for this and other archaeological sites in Iraq.
5. Jonah disobeyed the Lord and, instead of going to Nineveh, he boarded a ship headed to Tarshish. In which of the following modern-day countries is that city thought to have been?

Answer: Spain

It is not certain, but it is thought that Tarshish was located in what is now southwest Spain. Perhaps it was Tartessus. It has also been suggested that it might have been on Sardinia, an island off the coast of Italy.
6. Jesus called his first disciples at the Sea of Galilee and, following the resurrection, he appeared to them there again. What is this body of water called today?

Answer: Sea of Galilee

Some current maps use the name Sea of Kinnereth, or some derivative of this, and it was the name used in the Old Testament. The name Sea of Tiberias was the Roman name for the sea. It was also called Sea of Gennesaret in the Bible.
7. Judea and Samaria were both important places in Jesus' life and ministry. What is the area where these historical territories were located now called?

Answer: West Bank

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea and he had the famous conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria; these territories are now located in the eastern central part of Israel. The term West Bank was given by Jordan following its annexation of the areas in 1948.

It is also sometimes called the occupied territories. The Golan Heights is a strip of disputed territory between Israel and Syria. The Gaza Strip is also another area of conflict; it is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the southern part of Israel.
8. The apostle Paul was born as a Roman citizen in Tarsus of Cilicia. What country would that city be located in today?

Answer: Turkey

When Paul was born in Tarsus, that area was already part of the Roman Empire, so he was born as a Roman citizen. This was something that worked in his favor when he was about to be flogged and questioned, as recorded in Acts 22, because the commander withdrew upon learning that Paul was a Roman citizen. (Acts 22:23-29)
9. Which of the following churches that are mentioned by name in the New Testament are in modern-day Greece?

Answer: Corinth

Paul's missionary journeys took him far from Jersualem. Philippi and Thessalonica are two other cities in Greece with churches established by Paul. Thessaloniki is a city in present-day Greece. It would have been too easy an answer though.
10. The book of Revelation in the New Testament includes letters to the following seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. All of these cities were located in which of the following present-day countries?

Answer: Turkey

The seven churches listed are: Ephesus (Izmir area), Smyrna (Izmir), Pergamum (Bergama), Thyatira (Akhisar), Sardis (Sart), Philadelphia (Alashehir), and Laodicea (Denizli). The names in parentheses are the present-day names or present-day cities located in the same area. These letters are in Revelation 2 and 3.
