Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gideon is a well known Bible character to most people. What little known man accompanied him on a spy mission against a Midianite camp? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Phurah

Judges 7:10 is the only time this man's name is mentioned when God tells Gideon to take Phurah with him when he goes down to "listen in" on the Midianites.
2. Isaac's wife Rebekah (Rebecca) had a nurse whose death was important enough to warrant mention in the Scriptures. What was her nurse's name? (Hint-This was also the name of a famous woman from the time of the Judges) (KJV spelling)

Genesis 41:45. She was the daughter of the priest of On. Joseph's Egyptian name was Zaphnath-paaneah for those who are curious.
4. The prophet Elisha was well known in the Old Testament. What little known man was Elisha's servant before contracting leprosy? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Gehazi

Gehazi himself helped Elisha in the ministry, but after the healing of Naaman the leper, Gehazi took advantage of an opportunity to make a little money on the side by lying about his master. He was cursed with Naaman's leprosy as a result of his greed. See II Kings 4-5 for more details about this man.
5. Most people know about Moses and Aaron. What little known man often helped them and was left in charge of the people along with Aaron while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law? (Hint-He held Moses's hands while the Israelites fought against Amalek raiders) (KJV spelling)

Answer: Hur

Exodus 17:12 and 24:14. He is not mentioned in Exodus 32 when Israel actually makes and worships the golden calf. Some believe that he was stoned for refusing to cooperate with the Israelites' request for a idol to represent God.
6. Most people are familiar with this man's name, if not his character. What Bible character had the same name as a little-known, renegade Levite who led a whole tribe in idolatry during the time of the Judges? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Jonathan

See Judges 18:30 and I Samuel. Micah originally convinced Jonathan to be his priest, but later on the whole tribe of Dan comes by and convinces him that being their priest would be better yet. The more famous Jonathan is David's friend, King Saul's son.
7. Ruth is a fairly well known Bible character--though her son is not nearly as well known. What name did the neighboring women give Ruth's son shortly after his birth? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Obed

Ruth 4:17. The only personal information about Obed in the Bible is the details of his birth. Nothing is said about his adult life. Jesse was Obed's son, and King David was Jesse's son. Mahlon was the name of Ruth's first husband who died in Moab (See Ruth chapter 4).
8. Jeremiah was a well known prophet. God told him to use the children of a certain man as an object lesson for the children of Israel. What was this often forgotten man's name? (Hint-A very subtle man in the Bible also had this name) (KJV spelling)

Answer: Jonadab

Jeremiah 35. Jonadab the son of Rechab had commanded his sons and their families not to drink wine, plant vineyards, or build houses. They kept this commandment of their father unfailingly, and God rewarded them for their faithfulness to their deceased father by saying they would never lack "a man to stand before Me forever." (Jeremiah 35:18-19).

The subtle Jonadab is mentioned in II Sam. 13:3. He talked his cousin, Amnon, into committing incest and rape against Tamar, Amnon's half sister.
9. Some of Jesus' disciples are fairly well known, but often their parents are not. What little known father of one of Jesus' disciples shared his name with one of Jesus' better known disciples? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Simon

Simon was name of Judas Iscariot's father according to John 12:4. Simon was also Peter's given name, but Jesus called him Peter meaning "rock." (Matthew 10:2 is one reference for this fact.)
10. Peter and Andrew are somewhat well known disciples of Jesus. What was the name of Jesus' lesser known disciple from Peter and Andrew's home town who later went to Andrew when he had a problem? (Hint-Also the name of an early church deacon) (KJV spelling)

Answer: Philip

John 1:43-46. In John 12:20, some Greeks came to Philip wishing to speak with Jesus, and Philip consulted Andrew who took the men to Jesus Himself. The deacon Philip is spoken of in Acts 6:5.
11. The Apostle Paul is well known, but which man of God met him shortly after his conversion and laid hands on him to heal him of his blindness? (Hint-Another man by this name lied and was struck down dead for it) (KJV spelling)

Answer: Ananias

Acts 9:10. God called Ananias to go and pray for Paul (Saul) and lay hands on him to heal him of his blindness. Considering that Paul had been coming to that city for the purpose of destroying all the Christians, it is no wonder that Ananias was hesitant about the whole matter. Acts 5 contains the story of the Ananias who lied.
12. The Apostle Peter was well known in the early church, but what lesser known Roman centurion converted to Christianity under the ministry of Peter and convinced the apostle that Gentiles could also be saved? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Cornelius

This story is found in Acts chapter 10. Peter sees the vision of the clean and unclean animals in this passage, and God reveals to him that the unclean have now become clean. Cornelius (and others there with him that believed) received the Holy Ghost much to the amazement of Peter and the other Jewish Christians of the time.
13. Herod is a familiar name to many, and actually the Bible mentions several Herods from the same family. Assuming Herod is somewhat well known, what little known early Christian was known for having grown up with Herod the tetrarch? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Manaen

Acts 13:1. The church at Antioch was blessed with several early Christian prophets and teachers. Among these were the mentioned Manean, the Apostle Paul, Barnabas and others.
14. The Apostle Paul had many acquaintances. What little known ruler of a synagogue was beaten by the Greeks before the city judgment seat for having complained about Christians and caused a disturbance by it? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Sosthenes

The Jews were angry with the Apostle Paul, but the deputy of the city Gallio treated the complainers rudely and refused to hear them. The Greeks then took advantage of the situation and punished Sosthenes for his part in the commotion by beating him as Gallio looked on and did nothing. See Acts 18:12-17 for more details.

Interestingly, a man named Sosthenes is also mentioned in I Corinthians 1:1 as Paul's brother in the faith that is also speaking to the Corinthian believers. This same man may have later converted to Christianity and helped the Apostle Paul on later missionary journeys.
15. The Apostle Paul also knew several women. Which little known set of women did he beg to be "of the same mind in the Lord" in one of his epistles? (KJV spelling)

Answer: Euodias and Syntyche

In Philippians 4:2, Paul begs the two women to be "of the same mind." The Bible does not say in what way they weren't of the same mind, but the Apostle Paul was anxious for them to settle their differences for the good of all concerned.
