Peter Revives 'Dead as a Door Nail' Dorcas Quiz

One of my favorite stories in Acts is about the disciple Peter reviving a widow called Dorcas from the dead. Although only eight verses are devoted to the story, there's a wealth of information. How much do you know? (The NIV was used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story of the Peter reviving Dorcas from the dead is told in Acts 9: 36-43. According to verse 36, in what community did Dorcas live?

Answer: Joppa

The correct answer is Joppa. The community is now known as Jaffa and is part of Tel Aviv, on the Mediterranean Sea.
2. In addition to being a widow, Dorcas is described in verse 36 as being a disciple. In the same verse, it states Dorcas is the translation of another name. What was that name?

Answer: Tabitha

The correct name is Tabitha. According to information on the Web, Tabitha is of Aramaic origin and means 'gazelle.'
3. Scripture says Peter was in a community not far from Joppa. According to Acts 9: 38, what was the town?

Answer: Lydda

The correct answer is Lydda. According to the Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible, Lydda is now known as Ludd. In Crusader times, it became known as the traditional site of martyrdom for St. George, the patron saint of England.
4. According to verse 36, what characteristics did Dorcas exhibit in her life?

Answer: Always doing good and helping the poor.

The correct answer is "always doing good and helping the poor." In different places in the Bible, helping the poor is pointed out as a strong virtue. In Acts 10: 2, for example, Cornelius, a Roman centurion who was also a Christian believer, is described as "giving generously" to those in need.
5. In verse 37, it says Dorcas became sick. Then what happened to her?

Answer: Scripture simply says she died.

Scripture simply says she died. There is no mention of her ailment, apart from a statement that she became sick. And there is no mention of how long she was sick before she died. In verse 37, it also states the body of Dorcas was washed and placed in an upstairs room. In other words, the body was prepared for burial. It's apparent that she was "dead as a door nail."
6. In verse 39, we are told Peter was taken to an upstairs room where Dorcas' body was. What sight did Peter see when he arrived?

Answer: All the widows were standing around him, crying.

The correct answer is all the widows were standing around him, crying. It also states that the widows showed Paul the robes and other clothing Dorcas made when she was alive. Such a statement indicates Dorcas might have been actively involved in making clothing for the poor.
7. In verse 40, we are told Peter knelt on his knees by Dorcas' body and prayed. What three words did he say (NIV)?

Answer: Tabitha, get up.

The correct answer is "Tabitha, get up". As stated in the answer to Question 2, her name was Tabitha, in Aramaic. However, Scripture also refers to her as Dorcas, the translation of Tabitha. It's interesting to note Peter sent all the people out of the room before he prayed, and according to Scripture, he simply said only three words.
8. After Peter said three words to Tabitha, what happened?

Answer: She opened her eyes and, seeing Peter, she sat up.

The correct answer is that she opened her eyes and, seeing Peter, she sat up. This Scripture reminds me of Jesus raising the widow's son from the dead in Nain. In Luke 7: 14, Jesus stated to the widow's son: "Young man, I say to you, get up!" Verse 15 states the young man sat up and began to talk.
9. According to verse 41, what sight did the widows and believers see?

Answer: Peter holding Dorcas by her hand and presenting her to the people alive.

The correct answer is Peter took Dorcas by her hand and presented her to the people alive. It must have been an amazing sight for the gathering as, only a few minutes before, they had been overwhelmed with grief. Remember that they were not present for her actual resurrection.
10. According to verse 42, what was the result of Peter raising Dorcas from the dead?

Answer: This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

The correct answer is that this event became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. The story of Dorcas being raised from the dead is only one of several incidents in which Peter performed miracles in Acts. For example, in verses 32-25, just before the report about Dorcas, Scripture tells of Peter healing Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years.
