Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the first phrases of the Koran to be revealed (not compiled)?

Answer: Iqra Bisme Rabbikal Lazi -- Read, in the Name of Thy Lord

The full paragraph is "Iqra Bisme Rabbikal lazi khalaq...." The translation is: "Read, in the name of Thy Lord, who created man from a clot of blood, who taught man to write, which he knew not, Read!" The phrase is often used to condemn present-day mullah bigotry and prove Islam's emphasis on knowledge and learning.
2. How many chapters of the Koran are there?

Answer: 114

The first one is "The Opening" and the last one is "The People." However, the Koran was not revealed in the same order that it was compiled in.
3. What is the longest chapter in the Koran?

Answer: "The Cow"

"The Cow" has about 286 verses. The name probably came from the golden calf that the Israelites began to worship in Moses' absence.
4. What is the chapter "The Elephant" about?

Answer: Abraha's attack on the Ka'aba

Mecca had become a flourishing city because of the annual pilgrimage it hosted (the tradition goes back long before Islam) and Abraha, king of Yemen, wanted people to come to his capital of San'aa instead. About a year before Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) was born, Abraha annexed Mecca in an attempt to destroy the Ka'aba with an army of elephants.

It is said that God sent thousands of birds with rocks and pebbles in their beaks. These swallows dropped the stones on the elephants, until none of them was left, as said in the end of the chapter: "Casting against them stones of baked clay, so He rendered them like straw eaten up." While it is a little unbelievable that birds could take out an entire army of elephants with rocks, there are ways it could have happened. Maybe the birds weren't carrying pebbles (the word used in the Koran is rather vague) and instead, they had pieces of pure ammonium nitrate, which, if heated a little and applied at the correct pressure, can cause a large explosion. The suffocating temperature of Mecca might have provided the amount of heat energy needed (but this is my theory only).
5. Which is the only chapter that doesn't start with "Bism Allah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim" - "In the Name of God, most Beneficent, most Merciful"?

Answer: "The Immunity"

The chapter condemns the non-believers, and their practice of going on the Hajj (pilgrimage) naked. It also forbade all non-Muslims to enter the area around the Ka'aba.
6. In which chapter can you find the line "Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?" about 34 times?

Answer: "The Beneficent"

This chapter names some of the endless bounties of God for mankind -after each bounty is named, the phrase, "Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?" is repeated.
7. Who was the only companion of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) to be named in the Koran?

Answer: Zaid

Zaid was the first enslaved person to accept Islam. Although he was Mohammed's (P.B.U.H.) servant, Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) treated him like a son. He was killed in the Battle of Mo'atta. The other three were also revered companions of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.).
8. The chapter called The Victory deals with what victory?

Answer: Treaty of Hudaybia

In 8 A.H., the treaty of Hudaybia was signed by Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) and the Meccans. The Muslims were very dishearted because the treaty appeared to be a great success for the Meccans. That was when this chapter was revealed to Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) and claimed an open victory for the Muslims. Later, the Muslims realized what the victory was. Trade grew and missionaries converted hundreds of people to Islam. Also, Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) had the chance to recruit and train hundreds of men for the Islamic army.
9. No one has been able to count the number of phrases in the Koran.

Answer: False

There are 6236 phrases in the Koran, according to the number of the Kufa school. Although people have been able to count the phrases, sometimes their counts disagree!
10. How many chapters in the Koran are named after animals?

Answer: six

"The Cow," "The Cattle," The Bee," "The Ant," "The Spider," and "The Elephant."
