Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sofia's uncle's shortness of breath is getting progressively worse even when he's resting. Oh dear! The test results prove that he has emphysema. What might have been the cause?

Answer: long term regular tobacco smoking

Emphysema is a medical condition in which the alveoli fill up with air causing them to become damaged. Scar tissue may also be formed. Soon the alveoli transform into large irregular pockets with holes in them. The size of the lung is gradually reduced preventing enough oxygen from entering the bloodstream. Exhaling air becomes a problem when the small elastic fibres that open the airways which lead to the alveoli are destroyed.

Regular long term tobacco smoking is the most common cause of this disease. Other causes are marijuana smoking or air pollution, such as factory fumes. This condition cannot be cured but treatment can lessen the symptoms and slow down the rate of progression. Complications of emphysema are pulmonary hypertension, collapsed lung, expansion and weakening of the heart and recurring infections.

In some severe cases, where all other options fail, a lung transplant may be recommended.
2. Elephantiasis is a parasitic infection that causes terrible swelling in the arms and legs. Where in the human body does the adult worm live?

Answer: lymphatic system

Elephantiasis is transmitted from one human to the other when the female mosquito feeds. The worm which causes the disease is called the filarial worm. After growing into an adult the worm lives in the lymphatic system. Another name for the disease is lymphatic filariasis. Elephantiasis causes the skin to thicken and the limbs become grossly enlarged and thickened.
3. Ted is suffering from ergophobia. He is in great danger of losing his job. What is Ted having an abnormal fear of?

Answer: work

Ergophobia is a social anxiety disorder. It is an abnormal and irrational fear of work which causes undue anxiety about the workplace environment. Sometimes the fear is actually a combination of other fears such as fear of socializing with other workers or failing at assigned tasks.

Ergophobia may occur as a result of schizophrenia, fear of rejection, a traumatic or negative incident, clinical depression or even medical drugs or sleep disorders.

Persons who suffer from ergophobia should get assistance from a mental health therapist.
4. Encephalitis is a rare disease of the liver which mostly affects alcoholics.

Answer: False

Encephalitis is a rare disease of the brain that affects mostly children, the elderly, or persons who have a weakened immune system. It is an inflammation of the brain which is caused by a virus.

In mild cases of encephalitis persons may experience headache, fever, poor appetite, a loss of energy and a general sick feeling. In severe cases there may be several symptoms that relate to the central nervous system along with high fever. Some of these symptoms are nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, confusion, disorientation, convulsions, personalty changes, memory loss, hallucinations or even coma.

The herpes simplex virus is one of the most common causes of encephalitis. Measles, mumps, chicken pox and other childhood illnesses can cause mild forms of encephalitis. Most sufferers of this illness recover fully but in some cases, where brain damage is severe, it can be fatal.
5. Sarah has very painful periods and persistent pain in the region of her pelvis and lower back. Which condition might she be suffering from?

Answer: endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition that affects the uterus in women. It occurs when the lining of the uterus grows in other areas such as behind the uterus or on the ovaries, bowels or bladder. When this occurs heavy periods, pain and infertility may result. Some women may not realize that they have this condition until they begin to have trouble getting pregnant.
Pain medicines and hormones can help persons with this condition but some severe cases require surgery. There are also some treatments that may help women with endometriosis to get pregnant.
6. Peter is a teenager who suffers from enuresis. What problem does he experience during the night?

Answer: an inability to control his urine

Enuresis is commonly known as bedwetting. It is experienced by approximately 2 out of every 100 teens. Enuresis may occur in the day (diurnal) as well as in the night (nocturnal). There are several causes of enuresis. These may include bladder or hormonal problems, genetics, sleep problems as well as medical or psychological problems.

Boys seem to be more susceptible to this condition than girls. The reason for this is not known. Teens who suffer from this condition should monitor what they eat and drink before going to sleep, use bed wetting alarms and imagine themselves dry. In some cases doctors may prescribe medication.
7. Which medical treatment would a person who suffers from enetophobia refuse to have administered to him?

Answer: injection

Enetophobia is commonly called needle phobia. This phobia is a deep seated and unreasonable fear of sharp objects such as needles, knives and pencils. As a result people who suffer from this condition are terribly afraid of medical procedures that call for the use of injections or hypodermic needles.

Hypnotherapy and direct conditioning are used to help control and improve this condition.
8. Is there any possibility of pregnancy occurring outside of the uterus?

Answer: Yes

In an ectopic pregnancy the fertilized ovum may remain in the fallopian tube instead of moving into the uterus. This is caled a tubal pregnancy. In some rarer cases it may attach itself to another abdominal organ or to an ovary or the cervix. Such pregnancies can be extremely dangerous and must be treated as emergencies. Ectopic pregnancies are usually caused when a fallopian tube is damaged and prevents the fertilized egg from entering the uterus so it implants itself somewhere else.

Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy may include lower abdominal pain, light bleeding, nausea and cramps and pain on one side of the body among other things. If these symptoms are being experienced the expectant mother should get to the emergency room immediately.
9. Epilepsy is a brain disorder. Which symptom recurs in epileptic patients?

Answer: seizures

In cases of epilepsy, persons experience recurring seizures, violent muscle spasms and, in some cases, a loss of consciousness. Some epileptic persons may experience strange sensations and emotions and their behaviour may appear unusual. Epilepsy may result from illness, injury to the brain or abnormal brain development. Sometimes the cause is not known.

While epilepsy can be controlled by medication there is no cure for it. Surgery or implanted devices may help in some cases.
10. My daughter has esotropia, so which part of her anatomy needs to be seen to right away?

Answer: eye

The common name for esotropia is crossed eyes. It is a condition in which there is an inward deviation of the eyes so that they appear crossed. Within the first six months of birth the condition may occur intermittently. However if it continues after this period parents should consult a pediatric ophthalmologist. Usually eye muscle surgery is required.

This condition affects the child's vision and cannot be outgrown so it must be treated as a matter of urgency.
