Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the mother of Abraham's son, Ishmael?

Answer: Hagar

See Genesis chapter 16. She was an Egyptian, and was the handmaid of Abram's wife Sarai. Abraham was actually called Abram at the time of Ishmael's birth. Hagar was treated badly by Sarai before Ishmael was born, and fled into the desert to die, but was promised that he would become the father of "a multitude" (Gen. 5 - 11)
2. What nationality was Isaac's wife Rebekah?

Answer: Syrian

See Genesis 25.v. 20. She became the mother of twins, Esau and Jacob.
3. "The Book of Ruth" is the first book of the Bible named after a woman, but who was Ruth's mother?

Answer: She isn't named

See Ruth 1. v. 4. Naomi had two daughters-in-law, Ruth & Orpah. Ruth loved her and was very close to her, but was not her daughter.
4. What is the name of David's first wife?

Answer: Michal

See 1 Samuel 18. v. 27. She was King Saul's daughter. King Saul ordered David to bring a dowry of 100 Philistine foreskins, hoping that David would be killed by the Philistines (1 Sam. 28. v. 25). David was made of sterner stuff, and didn't have too much trouble obtaining this dowry. Perhaps if Saul had asked for a monetary dowry, David may have found it more difficult!
5. Who was Queen of the Medes and Persians before Esther?

Answer: Vashti

See Esther 1. v. 9. Vashti made King Ahasuerus angry by refusing his command to attend his feast. He then made a decree to bring young girls from all the provinces, to choose one to succeed Vashti as Queen, and Esther was chosen.
6. How many Books of the (Protestant Version) Bible are named after women?

Answer: 2

There are only 2 - Ruth and Esther. Catholic and Orthodox Bibles add the Book of Judith.
7. What was the name of the daughter of Jairus, whom Jesus raised from the dead?

Answer: She isn't named

See Mark 5. v.22 - 43. When raising her, Jesus said "Talitha cumi" (meaning Damsel arise), but he doesn't actually say her name, and Jairus only refers to her as "my daughter".
8. Who was the mother of John the Baptist?

Answer: Elizabeth

See Luke 1. v. 7 - 13. Although both Elizabeth and her husband Zacharius were very old, the Angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharius and told him God had heard his prayer, and promised him a son.
9. What was the profession of Lydia?

Answer: Seller of purple

See Acts 16. v. 14. She was a woman of Thyatira, who worshipped God and was baptised with her household. "Seller of purple" may identify her as a wealthy and respectable merchant, as purple was the colour of nobility back in those days, and "to deal in purple" was a sign of standing and respect.
10. After being imprisoned for his preaching, the Apostle Paul appeared before King Agrippa, but what is the name of Agrippa's wife?

Answer: Bernice

See Acts 25. v. 13. She isn't mentioned again, though King Agrippa takes up much of Acts, chapter 26, being expert in the customs and laws of the Jews, and "almost becoming a Christian"! (Acts 26. v. 28 - 29)
