Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It all begins with the brain. The frontal lobes are having a big row with the occipital lobes since they imagine that they should have the brain's visual processing system. What are the frontal lobes really responsible for?

Answer: problem solving, judgement and motor function

The brain is one of the body's most vital and complex organs. It has several specialized areas that function together. The occipital lobes are correct in their belief that they should operate the brain's visual processing system. The frontal lobes are clearly out of line as they should get on with their job of problem solving, judgement and motor function. Sensation, handwriting and body position are handled by the parietal lobes, and memory and hearing by the temporal lobes.

It is in the brain stem, lying between the spinal cord and the rest of the brain, that functions such as breathing and sleep are controlled.
2. Oh dear! Marty's lungs are in big trouble. They are refusing to contract and expand because the left lung is accusing the right lung of stealing one of his lobes. How many lobes does each lung have?

Answer: The right lung has three lobes and the left has two.

The lungs are sponge-like organs in the chest cavity. They carry oxygen to the capillaries so that the blood can be oxygenated. Each lung is divided into lobes. The right lung has three and, in order to accommodate the heart, the left lung has only two. Together, the lungs make up one of the largest organs in the body.
3. What! Marty's heart is so befuddled that it cannot remember which system it is a part of. Which system does the heart belong to?

Answer: the circulatory system

The heart is a part of the circulatory system. It circulates blood so that oxygen and nutrients can get to every part of the body. No one can live without a heart.
4. Which of Marty's organs, which should be busy filtering waste from his body, has forgotten this role and is idly collecting stones?

Answer: the kidney

Each kidney is about the size of a fist and is located at the back of the abdomen. Our blood passes through the kidneys several times throughout the day and the waste is removed. Not only do the kidneys remove waste from our bodies but they also control the fluid balance and the balance of electrolytes. The normal human has two kidneys, but can function with only one.
5. Marty's maxilla, although a bit tipsy, is insistent that the mandible should take the lower place as the lower jaw. Is it correct?

Answer: Yes

The mandible and the maxilla are among the primary bones of the face. Two maxilla bones fuse to form the the upper jaw and the palate. In the same way, two mandible bones are fused to form the lower jaw. The maxilla is fused at the intermaxillary suture and the mandible is fused at the mandibular symphysis.
6. Oh deary me! Marty's loop of Henle is twined around his colon. Where should the loop of Henle be located?

Answer: in the kidney

The loop of Henle is the long U-shaped part of the tubule that channels urine in each of the nephrons in the kidney. It recovers water and sodium chloride from the urine. The loop of Henle reduces the volume of water and solutes within the urine. However it does not change the concentration.
7. Marty's hamate bones are insisting that they belong in his ankles. Do hamate bones belong in the ankles?

Answer: No

There are two hamate bones in the human body. They are located in the wrists. These are wedge shaped and hook-like in appearance. These bones join the metacarpals of the little finger and the pinkie finger.
8. Marty is unable to keep upright. Which body part has forgotten that its function is to help Marty maintain his balance?

Answer: the ear

Hearing is not the only function of the ear. The ear helps us to maintain balance. The semicircular canals are three small loops above the cochlea. These tubes are filled with liquid and microscopic hairs. The liquid in these canals moves the tiny hairs when we move our head and a message is sent to the brain about the position of the head. Immediately the brain sends messages to the right muscles so that we do not keel over.
9. Marty's prostate gland is refusing to allow the urethra to let the urine leave Marty's body. It says its only function is to nourish and protect the sperm so the urethra is an intruder. Is that true?

Answer: No

The prostate gland is located between the bladder and the penis just in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut. The prostate is responsible for secreting the fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. However, the urethra passes through the centre of the prostate.

It runs from the bladder to the penis and allows urine to leave the body. When there is a problem with the prostate men experience difficulty in passing their urine.
10. Well! Marty realizes that something is seriously wrong in his body so he tries to call his wife to get the doctor. He opens his mouth but there is no sound. Which of his body organs is not at its right location?

Answer: the larynx

The larynx acts as a respiratory organ. It regulates airflow into the lungs and it prevents harmful material from entering the trachea. It is also known as the voice box because it plays a role in phonation. When the airstream passes through the larynx the vocal cords vibrate and voice is produced.

Other vocal organs such as the uvula, palate, tongue, etc. help in modifying the voice into meaningful linguistic sounds.
