Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A snake tricked the first man and woman into eating the forbidden fruit. How did God punish that early ancestor of serpents?

Answer: God told the serpent it would crawl on its belly and eat dust.

God was very sad that the serpent had convinced Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Eve had given the fruit to Adam as well. Because of their actions, man would have to live in pain and suffer.

God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life."

God told Adam and Eve that they would have a descendant someday that the serpent would hurt very badly. However the same descendant would crush the serpent's head. One day they would have a deliverer who would fix what had been destroyed.

(Genesis 3:14)
2. Jacob blessed his sons, who were the leaders of the tribes of Israel, each with a special blessing before he died. Which of his sons was called a "serpent in the pathway"?

Answer: Dan

In his final breath, Jacob blessed each of his sons. He gave them words of promise and also words that described their character. To Dan, Jacob left these words:

"Dan shall judge his people
As one of the tribes of Israel.
Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
A viper by the path,
That bites the horse's heels
So that its rider shall fall backward.
I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!" (Genesis 49: 16-18)

Dan was constantly a tribe that caused trouble for the Israelites. A descendant of Dan did judge the Israelites, Samson. However Samson was not a stable man of wisdom, but destroyed others by his folly with the Philistines. The king that came from the tribe of Dan, Jeroboam, introduced idolatry into Israel. Israel never truly served God afterwards without idols present in the land. Some believe the blessing also referred to the antichrist in that the antichrist would come from the tribe of Dan also.
3. When God spoke to Moses through the burning bush, He gave him signs to show Pharaoh. One of the signs happened when Moses put down his rod and it turned into a snake. What happened when Moses did this sign in front of Pharaoh?

Answer: Pharaoh's magicians tried to copy, but Moses' snake ate their rods.

When Moses and Aaron appeared before Pharaoh, they threw Moses' rod down as God had commanded. The rod instantly became a serpent. Pharaoh laughed and told his magicians to do the same. They threw down their rods and the rods of the magicians became serpents as well.

However Moses' snake was more powerful and ate the others. Moses picked it up by the tail and it turned into a rod again; the magician's did not get their rods back. Because Moses' rod had consumed their means of magic, Moses left with the power of Egypt as well as the power of God. (Exodus 5)
4. Moses led the Israelites into the wilderness to find the promised land. However they complained so much they made God very angry. God sent serpents to bite them and many died. When the people begged for mercy, what did God tell them to do be saved from the snake bits?

Answer: look on a bronze serpent Moses had made

God's people complained so bad, God got fed up with it. He sent poisonous serpents to bite them and many died. The Israelites came to Moses and begged for mercy. God told Moses to make a brass serpent and put it up high on a pole. Anyone who looked at the serpent was healed. God showed the Israelites how poisonous their attitude had been, and also showed His mercy. However He would have to keep teaching the Israelites because they did not learn their lesson.

(Numbers 21:8-9)
5. Solomon wisely told the people he ruled that a serpent would bite without cause. Which foolish individual did he compare the serpent to?

Answer: a babbler

Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 10:11, "Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better." Just as a serpent would bite without cause, the babbler would talk without reason. Solomon spoke various times about the dangers of gossip and a false tale.
6. Isaiah prophesied of a day of peace, where the wolf and lamb would be together and the lion would eat straw like cattle. In that era, what did Isaiah prophesy would be the serpent's meat?

Answer: dust

God told Isaiah that one day the wolf and the lamb would live in peace with each other. The lion would not kill any more animals and would eat grass like a cow. The serpent would also not harm any creature and would eat the dust of the ground. It was a prophesy that God would rule the world and heavens someday, and all of creation would be subject to his rule. There would be no evil, pain, or suffering, which had been the result of man's sin.

(Isaiah 65:25)
7. Jesus was merciful in many of his teachings, but two groups of people tried to contradict his work with their arguments and actions. Who did Jesus call a generation of vipers, because they had murdered the prophets before him and professed to be holy but were unclean in their hearts?

Answer: Pharisees and Sadducees

The Pharisees and Sadducees were repeatedly critical of the actions of Jesus and the disciples. They were against the disciples because they did not wash their hands and they rebuked Jesus for healing people on the Sabbath or forgiving sins. They thought themselves pure and able to make righteous judgment of others. They would frequently profess their holiness to others and try to contradict Jesus' teaching with their logic.

Jesus told the Pharisees and Sadducees, "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." (Matthew 12:34-37)
8. When Jesus ascended back into heaven after his resurrection, he left his disciples with a promise on the mountain. What would they be able to do in addition to picking up serpents, according to the gospel of Mark?

Answer: They would be able to heal the sick and be protected from poison.

Mark wrote in his gospel, that signs would follow those that believed Christ and preached the gospel in His name. They would be able to cast out demons and take up serpents. They would also be protected from anything poisonous and would be able to heal the sick. This came true for many of the believers and was recorded in the book of Acts. (Mark 16:18)
9. On one of his missionary journeys, Paul was bitten by a very poisonous serpent when he was helping gather firewood. Why did the people marvel afterwards?

Answer: Paul did not die after several hours, like a person normally would have.

Paul had just survived a shipwreck. He and several other men were shipwrecked on the isle of Malta. Paul went to help set up camp, by gathering firewood. When he put the wood on the fire, a snake came out and bit him. The natives thought Paul must have done something very evil because normally anyone who was bitten by the snake died instantly. Hours later, Paul was still alive.

They thought he was a god, but Paul used the opportunity to tell them about Jesus. One of their leaders was sick. Paul prayed for him and the man recovered. (Acts 28)
10. In Revelation, following a battle with heaven, what happened to the "old serpent" that the Bible calls the devil, and all the people whose names were not in the book of life?

Answer: They were thrown into the lake of fire.

When God was finished judging the earth for all the wickedness that had happened, the dead and the ones alive were called before a white throne and judged according to their deeds. The ones that had not loved God or kept his commandments were cast into the lake of fire. God also took the devil, the old serpent that had deceived mankind since Adam, and threw him also into the lake of fire. There all the people and the devil were burned alive for eternity.(Revelation 12:9, 20:14)
