Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What very old man in the Old Testament had a name that could have meant either "man of a dart" or "man of God"?

Answer: Methuselah

Methuselah or Methushael was the name of the longest-lived man mentioned in the Bible. He was a descendant of Seth and was the grandfather of Noah. Scriptures tell us that he was 969 years old when he died.
2. This man's name, when translated into English from the Hebrew, means "Dove". Who was this "reluctant" prophet, who was the only Biblical prophet sent to reach people outside of the nations of Israel or Judah?

Answer: Jonah

Jonah, whose name in Hebrew was "Yonah", or in English, "Dove", was the only prophet sent to a foreign nation to foretell doom to the inhabitants of Nineveh. The people repented of their sins, and God spared them, for a time, until they resumed their wicked ways, about 70 or so years later.
3. Obadiah was also a prophet who wrote a book of the Old Testament. What might his name best be translated as, in a combination of Hebrew and modern English?

Answer: Worshiper of Yahweh

Obadiah's name would roughly translate as either "Worshiper of Yahweh" or "Servant of God".

While there are 13 people mentioned as being named Obadiah in the Old Testament, it was perhaps one of them that was responsible for the book of Obadiah. It is a very short book of the Bible, consisting of a mere 21 verse chapter.

The major topic seems to be one of judgment passed on the nation of Edom, who were descendants of Esau, because of their arrogance and cruelty to the people of Judah.
4. The book of Ruth revolves around the story of a young woman and her mother-in-law, who, upon the deaths of their husbands, return to the mother-in-law's native land of Israel. How does the name Ruth best translate into the English language?

Answer: Friendship

Ruth's name might best translate as "Friendship" or "Association". Ruth was faithful to her mother-in-law, Naomi, even going so far as to adopt her native land and people as her own. Ruth was originally from the land of Moab, modern-day Jordan, yet refused to leave her mother-in-law's side after the death of their respective husbands. Eventually, Ruth remarried a relation of Naomi's husband, a man named Boaz.
5. Many people are aware that Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, but that another man actually was the one who finally led them into the Promised Land. Who was this man, whose name means "Salvation" when it is translated into English?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land, after the death of Moses. Joshua's name comes from the same root source as Hosea, (a prophet) and Jesus, the man that Christians regard as the Savior of the world.
6. The prophet Samuel's mother's name had a meaning similar to "favored one". What was his mother's name?

Answer: Hannah

The name Hannah, favored one, comes from a primitive word meaning to incline, to encamp or to dwell.

Elkanah, Samuel's father had two wives - Hannah and Peninnah.

Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not, until she prayed to God for offspring.
7. Beelzebub, with a variety of spellings, can perhaps best be interpreted as which of the following choices? (Hint: Author William Golding might be able to help you figure this one out.)

Answer: lord of the flies

Beelzebub or Beelzebul is often seen as a title of satan which stresses he is the prince over demons ("demonic flies").

William Golding wrote the novel "Lord of the Flies" based on his experience as a teacher of unruly boys. The story has many allegorical references to society as a whole, and specifically with those of a fictional group of youngsters left to fend for themselves.
8. Which Old Testament character had a name that could mean "harassed", "afflicted" or "questioned"? (Don't turn this into harder *work* than it should be!)

Answer: Job

Job's very name is indicative of the suffering that he endured; not for his own sake, but many people believe that it was most likely prove a point to the devil. They believe that God allowed Job to suffer so that ultimately the devil could see that Job did not intend to allow anything to interfere with his relationship with God.
9. Jude, who wrote one of the shortest books in the New Testament, had a name that had been borne for centuries among the Jewish people. Originally Judah, the diminutive version of this name, Jude, might best be translated into modern English as which of the possible answers given?

Answer: Praise or Thanks

The root word for Judah/Jude is yadah, a Hebrew word meaning thanks.

Some theologians believe that both the author of James and the author of Jude were two of Jesus' half-brothers; children of Mary and Joseph. Two other sons are mentioned in scripture along with daughters. The names of the other two sons were Simeon and Joses, (or Joseph, Jr. according to modern terminology).

Matthew 13:53-58 in the King James Version puts it this way:

"And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas.
And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things.
And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."
10. The apostles James and John were children of Zebedee and Salome. What would the name of their mother, Salome, best translate as, in modern English?

Answer: Peaceful

It might be easiest to see Salome's name in the Hebrew word "Salem" or "Shalom". Peace is how both would be translated, and Salome was quite likely a peaceful woman, as opposed to her boisterous husband. Jesus once referred to him as "thunder", when referencing their children, James and John, calling them "sons of thunder".
