Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the very first word of the book of Matthew in the King James Version?

Answer: The

Matthew 1:1 reads, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."

Matthew was a tax collector. The first chapter of Matthew deals with the lineage of Christ.
2. Who did Salmon beget?

Answer: Boaz

Matthew 1:4-5 say, "And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; and Salmon begat Boaz of Rachab ..."

Salmon's name means coat.
Boaz was a wealthy man whose name means "lively".
3. What did God say when Jesus was baptized, in the King James Version?

Answer: This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 3:17 says, "And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased..."

Jesus was baptized by His cousin John the Baptist.
4. What shall the meek inherit, according to the Gospel of Matthew?

Answer: the earth

In Matthew 5:5, Jesus says, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."

This section of Matthew is known as the "Beatitudes" as Jesus is telling them about blessings they will receive if they meet the criteria; for example, the meek shall inherit the earth.
5. What did Jesus say to His disciples in verse 8:26 (KJV)? Complete the verse: "Why are ye __________, o ye of little _______?"

Answer: fearful, faith

Matthew 8:26 says, "And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm."

Faith is a common theme throughout the Bible. At one point Jesus tells his disciples that if they had the faith of a mustard seed (which is a very small seed) they could move mountains. In chapter 14, when Peter is walking on the water, he loses faith and starts to sink, and Jesus asks him why he has so little faith.
6. What does Jesus say He will do to those who deny Him before man? (KJV)

Answer: deny them before His Father in Heaven

Matthew 10:33 recounts Jesus as saying, "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."

Of the twelve disciples, Peter is the one who denies Him just as Jesus had predicted. However, Peter goes on to be a great Christian, spreading the Gospel as Jesus instructed.
7. What command does Jesus give Peter in Matthew 14:29 (KJV)?

Answer: come

Matthew 14:29 says, "And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus."

The story goes on to say that Peter then doubts and starts to sink.
8. What does Jesus say is the greatest commandment?

Answer: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Matthew 22:37 says, "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." This was in response to the question of what was the greatest of the commandments.

Jesus then goes on to say that the second is "Love thy neighbor as thy self. If we look at the rest of the Bible, this makes sense, because if these two things are followed, the Ten Commandments will fall into place.
9. Who will be set on the right, according to Matthew 25: the sheep or the goats?

Answer: sheep

Matthew 25:33 says, "And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left."

The sheep represent the people that have done what the Lord asked by helping those who had less than them. The goats represent the people that would not help those less fortunate than them, thereby not obeying the Lord.
10. Who was released from the prison in Matthew 27? (KJV)

Answer: Barabbas

Matthew 27:21 "The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas."

Barabbas' name means "Son of the Father". He was in prison for murder, but the people felt it was better to set him free than to free Jesus who they believed to be guilty of blasphemy.
