Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disease causes meningoencephalitis?

Answer: West Nile

Meningoencephalitis is the inflammation of the spinal cord and the brain. West Nile Fever is the only disease that is proven to cause meningoencephalitis. However, no cases of MEI have been reported in tuberculosis and influenza. Pyrenidite is a made up word. =)
2. Which disease is transmitted by mosquitoes?

Answer: dengue fever

Dengue fever is one of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Others include yellow fever, and malaria. Damp fever is found in the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins.
3. In Yellowstone National Park, one of the most scenic views is the Norris Geyser Basin. The hot springs and basins contain microorganisms that cause a fatal bacterial form of meningitis and Legionnaire's disease.

Answer: True

Trust me, I went to Yellowstone. That's why they don't let you swim in the hot springs because they want to avoid another case of meningitis and Legionnaire's disease.
4. A deer tick can transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Answer: True

Deer ticks don't cause these diseases but they transmit them as well as many more. Luckily, I haven't been bitten by a tick yet.
5. What virus causes smallpox?

Answer: Variola

The Variola virus causes smallpox. However smallpox is no longer a big concern in the world, due to the WHO's efforts to eradicate it. The only known place where the Variola virus still exists is in one of the WHO's laboratories.
6. What disease is synonymous with leprosy?

Answer: Hansen's disease

Hansen's disease is basically leprosy renamed. Leprosy is no longer a problem in the US, but still is an epidemic in poorer parts of the world. Leprosy has been around since Biblical times.
7. You are a doctor in charge of a mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One patient of yours exhibits signs of Ebola. You examine his blood and find some parasites in his bloodstream. Does your patient have Ebola, and if no, what disease is he most likely to have?

Answer: No, malaria

Your patient does not have Ebola. The Ebola virus is shaped like thin strands. The patient most likely has malaria because of "the parasites in his bloodstream". AIDS is caused by a virus, not a parasite.
8. Which of the following is NOT a symptom of cholera?

Answer: appendicitis

Cholera causes all of these EXCEPT appendicitis. The appendix is just something left over from our ancestors. If it becomes inflamed, it must be taken out.
9. How did botulism get its name?

Answer: sausages

Amazingly, botulism got its name from sausages. At one point in history, a group of people in Germany ate raw sausage links (gross!) and 4 of them got food poisoning. Thus the name "botulism" stuck for the disease that causes food poisoning. The root "botulus" in Latin means sausage and the suffix "ismus" means action or state.

The suffix later went through English derivation and became "ism".
10. What type of virus causes cervical cancer?

Answer: Human Papillomavirus

The human papillomavirus is one cause of cervical cancer, which is only present in women (the disease, not the virus (which can also be prevalent in men.)) This amazing breakthrough showed that cancer can be caused by biological factors, environmental factors, genetics, AND viruses!
